It's impossible to ignore at this point: the UK is absolutely loving Nintendo exclusives right now. The company's games always do well of course, but the latest chart (which only includes physical sales data, we should add) shows that six of the top 10 best-sellers can only be bought on Switch. That's a pretty impressive result. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales continues its solid sales performance, though it's down from first place to third.
Grand Theft Auto V moves up a couple of positions to fifth, putting it just ahead of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The only other PlayStation game in the top 10 is Minecraft: Dungeons, but the PS4 version accounts for only nine per cent of sales.
Looking at the wider list, there are obviously lots of third and first party PS5 and PS4 games selling just fine, but the House of Mario has a commanding lead in the UK right now. Looking at what's to come, we're sure Sony will bounce back later in the year with releases like Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Horizon Forbidden West. Third parties will also keep things fresh; Outriders, Resident Evil Village, Deathloop, and lots more should keep things interesting.
Anyway, here's the latest top 10 in full.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 20th March 2021
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
- Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- Hades
- Minecraft (Switch)
- Super Mario 3D All-Stars
- Minecraft: Dungeons

Sony clearly messed up. They gave Nintendo enough time to build a huge audience. As soon as a product becomes popular, then it will keep selling because of the snowball effect. Everyone is buying a switch because everyone else has one.
It's one of the main reasons ps4 did so well compared to xb1. Who said that the battle is won by the one who reaches 10m unites sold first? (or sth along those lines). They were right to a large degree.
For being 'Over-glorified DLC' as so many claimed it was, it's certainly selling extremely well.
Picked up Mario 3d World last week and Bowsers Fury is great fun, Spider-Man seems to be the reason to own a PS5 for the time being and I had fun with it (great story). Animal Crossing is just ridiculous sales wise and it's good to see games like Hades selling well
I will never understand the appeal of Animal Crossing but my kids absolutely love it. The only praise I can give it is its great as incentive for the kids to do their homework and tidy after themselves if they want to be able to play it. Family games of monopoly never has the same appeal!
@naruball you really can’t compare PS5 and Switch in the same way as PS5 and Xbox.
aaaaand of course GTAV is still up there
Three games with Mario in the title. Yeah, Nintendo absolutely killing it with the sheer variety on offer.
🙄
Relax, PS5 has only been out for a few months and so far in 2021 there have been no major releases. I'm sure the Top Ten will become a lot more interesting and varied as the year progresses.
@naruball
Its more like the switch is the only system you can find in stores at the moment. You cant find any Ps4/Xbox 1 let alone any Ps5/ Series X|S yet most stores have atleast 5 Nintendo switches from what i can tell from my local wallyword, target and Best Buy.
@Col_McCafferty
Where are the great sony exclusives like Uncharted, The Last Of Us Part 2, Horzion Zero Dawn, God Of War or The so called greatest exclusive GoT. Oh right they dont have the leg to stand on like Spidey or Mario or even Animal Crossing. And we all know Xbox has no exclusives :snicker:
@TrueAssassin86x yup. That makes sense. But I bet wiiu would still not sell well, if it was available back in the day and ps/xb consoles were out of stock.
@kyleforrester87 you're missing the point. Of course they are not exactly the same, but as soon as anything becomes popular, it doesn't even have to be good to keep selling. E.g. apple products, Galaxy phones, etc.
People buy what others have and talk about.
@TrueAssassin86x The reason why those exclusives you listed aren't here is because the majority are 2+ years old. You're talking about Spidey when Spider-Man 2018 isn't here, does that mean it doesn't have "legs" like you say? No it means that it is an old game, only games like Mario Kart, Minecraft or GTA V survive 4+ years on from release.
Miles Morales is a recent release and is the biggest PS5 launch game, that is why it is selling still, and if you follow the sales, the numbers of sales for Miles Morales heavily follows the same numbers of new PS5 sales in the country, for example Miles is 60% down compared to last week due to PS5 sales in the UK decreasing.
All those games you listed were great and sold like hotcakes during their release periods, your " having legs" argument makes no sense mate.
@Playstation Sony most certainly did. They could have released the ps5 earlier to undercut the switch. Now it's become too big and it's dominating the charts. This hurts Sony even if they have their best year. It has lost a ton of momentum and let it;scompetitor take advantage of it.
@DonJorginho
"having legs = popular enough that people still buy them like Call of Duty, GTA or even Mario. Ya the games i list where popular at launch even at then they fell out of the top 10 quickly
@TrueAssassin86x That's what I mean, unless you're a global franchise like Minecraft, GTA or COD or a literal gaming icon like Mario your games won't sell long term.
Miles is selling really well and I'm glad as it is a great game! I just don't get the point bringing in the other exclusives as we know why they fall out the top ten quickly. Most people who want them buy them at launch and that is the majority of sales you'll get.
@naruball Firstly, I never, ever miss points. Just doesn’t happen. Second, for a lot of people the Switch is a complimentary system - they’ll have both, Switch and PS5 or Switch and Xbox. PS5 sales will pick up after 12 months. Although I agree the available stock has not allowed them to get out of the gate fast enough. But with backwards compatibility it’s not as big of a deal this time round.
Anyway, if PS5 does poorly long term it will be because of what MS does with Xbox, not the Switch.
@Darten maybe but most of those games you mentioned aren't in the top ten and haven't been for a very long time.
And two Minecraft games in the top ten and people moan about GTA V still selling.
😉
I was offered a Switch for free once, turned it down. Apart from BotW I wouldn't have played anything on it. It's alright for kids and those that have given up on gaming but other than that it's a pretty poor console and a damning indictment on the rest of the gaming industry that it's sold so well.
😝
@Col_McCafferty You haven‘t played games like Astral Chain, have you?
I would had thought this Spiderman would have killed it if it was promoted more that it's also available on PS4 or explained better how the PS4 upgrade works on PS5.
Seeing as a quick Google search shows that 80% of game sales are digital these charts are about as useful as a chocolate fireguard.
Is there a chart which also includes digital sales? As I think some of this top ten would not be in there.
@Col_McCafferty
I guess games like Astral Chain, Hades, Monster Hunter Rise, Bayonatta or ports yes i know "ports" of Doom, The Witcher, control, Crash 4, and immorals fenx Rising are all kids games then ?
@naruball What are you talking about? Comparing a Handheld with completely other gamebase than PS5 or Xbox Series X is just stupid sorry man. Is Switch NextGen? Oh okay then...
@Max_the_German Astral Chain looks good, if that came to PS I reckon I'd give it a go.
Some people are missed the point about Nintendo. Sure some third party games are adult titles but the system sellers and shifters are all kid friendly games with the exception being BotW and even that has an art style which would appeal to kids.
Not. A. Fan.
@JustPlainLoco There's literally nothing else to buy though, that's part of the issue, PS5 just has no games. So pretty much everyone that eventually manages to nab a PS5 is buying a copy
@ORO_ERICIUS Calling something some else said "stupid" sure is a fantastic staring point for a conversation.
It's almost like a system aimed at a younger generation is selling gangbusters at a time when you can't take kids out and do all the things they would normally do and parents need a break. Would love to see how uk software sales and fornite/warzone downloads correspond to lockdown stages.
@naruball
No hardcore gamer is buying a Switch over a Playstation or Xbox.
Switch sales have rocketed during the pandemic due to lots of schools kids being stuck at home, and the Switch Lite is a great console to keep them busy.
It's a completely different audience.
@Col_McCafferty The switch is a poor console and is for those who have given up on gaming ?? Really ? Mario platformers and Mario Kart IS gaming ! And definitely not just for kids, they're hardcore. Nintendo IS gaming ! Try Xenoblade 2 and BOTW and Hades and tell me they're just for kids. And to say because the Switch is selling well it's a damning indictment of the industry is just ridiculous. It's a huge benefit to the industry. I'm betting if any of the above games I've just mentioned were Sony exclusives you'd be all over them. People have been saying it for years - " never write Nintendo off"
@naruball Sony & Microsoft are in no way affected by Switch sales, as someone has pointed out earlier the biggest reason being Nintendo’s console is a complimentary system, oftentimes being the most recent console a household has purchased given the fact they probably already own an Xbox or PlayStation from last gen. Comparing a $200/300 system sales to $400/500 hardware is recipe for skewed results! Software sales are most important topic here, the fact that Switch games are topping the charts has a lot to do with brand recognition and loyalty (see Mario & Animal crossing for examples) plus more systems being available in stores as others have pointed out. Not to mention the BIGGEST fact being children make up the majority of gamers around the world these days...no surprise Nintendo is popular
@Playstation what? Who said anything about 2017?
@2cents Not really. People can make all sorts of assumptions about others based on themselves, but it doesn't change the fact that not everyone thinks or acts the same. I know plenty of people who bought a switch over an xb1/ps4 and they've been gaming on it exclusively, even though they hadn't owned a Nintendo home console since the wii and the Nes before that.
I know others who own a ps4 and got a complementary switch and haven't been buying as many ps4 games, because all their friends are gaming on switch.
So, it does affect software and hardware sales. To what extent? Hard, if not impossible, to tell.
@2cents why weren't those same games popular on WiiU? Because WiiU never took off. Its games were not worse than those on the switch, hence some WiiU ports selling ridiculously well.
Kids (and adults) play what the masses are playing, whether it is Mario, Fortnite, Minecraft or... Call of Duty.
@R1spam people keep bringing up the pandemic as if the switch hasn't been selling well since the day it came out and even beat ps4's record as fastest selling system in many occasions.
It started well and continued to do well. Sony had a chance to slow it down, but they blew it. Now that it's massive, it will continue to rule the charts for a long time, especially with software sales.
@Col_McCafferty Ironically, it's the core audience that is love with Switch. Your narrow-minded projections onto Switch are 100% inaccurate and wrong.
Who made the Switch the success it is? Gamers did. Sure the concept was NIntendo's, but they clearly struck lighting with this concept. People saw the concept, found it appealing and easy to understand, and boom, look how successful it has become. "Only for kids and those who gave up on gaming" Hahaha no. That is complete and total BS fanboyism on your part. You couldn't be more wrong. Made more evident from turning down a free system. Unreal...
The natural evolution of this concept would be to have a base unit at home that can run everything on par with the competition, plus run all or most of that software on a portable, detachable unit as well. If someone makes that hardware concept a reality, good f-ing night competition.
You should be more worried about Sony's complacency and lacking services. They could learn much from Nintendo and Xbox.
@Darten exactly as you say, the switch has been out for years and PS5 hasn't even been out of the 6 months yet! Not excusing what your saying because PS5 has barley anything to play. The games will come in due time I'm sure, two, maybe three years from now I'm sure PS5 games will knock switch games out the park.
@naruball Sony has every right to ignore Nintendo Switch. The companies target very different audiences who want different things from their games. Just look at headliners. This should be clear. Of course, there are some who would buy only one console, but there are those who buying both. In the end those overlaps don't really matter, because the core audience is very different.
@naruball Sure popularity is a factor but not in the context you say. I believe more people make their own decisions based on what they want. I know i do.
@TrueAssassin86x People buy the new Call of Duty the same goes for the yearly roster update of sportgames. Plus if you dont have that many consoles out there the sales wont be great.
