In news that'll no doubt come as a relief to many, it sounds like Capcom isn't going down the old (and increasingly tired) Soulslike route with the Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
During the latest Capcom showcase, director Satoru Nihei delivered some new info on the still in-development title, making some interesting comments on its brand of gameplay in the process.
"With sword-to-sword combat, we put particular emphasis on the satisfaction of slicing through enemies," says Nihei.
"We’re not trying to make an impossibly difficult game," he adds. "Instead, we want to make a game where fans of action can experience thrilling sword fights and taste satisfaction from slaying their enemies."

In other words, it looks like Way of the Sword is going to be your more standard action title, as opposed to a being a punishing action RPG — a genre trend that's obviously become increasingly popular in recent years.
Of course, Onimusha has always been an action series at its core — rounded out with puzzles and Resident Evil-esque exploration in places — but it's still nice to hear that this next instalment isn't chasing a vastly different vision. If anything, Capcom suggests that Way of the Sword will lean into the action side of things more than ever.
The game's still on course for a 2026 release, but are you dying to hear more? Wipe the blood from your blade in the comments section below.

I'm glad that Capcom didn't turn the combat into Soulslike. But i hope they keep the Issen mechanic because it's satisfying to pull it.
And they said the setting is Edo period (1600-1800) or known as Tokugawa period. So that means this game after Dawn of Dreams.
With this game and Onimusha 2 HD, it's just nice to see the series is alive :3
I cannot wait for this and the more they keep it like the originals, we'll, the better it will be.
I may be in a minority, but personally I'm a little disappointed - I don't really get a lot out of standard hacky slashy gameplay, and was hoping for more of a Serkiro-like experience; I just find it a lot more satisfying.
That said, I'm fine to be in the minority if everyone else is happier with this approach
@PapaGlitch You are not starving for choice. You got the Nioh games as well.
As long as it's not a "trial and error bang your head against the wall until you win" kind of game then I'm fine. If I remember correctly the original Onimusha games played closer to Devil May Cry anyway.
@Nem Nioh does not play like Sekiro
@PapaGlitch Onimusha isn't a "standard hacky slashy" game, not when the combat has Issen mechanic, sword classhing, and magic. Not to mention it has RE type exploration with death traps and puzzles. It's a pretty unique samurai action series with the combat standing the test of time.
So there's no need for Onimusha to copy Sekiro or any Soulslike gameplay.
@Nepp67 OK, but there are plenty of souls likes around to choose from.
@Nem I get that but he said Sekiro. Sekiro plays a lot differently compared to dark souls, bloodborne, and Nioh where it is clashing swords to break a stagger meter.
Was hoping if they did another onimusha they would borrow a bit from soulslikes, as I think capcom could do a decent job - I mean I always thought Demon Souls and later games borrowed some of what Onimusha did.
Onimusha 1-3 isn't easy but isn't a hard game either, the difficulty is just right, we don't need every game has souls like difficulty.
I wonder if capcom going to use japanese actor as the face of the main character, I like that the series usually has famous actor as protagonist like takeshi kaneshiro as samanosuke (onimusha 1,3) and jean reno as jacques (onimusha 3).
Yeah that is nice and happy news to me. Not a fan of ridiculous hard game. I play game for fun not for stress lol 😂
@breakneck im uninstalling youtube like maybe 3/4 years ago. Im just sick with all the typical view WHORE type of youtubers. And i seen most of them is so Desperate right now 🤣🤭
@breakneck yeah it’s tiring and so annoying. I know that feeling. YT now saturated with random people that desperately need fast money by doing a stupid things
You know you can have impossibly difficult game without it being a soulslike, right? Look at Ninja Gaiden, souls doesn't have a monopoly on difficulty in games.
@wiiware I don't think Capcom gonna used famous actors face for their games anymore.
Onimusha Dawn of Dreams for example doesn't have any actors or celebrity face. Yusaku Matsuda character, Jubei Yagyu, iirc only mention once by Akane. Even Samanosuke face looks different in that game and he wasn't voice by Takeshi Kaneshiro.
@Rich33 God no I love Souls games but there are too many of them nowadays not everything has to play like Souls I want Onimusha to be Onimusha not the 10,000th souls clone
@PuppetMaster That’s a shame, I actually like the actor likeness for this series.
@Keyblade-Dan
I just said borrow a bit, not clone them. (And im not part of the crowd totally against difficulty levels)
Anyway - I never have got the "too many souls likes" argument, particularly in AAA - the category feels a bit under used tbh.
Since the start of the generation I have only played Nioh 2 (which I think was just a light remaster), Demon Souls, Elden Ring, and Lies of P.
There are a lot of games labelled as Souls likes, usually by main stream media, but they are just 3rd person action games.
(BMW - no idea, never played as performance was not up to scratch)
