Perhaps unsurprisingly, May's most downloaded PlayStation 5 and PS4 game is Resident Evil Village, the acclaimed sequel in the long-running horror series. The game's a winner with critics, but it seems to be a big hit with gamers as well — the PS5 version is sitting pretty at number one in both regions, while the PS4 edition claims number one and number two in Europe and the US respectively.
Back on the PS5 chart, Housemarque's Returnal is really holding its own; the slick shooter claims second place in North America and third in Europe. While we don't have sales numbers, it looks as though the game is doing well for itself on the digital storefront. Meanwhile on the PS4 chart, Rust Console Edition is also among the bestsellers, setting up camp at number one in the US and third in Europe.
As for PSVR, it's the same old story: Beat Saber is numero uno in both regions, and the usual suspects vie for position beneath it. On the free-to-play chart, Call of Duty: Warzone is top, with Fortnite, Rocket League, and Genshin Impact close behind.

Looks to be a dope game however zero chance I’ll be paying launch price even from the cheapest retailer for a game that’s under 30 hours to complete it (inc. side missions and some sightseeing etc if applicable to the game). That’s at a minimum of 30 hours too, it’d wanna be special if I know it’s 30 hours. But a game that’s around 12 hours to complete like this one….I’ll wait a year or two and pick it up for mid $30’s
@ElMarko Never understand this logic. Village is perfectly paced and is the length it should be, if they gave it a RE6 type length it would be bloated and no where near as good. Anyway first playthrough is around 10-12 hours depending on how much you get done, its built for replays with extra incentives for doing so and you can get quite a few hours from Mercenaries, you easily stretch it out to 30 hours if you wanted too. I suppose i'm just a quality over quantity guy.
All done with resi 8 for now so will be trading that in for Ratchet on friday. All part of the master plan.
@ElMarko Depends what your definition of complete is. I’ve beaten it 3 times and still don’t feel anywhere close to ‘completion’ These games are built for repetition and NG+ imo.
Loved RE Village, I've played through it 3 times already, and plan on playing through it for a 4th and 5th playthrough in the near future, the only real criticism I have is regarding the sheer lack of horror. There's only like 2 scary moments in the game; the infamous Doll House moment (You know the one), and the 'Look out the Window' photo. Apparently Capcom intentionally removed much of the fear factor because a few people complained that RE7 was 'too scary'... that's just sad, Resident Evil is SUPPOSED to be scary!
@WallyWest the logic is value for money but most importantly a grand and detailed story. Two recent examples of this would be TLOU 2 and Ghost of Tsushima. Two game of the year candidates and winners. You just can’t get the same story and overall game in less than 30. Resident evil is a good game, but it’s not great
@Stragen8 different strokes for different folks. My definition of completed is as I mentioned, solo campaign, side missions and some exploration and at least a few collectables (if applicable). I don’t replay games either (barring a few exceptions. A very few), I move forward onto new ones
@Stragen8 really want to make a joke about beating it to completion (three times no less) but not sure i will get away with it on here 😂
I'll take a short amazing experience over a bloated open world game every time. I have well over a hundred hours played on both versions of Resident Evil 2 and that's mainly because the game has incredible pacing which makes replaying them endlessly so much fun. On the flipside I have 100+ hours in The Witcher 3 and I'll never replay that game because it's just too long and I'd rather spend the time I have on something else.
@ElMarko TLOU2 story is so valuable to me that I got it second hand for 15$! Yeah! Game length =/= quality.
Most long games today are blown up to the point of being boring. (this includes TLOU2)
RE8 has a nice balance unlike RE3 Remake.
With all those lycans amidst a backdrop of gypsy scrub I thought it was an ugly game for the most part. RE does a brand of ludicrous only Silent Hill could counteract, but alas that’s long gone….
I love seeing Returnal still in the top 3. A superb game through and through.
It obviously performs very well, especially considering it is only available on a strongly restricted obtainable hardware.
Big respect to RE Village too. Love seeing great games do good numbers.
Next up Ratchet and Clank and Rivet, of course.
I love RE village be cool to see resident evil win game of the year. I thought RE 2 remake should have. I got every platinum trophy for all RE
Returnal is incredible in my top list ever somewhere completed it twice over as Im grinding for the plat now. The second playthrough was one of the most satisfying feats Ive done in gaming. Completing it all bosses all areas in one run, no deaths is just insanely gratifying, after suffering on Derelict Citadel for hours the first time round. Making Nemesis look like a joke = my fave gaming moment this year!
