The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was one of the first games announced for the PlayStation 5 – it was later confirmed for the PS4 as well – but it’s still a long way away from release. The game – which is being co-published by Nacon and Daedalic Entertainment – got its feeble fingers on a few minutes of alpha footage earlier today, ahead of a planned Fall 2022 launch window.
Clearly a lot of passion is being invested into the release in order to accurately recreate Tolkien’s world, and there’s promise in the mix of parkour and stealth gameplay. But the early footage looks rough, and it makes you wonder just why it was announced so early. Coronavirus will have significantly set the project back, of course, but it’s difficult to get too giddy over what’s being shown.

I know it’s early days but it really really looks like a PS2 game. The physics and general gameplay loop is very Sands of Time or Beyond Good and Evil.
Such a shame the new LotR MMO was canned. I’d love more games set in Middle Earth but Gollum isn’t really doing it for me 😔
Enough time for them to realize that Gollum as a protagonist isn't really that appealing. *wink *wink
First revealed in 2019 and won’t be released until 2022. I really, REALLY hate this practice. They should ban showing games that are more than a year from release.
This looks mediocre and this is me being pretty generous. It actually looks like garbage.
I'm glad to hear the devs cite the books for the environmental and character designs. Looking forward to playing this one.
@fR_eeBritney Or at least they should show more footage (looking at Hogwarts Legacy and Suicide Squad).
that thumbnails horrifying , theres kids on here y'know
@nomither6 It’s pretty low brow for Push Square to use a picture of full blown scrotum as the thumbnail.
They should just cancel it cut the losses. This game will fail and looks like a forgotten PS2 game that shouldn’t have been revived years later.
Play Gollum, get ring, run to farthest corner of map. Don’t pause game, leave console on, Gollum wins Lotr.
@nessisonett
Came here for the PS2 comments, was not disappointed.
Conceptually this is really neat. A single player action-adventure LOTR game. But it just doesn't look good. Wasted potential.
@fR_eeBritney who exactly should/could ban them?
No worries. Not greatly anticipated..
I'm actually looking forward to this. It looks like something new and different, and it looks legit the team are very passionate about the project despite what the internet thinks about it. Not every movie franchise needs to be turned into an open world rpg or mmo (or both). Here's hoping that this game turns out to be good, and at least somewhat financially successful.
Stealth and Parkour is dev language for you've already played this game but this is with a Gollum skin. It will not sell well unfortunately, this isn't the 2000s, can't just ride on the name alone unless you are going to bring a whole new game style to the table which this won't.
@naruball 🤣 they ... (plays X Files theme song).
I don’t know, I just think studios shouldn’t be allowed to show games that are years away from release. I know it can’t be helped sometimes when there are setbacks in development but 3 years is a ridiculously long time from reveal to release.
Still waiting patiently for an update on Lego Star Wars 🙄 TT games could have built an actual Death Star in the time it’s taken them to release that game.
Why bother wasting resources on a PS4 version for something two years into the next generation?
It's far too early to judge this game, but I don't have a lot of confidence in it at this point. This early footage doesn't do it any favours at all.
I wish them all the best but I wouldn't be surprised of it slips to 2023 among a few others that are planned for next year.
I don't think anyone has reacted positively to this game from its early footage. I wonder whether the team takes any of that to heart. Imagine putting all this money and time into a game, reading the reactions from this game footage and concluding "we've made a terrible mistake".
I think I saw one person care about this in the comments. This thing is gonna crash and burn so bad lmao
Haha that section with Gollum climbing like Nathan Drake had me in stitches
@Icey664 I am also looking forward to this, but definitely won't be a day one purchase.
This seems like a wait for it to be $20 game.
Yeah, it doesn't look amazing at the moment. That said I'm a big LOTR fan and Gollum has always fascinated me as a character, so I'll probably get this once it's out. Anyway I pre-ordered Bio Mutant and it can't be worse than that, right?
I'm a big fan of Tolkien's written work and I do believe that they could create and craft an interesting experience from this.
It naturally wont suit fans of the film who just want to go and have a fight of course, but middle earth is a big enough place that it has room for other styles of games too imo.
They should avoid showing any footage at this point, as it looks truly backwards, but with this game still having a long time to go it could develop in leaps and bounds graphically, once the systems and levels have been designed.
Too early to write this off, I remain hopeful this will become something I want to play!
@ScottyG eh I personally think it's for the better that amazon haven't been able to make it as their current game offerings don't seem to be going so well. Though that mmo port seems promising. I wish monolith would just make another lotr game already, I'm wondering what they're up to these days.
This shouldn't be releasing on PS4 in late 2022. Will last gen never end???
I think the biggest issue about this game is that it's following two great Middle-earth games, for which we apparently have no sequel for, and it seems we're getting this instead? It's already a tough act to follow, and I don't hate the concept, but certainly everything we've seen so far doesn't evoke much excitement.
