Sony may not be able to ship enough PlayStation 5 consoles to meet demand, but it did get enough units into the United States retail chain to break a decade old dollar sales record. According to the latest NPD report, the console raked in more revenue in January 2021 than any other system has since the Nintendo Wii in 2009. It was outpaced by the Nintendo Switch in terms of units sold, but this is still a positive result for the next-gen system.
It was a huge month for the industry overall, with total spend up 42 per cent year-over-year, tallying a record $4.2 billion in total. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was the best-selling game, but Assassin’s Creed Valhalla continued its spectacular performance, and is now the second fastest-selling entry in the series.
Even more impressively, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales finished in third place, as Cyberpunk 2077 dropped like a rock – from second position in December 2020 all the way down to 18th place, albeit with digital sales data excluded. Hitman 3 failed to make the overall top 20, although its digital sales data is also absent.

@Playstation They're definitely not all going to scalpers, that's a misconception.
The software sales of games like Hitman 3 (which were over 50% on PS5 in the UK) disprove that theory. Here we see Miles doing extremely well, presumably because of the strong PS5 hardware sales.
Hitman 3 deserves a spot on that list so much more than most of those titles. It’s excellent to have the entire trilogy on PS5 and it’s a spectacular PSVR game.
@get2sammyb
Isn’t Miles also on PS4 though? I bought it for the PS5, but without breaking it out by platform, those sales are for PS5 and 4.
As for digital sales, it’s a shame those numbers aren’t included, but I doubt Microsoft is willing to disclose the numbers from their digital storefront. A metric more vague and ambiguous is much more likely.
@lacerz It is, but all the data we got from the UK showed it was selling much better on PS5.
Bruh, I don't think anyone is claiming all of them are going to scalpers. Like, it's undoubtedly a problem, among a few.
Wtf is with the constant minimizing on this topic? A month ago the site was posting videos of lorries being hijacked ostensibly for PS5s but now there's not a considerable dark market for these things? Um, okay.
Apart from all this scalping malarkey, it seems like it's been a pretty great console launch to me.
Far better than the x box 1 why or whatever it's called.
Im glad to see Demon’s Souls in the top 10 best selling games of Jan 2021 for PS4/PS5.
Also Miles Morales is killing it.
Too many people sleeping on Immortals. Game is great! Maybe a BOTW clone but it does it better!
@Shadow_Beast You cant really judge any of those games by those numbers, especially when it doesn't show digital sales. And the fact there are lockdowns all over the place, making it hard to purchase in stores. I mean Ghost might have only sold like 200 copies for all we know. And that would not be good.
Pleased to see Immortals there, curious how its sold overall.
blows my mind to see cold war number 1, is it just me or post ghosts cod just feels different....
