Resident Evil Village has been out for just over a week now, and as always, we want to hear your opinion. Capcom continues its first-person streak with its latest horror release, once again sticking players in the bloodied shoes of faceless protagonist Ethan Winters. This time around, Ethan's got to contend with all kinds of creatures — from werewolves to witches and almost everything in between.
We gave the game a glorious 9/10 in our full Resident Evil Village PS5 review, stating that it was Capcom's best horror title since the beloved Resident Evil 4, which released a whole 16 years ago. How time flies!
But how highly do you rate Resident Evil Village? Give it a score of your own in our poll, and then feed us an honest opinion in the comments section below.

Short. Not good. Can’t even aim down the sights either. 7/10 good but not stunning or super impressive
Great game. Enjoyed it more than 7 actually. Some of the puzzles were hit and miss, otherwise it was another great entry in the franchise!
Great game! Some of the areas could have had a bit more depth to them and i wouldn't say it's a scary game, but overall it is pure quality.
Roughly around 20 hours done and completed all story trophies. Just Mercs left.
For me this is the 2021 GotY!
Gave it an 8. Loved it. I've beaten it four times now and I plan on going back for more. A creepy, cozy, and joyously campy celebration of different kinds of horror blended into one extremely well designed game. Pretty much a checklist of everything I want in a Resident Evil game. Easily the best in the series for me since RE4.
Extra kudos to Capcom for releasing something so personally appealing on my birthday.
Spent 12 hours on my first run - Normal Difficulty
6 hours on second run - Normal Difficulty
2 hours 46 min on my 3rd run - Village of Shadows difficulty (using Unlimited Wolfsbane Magnum Ammo)
Gave the game an 8.
1% voted abysmal must have been get owned on the first ambush🤭🤣🤣🤣
I went with 8 my only problem is it was too short, and some important info tieing up stories could be easy missed, and one or two sections could have been longer
I’m about 13 hours into my first playthrough. I’ve heard some people complain about the aiming but I haven’t had any problems, I think it’s quite good. Don’t forget to turn off Movement Camera Acceleration & Aiming Camera Acceleration though!
I got owned a few times at that opening ambush and I rage quit. Not knowing what to do frustrates me. I tried it again the next day and easily got through it, I even had fun with that scene!
Easy 9 for me. Loved every second of it.
I don't know why some people want RE to be 20-30 hour games. Village was about the right length for a game like that, maybe one or two sections could've been slightly longer I guess. But these are games about replayability imo.
Contender for GOTY for sure.
The first half until you beat Beneviento is awesome, the second half not so much, but still good. Couldn't understand why they went with 1st person perspective though, in parts it felt less like Resident Evil and more like Call of Duty with monsters.
Overall I still give it a 9 when I sum all the parts.
My ranking now goes:
1. Resident Evil 2
2. Resident Evil 3
3. Resident Evil Village
4. Resident Evil 7
5. Resident Evil 4 (pending remake)
6. Resident Evil Remake
7. Resident Evil 5 (pending remake)
8. Resident Evil 0
999. Resident Evil 6 (pending complete reboot)
Straight 10 it's now my favourite Resident Evil game replacing VII and I've already played it 4 and half times and watched a full stream of it I absolutely LOVE it. Love the atmosphere, the gameplay is great, amazing balance of horror and action, best series villains to date and I love Ethan so much in this game I'm absolutely stoked for RE 9 after this gem
Easy 9. Best game so far in 2021 and of the generation so far. Knocked Returnal out of that top spot for me. Second best RE game, right behind RE7, which, to me, is one of the absolute masterpieces of the previous generation. I could sing praises about the gameplay, level design, character design, etc. On a technical basis, the game is flawless. The length is perfect. The atmosphere was haunting, even if it wasn’t necessarily scary to play. Loved the haptic feedback as well. It added necessary tension to difficult segments. The only drawback for me is that the ending was underwhelming, despite the volley of RE references in the final moments of the game. Truthfully, the game would be a 10 for me if I liked the ending more. But truthfully, such a wonderful experience and I certainly hope most PS5 gamers get to experience Ethan’s story.
Really great entry in the series. Hoping they release more side content like 7 had.
It gets an 8 from me.
I understand why some people didn't enjoy it much as the game is unexpectedly action-packed. But I put entertainment above everything else and this game is pure entertainment. They put a bit of everything, the result is an excellent mixture. It gets a 9 from me!
Going through it as I love the Res series, but first person makes me very ill. Will keep going very, very slowly.
Extremely disappointing.
It’s too easy (even in hardcore) and the horror side is almost absent.
And the dialogues are at the level of a bad anime of the 80s.
The end saves a bit the rest of the game but it looks more like COD zombie mode than a RE.
That’s the worst RE. 6 or 6.5/10
I gave it a 9 in the poll. Maybe more like a 8.5 really. The story needed some love and this game easy 9 or 10. Gameplay was excellent. Graphics are very very good. 3D audio was awesome for this game.
Great game but I did feel the first half was much more enjoyable than the second.
Am so close to the platinum on Returnal and then RE arriving this week for a nice break and change of pace! Very much looking forward to it.
How has the game been in terms of bugs etc? Does it feel quite polished?
Playing through at the minute. The aiming is a bit naff and the feel of the pistol is terrible but its one hell of a good looking game.
@Ward_ting On PS5, the worst I've experienced are small framerate hitches when the ray-tracing is on, very noticeable draw distance rendering regardless of RTX on or off, and very strange pixel warping when I look at the sky (though that might be an issue with my TV). No problematic bugs and no crashes. Not the single most polished RE Engine game I've played (that honor goes to RE7), but it still works exceptionally well the vast majority of the time.
@RBMango thanks! That’s good to know! Doesn’t sound bad at all!
@RenanKJ Is good to know that I wasn't the only that felt dead inside from playing 6 😂
I'm almost done with all the trophies in Village and I personally think is top 5 in all time RE games, I can't bring myself to ranking each game in order of greatest.
I have my copy coming in 2 days
Really good. At Heisenberg boss on my 2nd playthrough. Having avoided all trailers/spoilers I assumed Lady D would be the main boss and I kinda think she shouldve been and wasn't too keen on her transformation for the boss fight. The Castle should have been much bigger. Its the best part of the game. Most Resi's do this to me ... I always love the first stage/location then the next stages aren't quite as good. Ploughed through castle in no time on 2nd run. Also on my 2nd run I didn't upgrade anything until Heis's Factory when I got the best handgun and shotgun and sold all the starting weapons.... didn't have any trouble with any enemy on normal difficulty. Still, thoroughly enjoyable game ... just wish it had PSVR compatibility... Imagine looking up at an 8ft Lady Dimetrescu in VR. 9/10
Good game, but not really RE scary.
7 out of 10 for me. 3rd person shooting mechanic in 1st person game???
@Ward_ting i finished last night and experienced zero bugs. Game is polished to the n'th degree. Capcom nailed it from a technical perspective
8/10 for me. It would have been a 9, but - and without spoilers - the 4th lord boss fight was a little too cringe/cheesy even for resident evil.
Length is perfect. Resi doesn't need to be any longer, and whilst i would have liked the swamp area to be longer, RE games don't need to be 20 plus hour games just to pad out content. RE6 fell into the trap of thinking bigger is better- and failed for it - so i think too much more would have spoiled the experience.
Too many games are padded out with unecessary content, so i am more than happy with what we got.
I'm not a Resident Evil fan but I'd give this game a 9 for the character designs alone.
Don't read too much into that.
@Rob_230 Im happy to hear it's not too long. A short(not too short) horror game is a necessary evil to make a good horror game.
Probably an 8, length is perfect, gameplay is very good and I enjoyed the story, oh and having Duke and the upgrade system is a great move. As for weaknesses I'd say the castle doesn't really fulfill its potential and one of the other areas was pretty weak plus Mother Miranda needed some more screen time.
In relation to the other recent games I'd put RE2 Remake top then RE7 just above this as that was much scarier
Great game overall, enjoyed myself thoroughly. Bit on the short side perhaps. Clocked in on almost exactly 10 hours. Gave it 7/10, given I am not your biggest RE fan.
I think it's an 8, and the best in the series since Resi 4. It shares that games total madness, but I just feel the gameplay is less refined. Ethan's movement is clunky, and I'm cool with the in-game reason for that and the way they play with that in the final sections, but I wish for mobility and reactivity and just to be able to get a shot off when a werewolf is up in my face.
RE7 was scary, atmospheric, had a great story but it wasn't quite Resi enough for me. Village is a step in the right direction and I loved it.
I give the game a 9. I liked it more than Resident Evil 7 even though it wasn't as scary. So far my Game of the Year hands down. I probably put about 40 hours into it. Still working on unlocking a few more unlimited ammo upgrades. I still need to try Mercenaries. I'll probably give it a break and go back to it later. Can't wait until RE4 Remake.
I loved it. It might be my favorite, except for the nostalgia that 5 has for me because it got me into the series (besides failing miserably as a kid at 3)
Perfect length, never stayed in one place too long. Nice side stuff and backtracking. Perfect imo. Also nailed the story and I loved all the villains
@RenanKJ "999. Resident Evil 6 ( pending complete reboot) " . Haha, I love that.
Great visual and audio design. They nailed the overall aesthetics. And the production value is excellent. But the gameplay is shallow. The puzzles have never felt easier. And horror and survival elements are nonexistent. This one of most "RE for the masses" they've made yet.
I finished the game 3 times, unlocked most stuff! In the first run it took me like 11h to finish because I tried to get everything but really it's a very short game and quite disappointing when it comes to bosses, horror, enemies verity, and monster overall are only present in certain places that makes the game quite empty when you have like 1 of the 4 areas that function like a dungeons in Zelda game has no monsters and was tried to be scary but in the end didn't fit RE and felt detached from the rest of the game!! Fighting monsters was quite enjoyable but only Mauro and the guys with hammers felt like a boss from RE the rest were pretty meh!
I haven't gotten around to playing it yet as I'm heavily invested in Mass Effect. I was going to play it this weekend but I just couldn't bring myself to stop playing Mass Effect, the Citadel just looks gorgeous in 4K.
I will play this..........eventually. Mass Effect is just too good to walk away from.
@NB-DanTE I agree, I didn’t like how rushed it was. It felt like watching a 1 hour cut of the Justice League movie.
I would have liked to get to know more about the world and it’s inhabitants but the game just zooms ahead, crossing them off your to-do list before you’ve even had a chance to learn their names.
It’s great to play in the moment but... I don’t know... there was something dream-like about it. It never felt like a real person trying to survive a perilous situation.
I gave a 1, and also voted that I haven't played it. 😈
@Milktastrophe Reported for being a badass.
The clunky controls and old school shooting mechanics let the game down massively. They need to update their engine to be a proper rpg shooter like the division, remnant of the ashes & etc and it would be a strong 9 for me because they nail all the other parts of the game.
I know you guys don't use decimal point scores but I'd stick it at a healthy 7.5 (I've just recently nabbed the platinum for playtime reference). It fails to craxk my top five RE titles afraid to say; I found it to be a frustratingly inconsistent, but fun ride all round.
I’m about 4 hours in (on PS5) and honestly am a little disappointed in some of the graphics. Specifically the branches you walk through that can get close to the screen. I expected them to crack and bend and not be all boxy/pixelated up close. It doesn’t feel next gen enough for me. I probably sound like a huge dousche for making that comment but I expected this game to be truly next gen, not just a graphics and fps bump in the world of resident evil.
Everywhere else the graphics are honestly great but some of the little things are a bit of a let down. I also almost rage quit a few times in the beginning. Like another said, it totally takes me out of those quick moments when you have to keep replaying and figuring out where to run and what to do. Over and over if you keep dying. :/
I’d give it an 8 so far.
@ChromaticDracula, when a title comes out also to previous platforms can never expect to be pure next gen.. Expect the same for Horizon 2
I haven't played it yet, because I'm impressed with it's graphics and want to wait to see it on PS5.
That said, since when have you had to actually play a game to spew some mindless babble about it on PushSquare? Therefore, I give it a 7. It's too short. Not enough tall lady. Over all, I would rank it somewhere between 1 and 8 in the overall cannon.
I'm going to be a rebel and say 8.5. It's a great game, but the castle and the village feel a little disjointed. I can't help but believe the game at one point was going to be one or the other. It's fun and worth the money, to me, so that's really all that matters.
Heading to the 4th Lord, put about 9 - 10 hours in, and I’ve really enjoyed it so far. Ran into some frame-rate issues in the swamp (Moreau) region, but just turned ray tracing off for that section and it was fine. Overall a solid Resident Evil experience, and a good mash-up of RE4-style and RE7-style. I will say though, nothing has really scared me like 7 did. That game truly brought me to the edge with the horror, and Village just hasn’t come close. 8/10
@Fatewalker no, you’re right… I know that was a poor expectation in my part but still!
Very much a great game though just was surprised to see that. The Demon’s Souls remake set a pretty high bar for me so I guess I’m a bit spoiled already.
I thought it had some good moments. The graphics are really good but the story towards the end felt flat to me, I felt like the last part of the game really killed the vibe for me.
7/10
Also dont get me started how short the game was, that was a disappointment.
I haven't even gotten the game yet, waiting for a $20ish sale like I do with all the Resident Evils.
Absolutely loved it was disappointed with the samurai edge from the trauma pack though as it's only slightly more powerful than the stock lemi & not upgradable
I give it a high 7. The gameplay is good and turned out better than RE7. The director purposely patterned the game after RE4 which is cool. But why not include the melee from 4? Chris is weak in this game and it’s a shame because he’s supposed to be a recon now. Since Capcom heavily used 4 for the structure of Village Chris should have had his own Separate Ways/Assignment Ada mission with upgradable weapons. And shouldn’t be a playable character in the campaign at all especially in such a weak way.
The game being short and beatable under 3 hours isn’t a surprise considering that’s the norm for the series. Village is quite arcade ish with an amusement park vibes to it. The dlc is very much useless. And the best gun in the game worth upgrading is the STAKE. There’s whole lot of texture popping which shows the age of last gen hardcore in this port.
The game is fun overall. The story is silly. But it’s too easy..
Not done but an 8 so far. Had a couple weird bugs where enemies would clip into a wall after falling down and then they would warp to not be clipping and I'd take a hit.
@ChromaticDracula "Specifically the branches you walk through that can get close to the screen. 'I expected them to crack and bend' and not be all boxy/pixelated up close."
Now that's just bein nitpicky. I know RE8 isn't gonna be all that next gen but you could try to point out something bigger than moving branches.
@Nepp67 I know I know… it’s a crappy thing to point out. I will say I thought being able to see your own breath in your flashlight at night was awesome. I thought that was a really nice touch that pulled me in. Then I got close to a branch and I was like “oh yeah, this is a video game.”
It kinda took me out of that otherwise amazing atmosphere.
It’s a crappy thing to point out I know but one that would’ve went a long way to really drive home that scary atmosphere in the opening moments. I’d still give it an 8 at this point though! Definitely a great game so far.
I honestly don't get people saying it isn't scary. Sure, the majority isn't scary, but THAT section is honestly the most terrifying thing I have experienced since PT.
I will say that the tone of the game is completely mental - it goes through about 3 different genres in it's 10 hour runtime. However, I loved it, maybe more so for the insanity, and gave it a 9. Tied for Demon's Souls for my favourite next-gen experience so far
I’d go 8. Wasn’t scary at all, fun to play. Not as good as re 7 biohazard. Just my opinion.
Being one trophy away from the plat now, and played every aspect of it, and every other RE GAME this is defo a solid 95/100
Absolutely fantastic game, I was very worried when I heard it would feature werewolves before and spells, but they managed to write it in in a typical Resi way. Here's to RE9 - Biohazard Rose
Gave it an 8,I found it very short and it usually takes me ages to finish a game, however I did miss loads of areas due to a certain character telling me which way to go ,there's also no usual video game 'this is the point of no return warning '
Haven't played enough of it yet but what I have played I like a lot.
@ChromaticDracula @Nepp67 Indeed the foliage seems to be the weakest point of this RE engine I would say, but overall almost every room you go is pretty full of detail and looks very nice, specially in the castle. I wouldn't point out much the graphics on this game. For me the weakest point is clearly the voice acting and the characters, it's just terrible and too much action oriented, specially the "CoD" scene with Chris at the end it's just too much.. Also story wise was a bit of a let down. I would give it a 6.5 / 7 at max. As a fan of RE, still had a good time playing it, enjoyed the weapons and gunplay and it has some good moments. (I played it on PC with RT on and max settings with the frames capped at 120 on my RTX 3080 to save power )
The "more action oriented" was to be expected already since Village is inspired on RE4, which by the way, I find it the most overrated game of the series, I can't understand why.. Actually, it was on RE4 when the series started take a different direction and become crap followed by Re5 & 6.
My tops of the list would be the true real classic REs: 1-3 + Code Veronika, (RE0 could be also, but got tedious with no storage box and dropping items on the floor). Next on the list would come RE7 and Village and only RE4 would come after. Rest of the titles are not even worth mentioning.
On PS5 I believe we only have two big only PS5 games so far, Demon Souls (my favorite I guess - even motivated me to get the platinum) and recently Returnal (very good but tedious going for platinum - too much luck dependent for those survey trophies, no patience for that). Horizon Forbidden West hopefully will be very good and it's the one I'm really looking forward next, but not to expect to be at the same level of Demon Souls or Returnal since is going to be released also on last gen consoles..
@RBMango Loved it and gave it an 8. Damn. Tough crowd.
@GamesVanDerBeek Haha I can't blame you for that comment. If there was an 8.5 option, I would have gone with that. I save my 9's and definitely my 10's for games that have a really powerful and deep impact on me. They mean more to me that way. On average, I give out those scores maybe once a year.
Definitely not my favorite RE game, that crown goes to RE2 Remake (OG 2 was my fave before), but it is certainly the most fun RE game I've played in some time. I'm just hoping further installments remain in the realm of horror. 7 accomplished that return, but 8, as fun as it is, just turns into Michael Bay film near the end.
@RenanKJ is that re2make or OG (Both are excellent 😁)
Gave it a 9 was a lot better than I was expecting the marketing was pretty misleading and turned me off re8 but it popped up on curry's PC world 4 £49.99 so figured, ***** it why not?. Its missing a bit of horror/tension but improved the combat and gave EW some personality oh and mercs was free and not a shoe horned mtx filled mp game 🤣🤣🤣
@Sh3p3000 Remake. The PS1 version is fun too, but it has been replaced IMO hehe. Even Capcom named the new games as Resident Evil 2/3 without any remake subtitle.
@ElMarko stop popping pills
