Sony has attached a 3rd September, 2021 release date to its Resident Evil movie reboot. That’s right at the beginning of the US’ Labor Day weekend, so it makes sense in terms of timing; whether theatres will be widely attended at that point remains up for debate. Don’t be surprised if it gets delayed, like the Uncharted movie.
While the film’s yet to get an official title, we do know that it’ll star Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield. She’s probably best known for Maze Runner: The Death Cure, but UK readers are more likely to remember her from Skins. Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Hannah John-Kamen will play Jill Valentine, while Robbie Amell will play Chris Redfield and Avan Jogia will play Leon S. Kennedy.
There’ll also be roles for The Umbrella Academy’s Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, while William Birkin will be played by Neal McDonough. The whole thing’s been written and directed by Johnannes Roberts, and is set on the night of the Raccoon City incident in 1998. You may recall that filming wrapped in late December, so this is in post-production now.
“With this movie I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and recreate the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them while at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today's audiences,” Roberts said as part of a press release on the flick.

Chris Valentine? You mean Chris Redfield right?
@Kaizen753 Fixed!
Ahhh Effy. Cool.
God, Skins.. now that takes me back. Mainly for the twins, more specifically, Emily. Smokin'
Just keep Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich far away from this, please. It'll be pretty cool if we actually get something watchable this time.
@Ralizah Doubt it. These jokers have never made anything that wasn't *****.
This cast is horrible can we just...Not make RE movies at all?
Here's hoping it turns out better than the other Resident Evil movies.
Well it can't be any worse then any of those makeup commercials masquerading as Resident Evil movies? Can it? At least the character list resembles the games
I think is too early for a Resident Evil movie after so many trashy movies I think many of us need to recover from that nightmare
As much as a derive pleasure from trashing PWS Anderson's series, at least he had some sort of "vision"; an early 2000's, ADHD, Mountain Dew riddled vision, sure, but it was its own thing.
Looking at the credentials of this director (47 Meters and Strangers: Prey at Night were not just next level awful, but BLAND), tells me that this will be a bottom level Blumhouse knock-off; at least Anderson has Event Horizon to his name - a genuinely creepy shocker.
This will be a visually stale, jump-scare filled borefest.
The cast list sounds awful, verging in some cases on an almost porn parody tier. Tom Hopper usually plays pretty simple-minded hunks. I think I first saw him in London's Burning or something like that but he was also in Black Sails as a guy that was always behind the curve, mentally outmaneuvered by everyone. That's not how I think of Wesker. Kaya Scodelario has been in a load of E4-tier crap and looks far more like Jill than Claire.
More importantly, no mention of Rebecca Chambers who is objectively best girl.
Hyped for this. It's gonna be really mediocre.
Blerg. I guess it couldn’t be worse than the Mila Jovovich films but seriously I don’t care. The films take everything that’s great about the games and flush it down the toilet over and over for 2 hours at a time...
I actually really like the cast other than Scodelario, who I loathe in every single program she’s in. Urghhhh Skins. Hannah John-Kamen is totally underrated and Robbie Amell is just the right level of lovable meat-head to work.
@Keyblade-Dan the cast is good
Kaya is good, she was fine in last Pirates and in Crawl. Haven’t seen anything else. Don’t write her off because of earlier work, everybody has to start somehow.
@Ralizah Only the first movie was good too watch.
This movie will be terrifying to watch.
Terrifying that you chose to watch it.
I hope this movie is better than it's predecessors, my fingers are crossed.
@Ralizah you guys love mentioning them even though they not involved cause it's reboot not a sequel
@Keyblade-Dan the cast is horrible?😂
@JB_Whiting bland? Sweetie
@Taylorzombie
Yes, bland: no flavour; no personality; no tension, or visual flair. His resume is filled with direct-to-video schlock that somehow squeezed into cinemas (because, well, they're easily profitable on moderate to small budgets and casual film-goers are eager to eat up cheap scares).
I'm saying this out of love for the series, I don't think it is in reliable hands, but we'll see; the cast looks good.
@Matroska Rebecca's great but true best girl is Ada...who I think also hasn't been mentioned at all? Which is a blessing in disguise if Becky and Ada escape this 95% likely to be a trash fire movie
@JB_Whiting ok clown
