We reviewed Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game almost two years ago, and only now is it getting a release outside of Japan. The excellent video game adaptation of 18 different events will be hitting PlayStation 4 on 22nd June 2021, a month before the real-life sporting event gets underway. Obviously, the Coronavirus pandemic played a ginormous part in why the game is only just making its way west.
The experience includes races of varying lengths, Long Jump, Baseball, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, BMX, Boxing, Judo, Rugby Sevens, Football, swimming events, Table Tennis, Tennis, and other athletic events. You'll be able to create your own athlete and even head online with up to eight other players. President and chief operating officer for SEGA of America Ian Curran said: "The Olympic Games are a unifying symbol of sportsmanship and competition for athletes and fans throughout the world. Tokyo 2020 channels that positive spirit into a fun, arcade-style experience for friends and family to play together as we all look forward to the start of the Olympic Games this Summer."
As previously stated, we've already taken a look at this one. An 8/10 rating was awarded in the Push Square review thanks to an entertaining roster of events, its art style, and intuitive gameplay. "A varied selection of events, each with their own addictive gameplay mechanics, makes for an entertaining package with plenty to see and do. Pair this with a vibrant artstyle and some decent online options, and youโve got the gold standard in athletics right here."
Will you use Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game as a warm-up before the real thing arrives a month later? Get training in the comments below.

That running animation looks so bloody rigid! Other than that, this looks like a fun little olympic minigame collection that isn't from the italian plllsbury dough boy and the blue porcupine.
I love this game, it's a lot of fun. Can't wait to revisit it!
I really enjoyed the Japanese version, simple platinum too ๐๐ป
October 2019 ๐๐ค
Always liked a decent 'olympics' game. Could be fun with the kids - shame there's not 4 player local, only 2 player local and 4 online. I remember the good old days of PS1 and Konami International Track & Field, competing with mates after college, ahhh - fond memories!
Iโm legitimately excited for this. Loved the ones back in the day just as much as the Mario & Sonic games. Hype!
Its probably as close to the real thing as the athletes are gonna get thanks to the Rona
18? That seems a bit underwhelming
Glad itโs finally coming out here. It took a bit of willpower not to pick it up on the Japanese store when it went on sale. I have little to no interest in sports games, but thereโs something about these arcad-ey olympic collections that really hook me. I still have fond memories of London 2012 on PS3.
Donโt have a switch so I never got to play the Mario & sonic Olympics game. But if the rugby mini game is half as fun as it looked in that game then i will definitely be looking forward to this.
This should be a PS Plus game. Perfect candidate in my eyes.
@mikeym Me and my friend spent many hours with socks on our hands sliding across the buttons for Track and Field on PS1. Simpler times.
Off topic: don't we all love to see United lose? ๐๐๐
@Enigk - never knew about that (and other tricks I've now seen from googling!). I just remember us all trialling different ways to hold the controller to get the optimum finger speed!
Sounds fun, is there couch co-op?
Love a good Track and Field game, right back from Daley Thompsons Decathlon on Spectrum! Not sure why they've included things like football, baseball, basketball, tennis and rugby though? That hardly screams Olympics to me. And those modes aren't exactly going to better FIFA, NBA2K, The Show etc so I can't believe they would be a huge draw for many people.
It's even worse when you look at the list and the likes of javelin, triple jump, archery, gymnastics, diving and weightlifting aren't included.
