Resident Evil 3 PS4 PlayStation 4 1

Sony has attached a 3rd September, 2021 release date to its Resident Evil movie reboot. That’s right at the beginning of the US’ Labor Day weekend, so it makes sense in terms of timing; whether theatres will be widely attended at that point remains up for debate. Don’t be surprised if it gets delayed, like the Uncharted movie.

While the film’s yet to get an official title, we do know that it’ll star Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield. She’s probably best known for Maze Runner: The Death Cure, but UK readers are more likely to remember her from Skins. Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Hannah John-Kamen will play Jill Valentine, while Robbie Amell will play Chris Redfield and Avan Jogia will play Leon S. Kennedy.

There’ll also be roles for The Umbrella Academy’s Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, while William Birkin will be played by Neal McDonough. The whole thing’s been written and directed by Johnannes Roberts, and is set on the night of the Raccoon City incident in 1998. You may recall that filming wrapped in late December, so this is in post-production now.

“With this movie I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and recreate the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them while at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today's audiences,” Roberts said as part of a press release on the flick.
