Gamescom 2021 hasn't even started yet and we are already prepping to hand out awards to games that aren't actually even attending a physical event. The gaming industry this year, huh? The main attraction will be Gamescom Opening Night Live on Wednesday, and alongside the event are a series of awards with nominees that make for some interesting reading. The PlayStation award is dominated entirely by publisher Bandai Namco, with its titles making up all three of the budding winners. Those are Elden Ring, Tales of Arise, and The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes. Not a single PS5, PS4 exclusive in sight.
Some are reading into these nominations, suggesting that Elden Ring will be making an appearance during Gamescom Opening Night Live, but we'd caution against pinning your hopes on the event. The European-focused showcase hasn't contained many very noteworthy reveals in the past few years, and we doubt that's changing. Still, a new Elden Ring trailer will always be welcomed. For information on when you can tune in for Gamescom Opening Night Live 2021, head on through the link.

So weird giving games praise for how good they are based on trailers. If we’d go by those standards (and let’s be honest, mainstream gamers do that and have been doing that since the N64/ps1/saturn days) cyberpunk, dead island and aliens colonial marines are some of the best games ever made.
None of them are out yet. Go away.
Ah, yes, my favorite game: Undisclosed Title.
Given these awards judging by past years end up being to do with games that are shown off at Gamescom, I think we can safely say that Nintendo and Sony won't have any 1st party presence at Gamescom Opening Night Live. Otherwise games like Horizon Forbidden West and Metroid Dread would be present in these nominations.
Nintendo always has an early September Direct and Sony has been Nintendo 2020 levels of silent for a lot of this year so not really surprising.
why not award these games with most anticipated or "game of show" awards instead of giving them awards that only games that have already been released should get.
I don't understand how Gamescom hasn't even started and games are already getting nominations for what was shown at Gamesccom.
Also... Just Dance is best Switch game? That's not comforting.
Not sure about "awards"... but a bunch of games there I have on my list.
Dark Pictures, FarCry6, Halo Infinite, Company of Heroes 3, Elden Ring, Tales of Arise, Syberia.
Syberia: The World Before - Prologue free Demo has me excited for it.
Remember when Cyberpunk 2077 won tons of awards before it even came out? Yeah that's why giving awards to games before they're even out is laughable even if i have no doubt Elden Ring will be excellent.
@RBMango That game is coming out on my birthday, which is TBA.
Well what a sensible idea to award games that aren’t released nor are they even finished. The person in charge over there most certainly deserves an award too. Brilliant idea
NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
😂😂😂😂😂
Lmao hahahaa
I think this award will walk away with the Best Award award
What is really the point of this? This is just some random BS award given to games that aren't out yet... why? because they can... even though they shouldn't because it doesn't make any sense to do so.
For god's sake Elden Ring isn't coming until next year (unless it is delay)
Looking at the others for Xbox and Nintendo is hardly exciting either, bland on the horizon.
This is the next logical step to the (now trendy) "delays" in the gaming industry, isn't it? So few AAA games launched lately that they're starting giving awards based on trailers, alpha stage gameplay videos and behind closed doors "hands-on" reports.
Stupid, half the games aren't even released, yeah sure Elden ring looks good as does tales of Arise...Cyberpunk looked good too...
@Shinnok789 games have been getting GOTY awards pre release since the late 90’s. Never wondered how a game could have a “winner of over 200 GOTY awards” stickers on there at launch?
This just tells me I can safely ignore this event in its entirety. Almost none of the stuff I'm excited for was even mentioned. Where's Horizon Forbidden West? Shin Megami Tensei V? Kena: Bridge of Spirits? Metroid Dread?
Nah, who needs that when "Just Dance" and "Undisclosed Title" are going to be shown off?
Ludicrous, I'm saving my award nominations for games that people are just thinking about making!
More like Elden Ming. Those graphics stink.
So glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this is kinda dumb.
Are these sponsored awards or something? Bizarre.
I remember Cyberpunk getting awards before it came out and everyone knows how that rubbish turned out.
I have high hopes for the new Tales game though and Elden Ring.
@Grumblevolcano Hey this is kinda random but I'm sure I used to see you on Nintendo Life. I used to be a regular user on there but I left in April and decided to start fresh here.
Hey it doesn’t mean Elden Ring won’t be shown.
My most anticipated game for sure. 🔥
Edit
I’m not bothered about awards. It’s the same BS as any award anyway. I don’t get why people are interested in those all year long haha
Geoff Keighley: Congratulations! Here's your award!
Game Developer: Um...what am I getting this for?
Geoff: Absolutely nothing!
I like Geoff but this is really silly. 🤣
Tales of arise does improve some things (skits), but it's just the same as the last 2 games with prettier graphics. It hardly deserves an award.
So now we're giving awards out to games nobody even saw at the show, based entirely on the commercial? People complain that gamers are too cynical and see conspiracies everywhere, but apparently gamers didn't take it far enough. The reality is that awards are literally assigned to everything on the "coming soon" list. In alphabetical order. It doesn't even pretend to not be fake advertising anymore.
The fact Horizon zero dawn 2 Forbidden west isn't on this list is a Insult
