Square Enix announced Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster during its livestream earlier this week, but fans are baffled by the publisher’s platform decisions. The trailer – which has a near-50 per cent dislike ratio on YouTube – shows how classic RPGs Final Fantasy through Final Fantasy VI are getting a re-release – but on PC and smartphones only.
Many had expected this to deploy on consoles as well. “This is like finding a lotto ticket and realising it expired yesterday,” one poster wrote. “The best part about this trailer is the punch to the gut at the very end,” another added, referring to the platform logos at its conclusion. Given the robust feedback, we’re confident a port to PlayStation 5 and PS4 will happen eventually – but this announcement was, shall we say, misjudged.

"There's always Stranger of Paradise"
Ok now you really are just trolling.😉
Lot's of confusion on the Switch side as well. I mean come on SSBU got both Cloud and Sephiroth, not even PSASBR can claim that.
This is because they’re replacing the mobile graphics and 3D versions. I’d assume that they’re being built on the same code base as the existing PC and mobile versions. It’s disappointing but just some context.
I would love this, Ps4 has over 100 million users. Strange decision. Guess it doesn't have enough CHAOS!
So are they even doing anything with this remaster beyond bundling 6 classic games? As far as I know, these games are already available on mobile...
"Misjudged" is how I'd describe Square Enix's entire E3 show, aside from Guardians of the Galaxy (which looks solid enough).
Maybe the games industry needs to get over its inane fear of the mobile market. OK, so its not on PlayStation but chances are you have a phone that will play them all just fine and you can play them on your lunch break.
@Amusei This is going to be the next meme. It's already happening in our work chat today.
"Went for lunch. Came back and it was CHAOS!!!"
I was surprised as well when they announced it.
They're probably updating the existing mobile and PC versions of these games, especially considering they also just updated the listing of FF3 and 4 on mobile to say "3D Remake" to distinguish it from these upcoming remasters which are closer to the original NES titles
It really sucks that they're not getting the console treatment like VII-XII did but it is what it is
@TheFrenchiestFry 3’s the most interesting one to me. Every other game has had pixel remakes on PSP or GBA.
I'd love Nier Reincarnation on console.
Given Jim Ryan's comments on being keen on remakes of older gen games vs backwards compatibility difficulties,its a missed opportunity!
If I recall correctly ps vita/ps3 had access to all FF1-FF9 even if they were the ps1 versions.
Would be nice if they teamed up with Konami for a Suikoden compilation like they did Castlevania SOTN...🤔
that piece of information is utter "CHAOS!"
Baffled? No I'm outright PISSED!!! 🤬🤬🤬
If by baffled you mean furious yeah
@nessisonett The 3 Remake which originally was on DS actually did come to PSP in like 2010 or 2011 but to my knowledge this is the first time they're specifically bringing over the original NES non-3D version of III to the West at all
@ShogunRok This is my issue. Square are not new to the industry. They know how E3 works by now. They surely know that players are unlikely to be impressed with mobile phone and steam reveals.
Neo: the world ends with you literally deploys in a matter of weeks. What better opportunity to showcase that game and drive interest and potentially sales (unless it is planned for the switch showcase later) in a game that is flying under the radar.
Instead, lets announce the latest Brave Exvius cross-over. It's bonkers. I know Square, like all developers will have faced a difficult year due to Covid, but they didnt even mention the Tomb Raider Anniversary - not to mention other ip left on the table such as soul reaver, dragon quest, deus ex etc.
I dont want to moan. I said yesterday that i liked the look of GotG, and i am excited for Life is Strange remastered and TC . I'll even give them the benefit of the doubt with FF Origins, despite the 'chaotic' reveal, but it just felt like there was too much left on the table this time around.
I imagine Project Triangle will be at the Switch show, and FF16 or 7R2 would have been shown if Sony had already put out a show - but deals are in place to stop them being shown until that happens
@Snake_V5 No mobile trash
@orson Nier is not a trash franchise.
@Rob_230 1000% agree with all of this.
This collection would have helped saved SE's presentation. This and the Legend of Mana were their best reveals.
@Snake_V5 THIS. On mobile it just females like a horrible cash grab.
@Shepherd_Tallon I know bro 😹 I love Final Fantasy but on god, what were they thinking?? That looked so bad.
Surely you mean Switch and PS4/5.
Those are all NES/SNES games to begin with.
Btw yeah, absolutely moronic move, but I guess they'll port them over someday.
I've always wanted to try out some classic FF like V or VI, I've always heard great things.
Baffeled? no. Pissed, yes. Whoever made this decision, made the wrong one. Seriously dumb. These games are ALREADY on mobile anyway
Ignore this stuff on my Switch. If I turn on my PS5/PC this is not what I am going to play (Play the same 40+ hr game over and over, not for me)... so not something I'll miss.
No hardware licensing fee on PC, so I guess they just doing a code dump there. And just about everyone has a Phone.
@Amusei Hopefully they just picked the worst parts to show us...
I tried the demo last night but it wouldn't work. Will try again now when my shift ends.
CHAOS is messing up everything.
As I own VII & IX on the Switch, that would be my preferred platform to play this on. Hopefully we can see this come to consoles too!
@Snake_V5 Reincarnation is a mobile game. And mobile games are trash.
@Shepherd_Tallon Yeah, not exactly a great introduction. As a big fan of both FF and Souls games, I hope they can pull off something special here.
What, really?! I 100% sure it's on ps4/5, I though there's no way the game won't be available on consoles.
Also, do mobile gamer still buy games on their phone? I think most of them play ftp games or subscribe to apple arcade.
@RadioHedgeFund Not everyone who has a phone wants to play them on a small device. There is no reason it can't be on PS5/PS4. I suspect it will eventually, but if not, big hit and miss.
@InsertUsername I reckon if people would play them on the Vita the a phone is equally valid but it would be nice to play them on a large screen. I guess there is always the iPad.
mobile quality projects should stay on mobile. i have a feeling these releases are not worth worrying about and will be ugly, barebone ports.
@ShogunRok I don't think it was just Square to be honest. I felt like everything presented at the show this year (except Xbox showcase) has been filler and the best is being saved for an other event or even their own.
Disappointed with the Square showcase really this time round but I have a feeling they will either do their own with more games in the pipeline or the next Sony event.
Consoles would be nice....but is anyone pretending they can't play these easily on their phone or virtually any PC
@nessisonett Are consoles not PC now? So what the difference they even have easier and less different setups.
@Agramonte I really started at 8 and bought 7 after that so i would love to play the older games.
@RadioHedgeFund Perhaps, but there are many that would prefer to traditional TV route instead. That is how I play my games. Even the classics. Despite what we may think, there is certainly no reason they can't be on other platforms other than PC and mobile.
@Flaming_Kaiser PC (and mobile) games are built on different code. These ports are using existing code. Which doesn’t exist on PS4.
I own all of them but only my vita can play every one digitally off my 64gb card, FF1,2,3 are on psp, 4,5,6,7,8,9 + tactics are ps one classics plus X+X-2 remaster on vita. Would be nice to get these for posterity for ps4/5 as the great store closure is definitely happening soon. PC folks have emulators so I doubt they give two hoots about this announcement
@Agramonte steam charges 30% commission.
I might be in the minority here but I really don't understand why anyone would want this on PS4/PS5 in the first place
"Available on PC and smartphones" only tells half the story here - "would easily run on your grandma's laptop" is more accurate . Maybe my family just has too much tech (in rough "descending power order"- PS5, desktop PC, Switch, 2x work laptops, 3x personal laptops, not to mention smartphones) but I'd never consider putting these games on any of the more powerful machines listed here if they were available on all platforms - maybe the switch. But most likely I'd just stick them on one of the personal laptops - mainly so I'm not stopping anyone using the PS5 because I want to spend some time playing a game that can be played on a potato.
And that's if I was likely to buy these games at all, which I'm not. I do love FF but I have a backlog to tend to
All I see are people begging for Switch ports (what else is new). Personally, I've been waiting for them to release I-VI on PS3, PS4, and I guess now PS5. This is classic Square-Enix though. Instead of releasing on everything, which should be very easy for a company as big as Square-Enix, they screw around with limited and/or staggered releases.
If this had a live audience I guarantee this would be a "Do you not have phones!?" 2.0 situation.
This whole FF mobile mess is Part 2 of: Do you guys not have phones?!?!
Sometimes I hate this industry, I want Diablo Immortal on consoles too.
@nessisonett Dont they use the X86 or whatever its called? But whatever drop all the parts on a Bluray and tinker with the code to make it happen and ask €60 i dont see the big fuss.
@Netbean
Vita, such an underrated and underappreciated system.
Even more baffling as Sony probably still has a fair stake in SquareEnix. They bailed Square out after FF: Spirits Within movie left them reeling and short of cash.
EDIT: THEY SOLD THEM. It seems Sony did have a 18.6% stake in Square, then a 8.2% stake in Square Enix. They sold them in 2014 for around $156 million, a healthy $47 million profit.
Now I know why all the SquareEnix games are going to Game Pass /s
This is very sad news, I was excited about getting to play them on my PS5.
@ShogunRok I pre-ordered this game.
@Keyblade-Dan same.
Final Fantasy 1 on Nintendo was my first love in this world. These original games taught me my moral code in life. I've purchased every version I can. I so bad have been talking about this for many years. How since the original PS3, Sony has failed in in it's BC. I own the digital versions of Final Fantasy Origins and Anthologies. Plus the physicals. I can no longer play them given Ive replaced old gen systems with PS5. Hearing about this during the conference was Orgasmic. Only to have my balls smashed at the end seeing PC, Android and IOS. Not CONSOLES! WTF? I HAVE PERSONALLY BROUGHT MANY PEOPLE IN TODAYS WORLD TO FINAL FANTASY. FROM THE ORIGINALS TO 14 AND BEYOND. It's so upsetting to know they keep ***** us console players.
Such garbage decision like always.
@orson There are plenty of fun mobile games. Grow up, edgelord.
@Arnna No there are not. Grow up, psycho.
@orson “ermagerd, everything I dislike is trash”
@Arnna More or less, yeah.
