Finnish developer Housemarque has put out its latest HouseCast dev diary, which you can watch above. We suggest you do, because as well as two members of the team discussing Returnal, we get some glimpses at brand new gameplay footage too.
As before, the game itself is looking really slick. The studio's penchant for intense action and colourful, screen-filling effects is present and correct. With plenty of manoeuvrability and crazy alien creatures to fight, it's looking like a lot of fun.
Game director Harry Krueger discusses bringing Housemarque's signature gameplay from 2D or top-down perspectives into a third person view, mentioning the challenges of adding verticality and having threats coming from multiple angles. When it comes to controls, Krueger speaks of a desire to have responsive, tight, intuitive gameplay. This is something Housemarque has nailed in the past, so we have faith this will play wonderfully.
He also reiterates how the game will use the adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller. The team is using the L2 button to give you two functions instead of just one; squeezing the trigger half way will aim down sights, and pressing it fully will switch the weapon to its alternate fire mode. It's designed to be "intuitive and seamless", reducing the amount of inputs a player will have to remember. If you prefer a more traditional button layout, the game has fully customisable controls, too.
It's looking great so far — we can't wait to get a proper look at it soon. Returnal is due for release on 19th March. Will you be giving this game a shot? Hook shot into the comments section below.

give me this. Looks so much fun.
Definitely an air of the old Space Harrier game about this in some parts of the gameplay.
WillI I buy it at release for full (over)price? No way !
Will I buy it at a sale and play the crap out of it ? Hell yeah !
Really looking forward to this one, looks really good a bit like Dead Space on speed 😂
It looks really good and I'm so excited to play it, but to add an extra beat to a horse of the dead... I can't afford to pay the £70 asking price. I want to support the devs but I also don't want to encourage the high price that Sony are trying normalise.
I'll make sure to buy it new so they get some money from me, but I'll wait until I can find it for a more reasonable £30-40.
Looks pretty good but £70 launch price is pretty much a death sentence for this game
Have this preordered unlike others here I’m not to broke to support housemarque day one
I’m not a rouge like fan, but I’m really interested in this game. Especially after hearing about the unique use of the adaptive triggers.
Gameplay is cool.sony sure taking theyre sweet time buying bluepoint.housemarque and kojima.word up son
@velio84 your first edit is simply not true, if enough people don't pay the new high price for games Sony will lower the price eventually. Especially in the UK and EU as the price hike is not comparable to the rest of the world.
This looks really good. Very much looking forward to it.
I preordered, looks great!!
I preordered this game and have faith it will be worth every penny.
Someone call the WAMbulance for all these cry babies who complain about the price. Jesus really?
@Old-Red if a enough people don’t support this game housemarque could get shut down. the studio already been struggling because their games hasn’t been selling that well.
This looks like Housemarque have taken everything they’ve learned from each game they’ve made, added some next gen power, and created an absolute beast of a game. Looks amazing, and will be preordering. Yes it might be £70, but you’re not buying a Resogun here, it’s a full blown proper releases. Cannot wait to play this.
@Old-Red Good luck actually having that happen. Enough people aren't going to "boycott" the price hike. People that will are like hardcore gamers. In the minority. The "normal" person is going to just buy a game if they want the game.
I understand times are tough, but if you bought games you really wanted at $60, I have my doubts that the extra $10 is really going to break you as I doubt you bought tons of games when they first came out anyways.
As good as it looks, I doubt I’ll buy it. Too much of a backlog now to need to pay over the odds for games day one and Housrmarque games generally come to PS Plus at some point so...
I don't have a ps5 yet, but this is one of the games I have my eye on and really looking forward to playing. I personally don't really want £70 to be the new standard for games, £60 for new AAA games might have been more acceptable, however people do seem to be complaining a bit too much lol. I also heard Jim ryan say in a recent interview that the prices will vary so hopefully they lower returnal to £50 like the new spiderman games was, otherwise I fear it won't spell too well initially. I do hope Sony buy housemarque actually, even if only to stop Microsoft from typing to acquire them lol
And just to be clear my previous comment wasn't me complaining about the price, but rather expressing my concern about it not selling well
"The team is using the L2 button to give you two functions instead of just one"
Where have I seen this capability before....?
This game looks fantastic and genuinely unique, but - to add to a repeated sentiment - it's dead on arrival at £70.
We saw this with The Order 1886, a game I'm sure would have been much better received at more modest price point. I bought it a few months after release for £20 and LOVED it, but the damage was done and it never got a sequel.
Unfortunately the best I'm hoping for is that this will be a lesson for Sony that will benefit future releases. That and a blast to play after a price cut.
Looks good but I'm another one who will throw my hat in the ring and say I will never buy a game at £70 ever. It also does have a PS Plus feel to it and that may cause me to hold back and wait even longer than the usual sales.
@KilloWertz I never usually pay £60 for any games. I paid £40-45 for Ghost of Tsushima and Last of Us 2 on release last year. This is why a sudden jump to £70 is such a kick in balls. I'll admit I paid £60 for Demon's Souls, but that was based on new console hype. I can afford to pay £70 for a game, but I chose not to because I think it's unjustified.
I've already seen a drop from £70-£60 for PS5 games, so the price is clearly not selling as many games as expected. A few more flops will only help to bring the prices back to something more reasonable. We have a lot of power as consumers, and to act like we have no choice and have to submit to price gouging is pretty defeatist.
Gunvalkyrie 2: time to break another controller (and your fingers)
This looks rad! I find two stage/pressure sensitive button inputs (Metal Gear has always done this extremely well) very intuitive and am excited to see how they utilize the DualSense to its fullest. I am hoping for a little more variety with lighting and environments then what’s shown here as it’s all very...dark.

@Jimmer-jammer That's my one complaint too. The gameplay looks fantastic but I'd hope for a little more variation in the environments, hopefully that's something that'll become more apparent when we see more of the game. Not a dealbreaker if not but it would make that high price a little less of a block.
This looks pretty cool, but I’m not paying $70 for it. I’ll think about it if the price goes down.
@velio84 If sales are affected by more than 1/6th, then yes, the price will come back down. Sony will lose money otherwise, and they only want the new price if it makes them more money. Considering many other publishers aren’t following suit, Sony will have a hard time keeping the price.
I absolutely abhor controls where you have to initiate a "half pull" to do something significant. Glad to hear they're customizable.
The argument against rising prices is so illogical imo. I keep seeing people say they'll wait for sales when the game is half off, they can get it on ps plus, or something similar. That's all fine, but that tells me you were never in the market for the game even at $60. Gaming on a budget is nothing to be ashamed of. But it doesn't make sense to complain about something that wasn't going to impact you in the first place.
I want to support devs and especially ones that make great games. That being said, from the original trailer, this game looked more like a story driven game (which I was really excited for). Now it just looks like a third person shooter. I need a demo to convince me to get this early. Where did demos go anyway. PS5 was suppose to have some great demo feature that has not surfaced. Don’t get me wrong, if it’s a great third person shooter I will still enjoy it. Was really hoping for something different. Maybe it still will be.
@Old-Red price gouging isn’ta $10 increase and how did you pay 60 for Demons Souls? I don’t understand how you people think $70 is overpriced when you’ll spend that much on Vbucks or CoD points for a single season, or you’ll purchase $100+ Ubisoft special editions without batting an eye.
This will be a Day 1 purchase for me. I love Housemarque games as well as Rogue-likes. The $90 CAD price tag is a bit steep but I'm willing to take the plunge.
@StonyKL so a measly 10 dollar increase is where you’ll draw the line? The logic ceases to amaze me
@2cents It's not $70 it's $95 for us and a £20-25 or $35 rise in price essentially.
@WizzNL sounds like you can’t afford next gen and should stick with PS4 until you save up enough money
@Old-Red $90!!?! Well okay then that change things. I couldn’t bring myself to pay $90 for Demons Souls Digital deluxe, nor did I pay 80 for Sackboy special edition, but I still bought their standard editions
Welp I can't pre order or even purchase a game for a console I have yet been able to get my hands on sooooo yeah.
@2cents nope, drew the line at £20.
But even if it was £10 being too much, games were £40 - £50 new last gen. Going from £50 to £70 is a 40% increase which is beyond crazy so yes that line is easily drawn.
And you have to remember this isn't to buy a single game. Must have about 100 games bought last gen at least. Paying an addition £20 for each game is an extra £2000 by that logic. I just cannot afford that on top of what is already being paid.
Without buying games £20 or under my games list would be more likely 10 games strong at best.
I pay a decent chunk of money to gaming, but if they were all £70 then all my money would only go to Rockstar and Naughty Dog games, because I know they are high quality. There would be no way I'd take a chance on a game like this otherwise. Especially with the higher likelihood of it going to PS Plus than the next GTA or Red Dead.
Simplest example is I have 2 games for my switch and I paid full price because I had no choice. Mario Kart and Zelda. Because of the amazing sales on PS I can expand my library and spread my money across multiple devs and not just the big guys.
This is one of the three I voted for in the poll. I think it has the best looking monsters of anything I've seen lately.
I hope Sony is paying Housemarque a good chunk up front for this. Not only is the retail price higher than games of the past, but this game is made for PS5. It's going to come out at least 2 months before ps5's are available at retail near me, so as much as I want to support this, I'm not going to buy games for a platform I don't have.
this will be a day one buy for me love HM work.
£50, £60 or £70 is not the issue (for me).. i'm not convinced it's a game that justifies being a full price release.. it's more ambitious than their usual stuff, but are the levels not procedurally generated? it's not like they've had to handcraft huge environments. when i first saw it, i expected it to get a price-hike in comparison to their usual kind of games, but figured it'd be something like £29.99.
This game looks so nice! I will get it anyway but most people will be put off by the price
The price of the games are ridiculous especially for an AA title, looks like I will be sticking to renting 80% of my games this gen and the other 20% will be games from sales
The dude above me is right. I can afford 70 for a game. But I expect Horizon quality for that price (and would still wait until a sale). This is not Horizon quality. We'll see when the reviews come, but this game should be priced at $40 to make a killing. All the scenes look similar, though it does look fun.
It does look fun for sure, but 80€... Bit steep. I'm not getting this one at launch, waiting for reviews and a sale.
Two factors that I'm also going to consider are the longevity and replay value. Paying 80€ for something you can beat in a weekend is not an option
As a regretful owner of the Digital PS5, I have no choice but to wait for a BIG sale, especially considering it'll likely be sub £35 within a couple of months physically.
@WizzNL 100% agree. It's about the principle. Most of these games aren't suddenly worth £20 more, so why are we suddenly having to pay these hikes? I am guessing it's Sony/Microsoft's way of clawing back some of the lost revenue from that huge development cycle in creating the next gen consoles. They will likely only break even with the hardware, so cash will come in via the software.
