The Caligula Effect 2 will be heading West this October, publisher NIS America has confirmed. A sequel the somewhat divisive The Caligula Effect, which first released for PlayStation Vita back in 2016 (and got an enhanced PS4 port named The Caligula Effect: Overdose in 2018), it promises more psychological drama and turn based battles.
Just to give you an idea of how weird The Caligula Effect gets, here's a quick overview from the press release: "A virtuadoll named Regret has created the world of Redo in order to save people from their past regrets by unknowingly imprisoning them in a simulation. However, this “paradise” is shaken to the core when a virtual idol named χ breaks into Regret’s virtual reality and restores a high school student’s memories of the real world. In order to escape Redo, they re-establish the Go-Home Club, a resistance group that seeks to fight against Regret and her enforcers, the Obbligato Musicians."
The Caligula Effect 2 is out for PS4 on the 19th October in North America, and the 22nd October in Europe. Are you interested? Try to retain your sanity in the comments section below.

This looks...um...different.
Did anyone play the first one?
What is the thing with Japanese games and words beginning with Re!?
Still waiting for the original to drop to a decent price. It’s on sale occasionally for £18 digitally, and is effectively £12 second hand, but still consider that a bit high. Maybe if I didn’t have so much else to play…still need to finish my second runs of Trails if Cold Steel 3, Tokyo Xanadu, and Persona 5, all of which are really similar games.
That's a bad trailer. Why would you put 'auto-battle' as a feature to sell your game? I've got no idea what the hook is meant to be
I have the first on Switch but have yet to play it.
@Svark Hi ! I played it, and it was not bad per see but not good ever. Gameplay was interesting at first, you had to choose the action of all your characters and you could see how it would go (will it be blocked, will it create a combo, could you more damage like this or like that ?) but it was LONG ! There was a lot of combat (not random, you could see the enemy, but sometimes space was so packed you could not avoid combat) and this style of combat was way too long for every battle.
Story was ok, characters were interesting but their individual story were not always really exploited. Dungeons were boring (huge corridors with different theme, nothing interesting) sidequests were awful (fetch quests, "take this enemy down" quest, nothing interesting or especially rewarding). This game was saved, in my opinion, by the somewhat intriguing story (nothing crazy but good enough) and characters.
The plot was EXACTLY the same as this one : virtual idol in a virtual world, where people want to escape reality, then the main character say "nah, let's return to the real world" even if they don't remember why they would escape their reality in the first place.
I'll wait and see for this one, I guess : if the combats are no better, then it will be a big no for me (I don't want to have to bump into an enemy every two meters, have the combat lasting some long minutes because of the system, then run like crazy in every dungeons just to avoid encounters haha)
@thefourfoldroot On the NISA "Europe" Store you can get Caligula 1 for 16.99£ New.
Doesn't sound too bad of a Price for a New Game when your in the UK. (Which i assume since you wrote prices in £)
@thefourfoldroot No, they are not. Those games you mentioned are good, Caligula is not. Clunky gameplay, underdeveloped cliche story. I am surprised they are trying this hard with a sequel. It honestly looks as bad as the original. You can see from the trailer the stiff animations and the limited locales with portraits rather than animated scenes.
Keep to those games you have. You will have a better time.
@Nem
In terms of structure and genre, even look, it seems to be. But, as I said, I haven’t played it so can’t comment on how well it does the same things. Thinking about it, I still have to play Blue Reflection which I bought years ago. Thanks for the warning on Caligula though.
@Lightgazer
For such an old game…it’s an ok price I guess. I rarely pay more than £10 for any game though. I’m so far behind the releases I don’t need to. By the time I get around to this I’m sure it’ll be cheaper. I’ve learnt my lesson from buying loads of games in sales but not playing them for years, only for them to be sold for much less by that time. Sure we’ve all been there.
@thefourfoldroot
Since it IS on the NISA Store it might get cheaper yes, but i've learned that before you pay more you should always grab it.
The only thing it can get is more expensive after some years, so if you don't like it you could just sell it off.
Still looking for The Witch & The Hundred Knight 2 for example, i could never get it for a decent price, unlike the first game, and it's getting hard finding it too.
RPGS / JRPGS tend to never get below 20 (best i ever saw them was 15~ for the "not so good ones" ofc NOT counting Tales of - games they tend to go 5-10 often)
PS: Care to tell which ones you got for around 10£?
@Lightgazer
When I say £10 I mean total, after sale or trade back. I don’t really keep games any more (just sold off all my ps1/2 and GameCube games for £336, haven’t collected since then).
For example, I got judgment for £15, then traded it for £11, got Shenmue 3 for £8 an trading it back for £6, Yakuza Like a Dragon is £18 and get back £13; Witch and the Hundred Knight 2 is expensive at £32, but then you get back £20 for it (or probably more if you wait), so not much more than £10. Catherine for £20, got back £12.
These are the types of prices I work at. When you can get games 10 x less than digital, or maybe 5 x less should there be a digital sale, I just don’t see the point in doing otherwise unless you’re committed to owning them forever
@thefourfoldroot
Ah i see, im the exact opposite then, but i do always wait until there is a good price for the Games i want (except if there is smth special about it like a Preorder Bonus thats actually worth it or a Collectors i like)
Im sure your old Collection of Ps1/2 GC games had quite some gems then since it sold for so much. (or was it many games?)
@Lightgazer
Quite a few, but some went for 50, Skies of Arcadia I got about 75. Some on ps1 were 20 or so. I’ve still got a load worth 5-7 but I couldn’t be bothered to take them in yet. Others for 10p or so I just gave to a charity shop.
I have some games I’ll keep for my collection. All the original FF and GT and MGS etc, but Having 30 + years of gaming experience behind me I know now I’ll never replay my games and they just take up room.
