The Game Awards attracted over 83 million livestreams in its 2020 incarnation, although we’re still trying to figure out exactly what that metric entails. According to creator Geoff Keighley, viewership was up an impressive 83 per cent year-over-year, and perhaps most impressive of all, it peaked at 8.3 million concurrents. To be fair, that latter number is extremely impressive.
As part of a stats blast, Keighley explained that watch time increased by 129 per cent across Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook Gaming, meaning that it was able to retain viewers better than last year. It was a much punchier show overall, in our opinion – an impressive achievement under the unprecedented circumstances this year.
Overall, we enjoyed this year’s show quite a lot, and as we’ve been saying for a while, it’s hard to imagine how the format could possibly be refined at this point. It wasn’t very good but it was better than it was before!
Watched the first 2 years, found them boring and kinda lame, haven't watched since. Now I just watch the game blogs and news sites for an overview of everything that happened. Saves me a lot of time.
@nessisonett
In a year of a lot of nothings, something beat the hell out of nothing.
Yeah because we have nothing better to do.
Sadly the game awards is less about the actual awards and just a showcase for overhyped trailers and celebrity endorsements (in place of actual industry people). I think about over ten awards were given away in quick succession without any proper buildup, different presenter and acceptance speech. Sadly Geoff Keighley has forgotten in the rush for viewerships and sponsors he's neglected what TGA was meant to be about.
Yes I watched the whole show, I found it entertaining and enjoyable. After all it was a show celebrating games and gaming. When you factor in the fact we are still under covid-19. It was amazing how well they did considering that.
Screw e3. G.Keighley should just make an event during this time instead.
Watched it for 2 hours but I wont watch it next year. It was game advertisements with a side of awards. It's cool to show something from the future of the industry but the whole point of award shows is to celebrate the achievements of the industry. It was almost like that was an afterthought.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand Yeah but still can’t knock the growth
But, but according to internet comments no one cares about the game awards.
People on the internet can't be wrong, can they?
Lots of coincidental 8s and 3s there
Thoroughly enjoyed it and so did my wife, who had much less initial interest than me.
I agree there should be a little more focus on the awards and fewer trailers, but overall a nice celebration of the hobby.
That can't be right, according to all the tweets and comments I saw on games sites, only Geoff and I watched the show.
3 hours of my life gone to trailers for kinda mediocre games.
Then quickly shoved in awards for 10 min...
I def overhyped myself for it this year tho. I thought with the lack of conferences this past summer there would be some cool announcements, especially with PS5 now out.
This year's game award was boring as hell and the world premiere trailer wasn't even good. The only thing I look forward in this event is the GOTY orchestra performance and it was a let down because its pre-recorded.
8.3 million people cared then? Thought people didnt care about the awards. Oh well atleast the real winner won not the whiners voice awards.
That would've been a good size audience to reveal Silent Hill to...OH WELL!
Very Nice. Usually enjoy it.
Had played a good deal of the games nominated this year. So I guess it made it more relevant
So Gal Gadot and Brie Larson really killed their ratings, huh. 😂
I would be curious next year, seeing as they hyped the hell out of the reveals and they all turned out to be duds. I wonder how that will impact next years show?
@Gaming365247 I watched it cause I thought they would try to prove they have some integrity and some connection to the gamers. But nope, so next year I won't watch it, just like I don't watch the Oscars. The "reveals" were pretty lame too and I can just watch those later anywhere and save my time.
@Markos
Oh i see still salty huh?
Maybe because this year people we hoping to see next gen gameplay but it was more of a advertising awards than anything just didn't have a live audience
Based on the chat, everyone tuned in simply for the Smash Bros announcement (Sephiroth). It was basically the only thing they were talking about.
