If there’s one thing we’ve learned during lockdown, it’s that local multiplayer games still have their place. But while there are many options on the PlayStation 4 – check out our list of Best PS4 Local Multiplayer Games – this brand new montage trailer illustrates that PS5’s library is already fairly strong in the couch content space.
The video focuses on a handful of first-party and multiformat releases, including NBA 2K21, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, FIFA 21, DIRT 5, Overcooked: All You Can Eat Edition, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. It also puts a big emphasis on the DualSense controller; obviously you’ll need to own multiple pads if you plan to play with pals locally.
Do you think split-screen and local multiplayer is still an important feature, and what kind of games do you like playing with friends and family? Let us know in the comments section below.

I play a whole lot more local multiplayer than online so it’s nice to see them emphasising it. I’ve played a load of Mario Party in lockdown with my family and also some Smash and Mario Kart. I haven’t really played that much on PS4 other than some Tony Hawk.
For me couch coop is the best way to experience video games especially Diablo 3!
Sony, what are my girlfriend & I supposed to play after platinuming Sackboy!?! Call of freakin Duty...
Maybe R&C: Rift Apart could include couch co-op ala Nintendo Mario games but better
I love playing local multiplayer games with my family! We're still new to the Playstation ecosystem but we've found some really fun games so far. We started by grabbing Racing Bros. since it was free (we, uh, quickly saw WHY it was free, but we still like to have a laugh with it once in a while), and soon after that we got Gang Beasts, which we've had a lot of fun with. Rocket League has gotten a lot of play here, as well as COD Black Ops 3, and we recently bought Minecraft (for like the 6th time) and have been enjoying that together.
Dirt 5 really caught my eye in that video - is it really as good as it looks? I'd love to play more games that take advantage of the DualSense's features.
@Ghostngoblins and also little big planet series!
Waiting for Astro Vs. Sackboy Kart
ah hells yeah i love me some coach co-op!!!!!
overcooked 2 is one of the better couch co-op games for ps4 - so much fun!
@2cents Yeah. Why promote something if you barely make first party games that actually support the feature.
I play with wife Diablo 3, Overcooked, Moving Out and Monopoly. She is not good in twin stick games so our options are highly limited.
@Floki
pessimism - clever marketing to sell extra controllers and charging stations
optimism - a sign of more local coop to come
@2cents You don't really need clever marketing to sell extra controllers. Just make enough random colors, and people will buy them. And if the rumors of stick drift and faulty triggers are true. Most people will probably replacing controllers every couple of years
Hahaha omg they actually put Cold War zombies which DOES IN FACT not allow local multiplayer without two PSN accounts. Here’s your local multiplayer which requires you pay for online 😂👌
I love playing couch co-ops, but unfortunately my wife is terrible at gaming..
@2cents lol. My GF and I are moving at a snail's pace. 3 levels in the last two weeks. So the good thing is that Sackboy will last us a while.
As soon as Sony remaster Champions Of Norrath for the PS4/PS5, it'd be couch co-op heaven!
Games such as LBP (why not remaster the first two?), Bomberman (the Ultra version not the awful R) and Diablo 3 proved that the local multi-player feature was always a big hit on the PS3 and that carried on into the PS4 so why not the PS5? People are going to have to save up though if they want 4 player split screen gaming though as those DS5 controllers aren't cheap.
Local multiplayer should never dissapear. I never liked to play online, never liked to find "new friends" online. As much as companies advertise online multiplayer as "never play alone", it will never feel like playing with someone that is right next to you.
