Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War PS5 PlayStation 5 1

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is well into its first season now, but developer Treyarch’s keeping things fresh with a mid-season update on 14th January. Starting next week you’ll be able to enjoy a new Fireteam map named Sanatorium, which is described as a “Soviet experimental health retreat”. The blurb explains: “Low wooded hills provide cover for fireteam squads to gain reconnaissance over the main, roughly circular-shaped main ‘hotel’: a concrete, brutalist architectural behemoth flanked by lakeside structures and a large wooden dock.”

The new map will be flanked by a fresh six-versus-six mode called Drop Kick, which sounds a little like a variant of Hot Potato. “The round begins with each team racing to the location of the nuclear briefcase and attempting to pick it up,” the overview says. “Anyone grabbing the briefcase is automatically equipped with a powerful pistol, but it’s ideally up to the rest of the team to keep the briefcase-carrier safe. The team with the case gains access to launch codes, as well as an ever-increasing score for their team.”

One interesting wrinkle in Drop Kick is that if you’re playing as the briefcase carrier and you’re killed, you won’t respawn until your carrier has been eliminated and the McGuffin has been dropped.

Meanwhile, those of you who play Zombies can look forward to a new mode named Cranked, which will see you self-combust if you go too long without bringing down the undead. And Raid will be added to Onslaught as a PlayStation exclusive extra. The developer stresses that this isn’t the full extent of the update, with more to come, although it’s yet to provide any additional intel on what to expect.
