This is a great little clip dug by Reddit from an old GameSpot live show, in which Insomniac Games boss Ted Price and PlayStation veteran Mark Cerny promote the original Ratchet & Clank, prior to its release on PlayStation 2 in 2002. Obviously the series was brand new at the time of this airing, so Price spends a little time introducing the characters and discussing the influences behind the release, such as shooters and role-playing games.
Cerny also takes a moment to talk about the hardware, hyping up the performance that the developer has been able to extract from the PS2, compared to some of its contemporaries at the time. Given that the clip is now an alarming 20 years old, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is right around the corner, it’s a really fascinating little video that not only underlines how far we’ve come – but it’s also a testament to the longevity of the characters the studio created.

Man, Sony I just want Ratchet and Clank legacy titles like this on PS4 and PS5 you would profit so much from that why aren't you answering my CALLS!?
Damn Mark Cerny looks young.
Man insomniac is one of the best playstation studio, even before being bought by sony. One of my first game on psone is disruptor, another insomniac games which is still fun to play today 😃
@Total_Weirdo Yeah, ratchet & clank rift apart is one of the games that I don't mind paying $70 for, I have no problem with the game price.
@HotGoomba Would they profit though? I’m assuming the reason Sony have stopped releasing PS2 games on PS4 is because nobody bought them. I could be wrong.
There's something very 'Philip Schofield' about Mark Cerny.
That game looked amazing when it was released.
It was one the reasons I got a PS2 in early 2003. Well that and I really wanted to play MGS2 and I gave up on a GameCube port by that point.
@hypnotoad As in ‘locked in the broom cupboard’ or as in ‘is a massive Tory’?
He cops a lot of Knack memes/jokes sadly these days, but it's very easy to forget even back in the early PS1/PS2 era Mark Cerny was already a veteran designer. Though shorter term I still wish some better b/c solutions could be added to allow for some ps1/ps2 etc. classics onto new gen,I also hope he's given the opportunity to be involved in game design again someday on PS5.
I remember playing the demo disc about 50 times and rushing out to buy the full game on release day.
It’s been one of my favourite franchises ever since.
Can’t wait to play Rift Apart.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
@nessisonett I'm a massive Tory who's come out of the cupboard.
@nessisonett Added to that, who cares about politics on a game site ?
I don't and neither should you.
I love watching those old clips.2002 was a amazing year also for me.look how young everyone looks.ratchet and clank a legendary franchise was born.word up son
Those clothes! That hair! Why did we ever leave that time period?
Wow, did Ratchet seriously look that jank?
It left an amazing legacy, but the first game hasn't aged too well. Especially compared to Jak and Sly.
I find it weird how they're comparing it to an RPG. For R&C 1, that seriously makes no sense. Now, if they were talking about Going Commando and beyond, it definitely would since they actually have leveling systems for both weapons and your nanotech.
And to think I was there when it all began, DualShock in hand playing away.
The video's holding image is so pixelated it makes Mark Cerny look like Charlie Sheen. I'm not sure who's done best out of that.
@Bentleyma- well people are most likely to replay PS3 games than PS2, and some of the most popular PS2 games wasn't on PS4.
Cerny was totally right - it feels great to level up by using your weapons. I don't know why more games don't copy it - though the Elder Scrolls is a notable exception.
Ratchet and Clank is the one game I played more than any other game during the PS2 era. I still hold this version of the game in very high regard today.
@HotGoomba @Bentleyma- I think the reason no-one bought the PS2 games on the PS4 was they were mostly cack that no-one played on the PS2 in the first place. Pretty much all the big hitters seem to be missing, presumably because of licensing issues in most cases, but not for the now-Sony owned studios?
@RubyCarbuncle Same here! I was addicted to the series after randomly picking up the first game when it was on sale for $20 at Toys R Us.
I made sure to rent the sequels and eventually when I had my own money, I started buying my own copies.
