It's time for another update on The Last of Us' TV adaptation. HBO is working alongside PlayStation Productions to bring Naughty Dog's beloved game to the small screen, with shooting to begin this month. Production is just getting started, but news about the cast has been slowly trickling out.
The latest character to be cast in the show is Sarah Miller, Joel's daughter. Nico Parker will portray her in the adaptation, as reported by Deadline. Parker only has a couple of acting credits to her name, with her breakout role being the young girl, Milly Farrier, in 2019's Dumbo. She's also appeared in a miniseries called The Third Day, funnily enough playing a character named Ellie.
She joins a pretty great cast, with Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey portraying Ellie, and Merle Dandridge reprising her role as Marlene. As mentioned, shooting is just about to begin, so we're not likely to see the finished series for quite some time. Even if you've played the game plenty of times, the HBO series will apparently deviate in certain places, so it should be worth a watch for that fresh take on the story.

I really hope this is good as so looking forward to it! Fingers crossed we are not disappointed.
@BoldAndBrash why makes you say that? I mean, Pedro Pascal has South American heritage, is it really an out there concept that his daughter is a person of colour? This isn't me trying to bait you or anything, I'm genuinely curious why you think the casting is out there. Is it just Joel and his daughter or other cast members?
Hope she enjoys all five minutes of her screen time.
Isn’t sarah in tlou 1 white?
@wiiware does it matter? The character will die in 5 minutes ffs
Can't wait for this, hopefully they do the games justice. Think I might start the games again soon, and play them back to back. Especially since tlou2 got the ps5 upgrade.
The appearances of the game's cast have been so engrained in my brain, this is only going to feel like a cheap knock-off at best.
Curious who they're gonna get to play Sam & Henry? Maybe Caleb McLaughlin for Sam? (Lucas from Stranger Things), not sure who they could get to play Henry. Especially curious as to who they'll get to play David.
People complaining about the casting again? Reminds me of all those that bellyached about Tom Holland as Spider-Man, now those same whiners swear Tom's the definitive version of Spider-Man. So far the casting is good in MY opinion, I especially don't understand the Pedro Pascal as Joel hate, honestly I think he's a good choice, he just needs to bulk up a little, but other than that, I'm looking forward to the show.
@BoldAndBrash 100%
@Octane i think it would be more cheap looking if they got all look a-likes for the cast.
@jdabb I'm still not sold on Superman with a wig as a stand-in for Geralt either
Since the games are perfectly capable of telling the story in a satisfactory way, (to the point of bringing tears to the eyes of the players) I really don’t see the point of this adaptation (or any other videogame to movie or series) … oh… money… I forgot that…
@JB_Whiting
Remember flashbacks are a thing.
@BoldAndBrash it's great isn't it. So excited for this one. They have yet to drop the ball with casting so let's not jinx it!
I don't understand the point of making such adaptations. Videogames are a form of art and entertainment that has better potential in telling a long and complex story with good character development than any movie or series.
The interaction with the world, the control you have on the characters is what make these videogames incredible. Take that out, and you got a very simple and formulaic zombie story.
@AlienigenX You just took the words out of my mouth, but I still had to tell them!
I don't have a lot of faith in this simply because the story was perfectly told in the first game. If they don't change the plot it will most likely be an inferior version of the same story.

I was watching a movie the other night called ‘The Silencing’ with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister, GoT) and thought he would’ve made a great Joel.
@fR_eeBritney soon as you said that I was thinking that would have been great, think he would have made a great Joel. He has all the qualities for playing Joel.
@AlienigenX Because it's a great story that can be experienced by people who don't play video games?
Also, like you said, money.
@wiiware yeah. They're definitely doing it to spite old fans. That makes perfect sense financially. After all, companies are childish and don't care about profit.
Do you guys think they could change the opening? I mean, if they do it it would be a huge mistake imo, but is there a chance?
I really liked Pedro in GoT, but after some crazy Twitter "drama", I lost a bit of respect for him. However, he is superbly talented so I can't wait to see him in action here!

I forgot about the nonsense you found in these comment sections. I take it back, Push Square really isn’t any better than NLife in that sense.
I bet Sarah's death scene is nowhere near as emotional as the scene from the game.
I really hope this is good. The Last of Us is the best directed game I've ever played...so it translating well to screen shouldn't be as big a problem as most game to film/TV adaptations. The hard work (creating a compelling story out of something that's usually way down the list of priorities when creating a game) is done for them.
If it does turn out to be bad though I highly recommend people check out A quiet place and A quiet place 2...closest thing to a last of us movie.
Serious question though, A lot seem to praise Pascal... what's he been in that demonstrates well his acting ability? All I've seen with him in so far is wonderwoman where he was given a cheesy 90's throwback super villain character to work with...and the mandalorian, where he basically had a handful of lines under a mask. Neither demonstrate particularly good acting ability. Why is he a good fit for Joel?
@Bleachedsmiles He was great on GoT with an incredibly well written, likeable character and that's where everyone knows him from. Everything else he's in I can't say he's been anything special, though I haven't seen Narcos which is probably the role with his largest body of work.
@naruball It's true though.
@Bleachedsmiles Are you taking the ****? His best role imo is in Narcos. That alone gets him the Last of Us gig for me but I also enjoyed his performance in Game of Thrones.
@BoldAndBrash if Pedro was only picked for this role for political correctness then thank god for political correctness!
Also he was genius in we can be heroes
@mucc Yeah, I really like Narcos but I don’t think it was specifically because of Pascal’s acting - It’s just a really good show.
He was great in GoT though. Who can forget that shocking fight he had with the Mountain.
@GamingFan4Lyf This. My wife does not play video games (although she supports me and my sons who do!). I am excited to share the story of Joel and Ellie with her when it hits HBO. She has heard me raving about it for years-now we can share it!!
@JustPlainLoco They Could Get Donald Glover To Play Henry.
If you love the game you’ll watch the film, its not even a question.
Billions don’t play games, lets say 50% of those have heard good things about TLOU game, then they hear about this film. Guess who going to watch it, you alongside those newbies to the franchise.
Use your brain. The casting doesn’t matter cause its not for the “gamers” per say
@BoldAndBrash understood. And thanks for responding civilly. It's a topic that seems very difficult to reasonably engage in for some, and I'm glad we could have a decent discussion about it ✌
My excitment for this show is less and less with every new casting announcement. The only thing that is good so far is Merle Dandrige as Marlene.
I think people need to apply a different perspective. I understand most negative opinions are coming from gamers; ones who are particularly close to the IP.
But this is a TV show, one that is headed up by HBO with Craig Mazin as showrunner; the credentials attached to the crew are of high-quality. Maybe focus less on who's in front of the camera and more on who's behind it.
@wiiware totally, dude. They have so much to gain.
@Areus - Donald Glover a bit too big of an actor now to be doing TV shows, shame too because he would be perfect to play Henry.
@StonyKL Never seen Narcos. I did need reminding he was in game of thrones though... Glad to hear he does have some ability to act then.
@AhabSpampurse here we go again...
@Tulio517 Yes? I don't want to watch blade movie if the protagonist is white. Or can you imagine if black phanter protag is changed to white in black phanter 2?
@wiiware
"Yes? I don't want to watch blade movie if the protagonist is white. Or can you imagine if black phanter protag is changed to white in black phanter 2?"
Don't be so hysterical and ridiculous. Why on earth do you have a problem with Ellie being portrayed by a mixed-race actor and Joel by a Chilean actor? It's not about you petal (as you seem to make EVERY story about The Last Of Us Parts I & 2 all about you). Your (now deleted) comments on here have been downright offensive. - It's up to the CREATOR of the characters who he sees best fits the roles, not a nameless entity who's perpetually moaning on website comments, stamping his feet like a spoiled brat.
Seriously dude, this is getting so, so tiresome.
On another note, I can’t get over how fresh faced and young Joel looks in the top image. ND did a great job at aging him while keeping his core features intact
@Profondo I don’t have problem with joel actor, but it’s weird to have ellie race swapped like that. Like I said, I don’t think I want to watch blade movie if the protag (blade) is race swapped to white guys. It’s up to the game ip holders to make anything they want, and it’s up to the customers (the first game fans like me) to like it or not.
Jesus can they ***** up casting anymore
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I love gaming, but I despise gamers.
Casting directors base their decisions on performance, not race. Fanboys need to get over the fact that an adaptation is not a translation, it has new creative input, and if you want the story as it was then just play the damn game. It is clear that Pedro Pascal is a terrific actor who will be a great fit for Joel, and I can only assume they felt the same for this young actress.
Some of the comments just stink of the dreaded R-word, and it's incredibly unpleasant.
And @wiiware, the difference is that Black Panther and Blade are intrinsically linked to their race, so it would be ludricous to race swap them. They were stories largely written by white men who ramped up their race as their defining feature for largely commercial reasons
@PapaGlitch For me it's simple, if ellie in the original game is white, I want white actor, if ellie in original game is black, I want black actor. Although at this point I don't think I care about this ip anymore, so they can do whatever they want.
@wiiware for me it's simple - if an actor is good for the role, I want them to play them.
Where does it end? Is it ok for Ellie's hair to be a different shade of brown? What about the placement of her freckles? And if she's a millimetre the wrong height the whole thing is a travesty.
No, of course not. It's only ever the race that matters in these conversations
@PapaGlitch I want the actor to be the same as the characters in the game, be it race, hair, freckles, etc, because that mean the one making it is respecting the original work.
There's a lot of actor in hollywood, I don't believe there's no one that looks like sarah from the game and this one is the best they got.
@wiiware here you go pal, I think this is what you're after
https://youtu.be/XoeZJLHnbNk
@PapaGlitch I'm not clicking that, lol. Beside, it's not like I care about this ip now, sony/nd can cast whoever they like. Let's just agree to disagree and move on.
@Profondo So you wouldn't be bothered if Sam and Henry were white in this adaptation? Or does race only matter when they're black?
@Elisabeth
"So you wouldn't be bothered if Sam and Henry were white in this adaptation? Or does race only matter when they're black?"
So you registered especially to come out with your racist BS? Awaiting your incoming homophobia and transphobic pish. Now off you pop petal and give your head a wobble. - Oh, and before you accuse me of misogyny (oh the irony), you're as much Elisabeth as I am Susan.
I'm not a racist, homophobic or transphobic (In fact, Lev is one of my favourite characters) I just absolutely detest this double standard. If you're okay with Sarah suddenly being black, then you should be okay with Sam being white as well.
Thank you for reaffirming my opinion on people like you, though.
