Alongside our staff-voted Game of the Year awards, each of our writers have crafted their own personal lists, covering their top five PlayStation 5 and PS4 titles of 2020. Today, it's the turn of reviewer Lloyd Coombes.
5. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Following up on one of my favourite titles of the generation, Miles Morales takes everything I adored about 2018’s Spider-Man title and cranks it up a notch. Between his new powers, affable nerdiness, and the believable relationships with those around him, I couldn’t get enough of Miles’ adventure, and swinging through the city just never gets old.
4. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2
This really was a nostalgic year in gaming, but even without rose-tinted lenses, THPS 1 + 2 is essential. With the help of muscle memory, I was kick flipping all over the warehouse level within minutes, sniffing out collectables, and ruining my baggy jeans like I was a teenager again. Thankfully, I have better hair these days – although I think the THPS franchise’s first two entries have had the superior glow-up.
3. Ghost of Tsushima
Ghost of Tsushima proved that Sucker Punch was right to step away from inFAMOUS. Offering a sumptuous open world, some unexpectedly resonant story moments, and fantastic samurai combat, I felt like I didn’t want to leave the isle of Tsushima. The post-launch add-on, Legends, is the icing on the cake.
2. Final Fantasy VII Remake
Much more than a remake, Final Fantasy VII’s sizeable first chunk has been turned into a love letter for anyone that set foot in Midgar in the nineties. The battle theme almost brought a nostalgic tear to my eyes, as stroppy SOLDIER Cloud eventually grew into a surprisingly endearing protagonist over the course of the 30 hour story. The way in which events are set up for the next game leave me itching to be reunited with my party again.
1. The Last of Us: Part II
The Last of Us 2's exploration of humankind’s baser instincts and desire to maintain a status quo of revenge and hatred above all else may not have won over everyone, but I found the experience utterly unforgettable. Strong characterisation, almost sickeningly brutal animation, and a much more flexible combat loop meant that TLOU2 achieved the seemingly impossible, and stands shoulder-to-shoulder with its predecessor.
That's what Lloyd reckons are 2020's top games. Do you agree? Tell us in the comments section below.

wow who's the misfit in this list lol! Sorry Tony, but your game should not be on this list.
This should be a fun week. And i agree Tony Hawk deserves to be in everyones top 5
This is almost my exact top 5. I'd just replace Tony Hawk with Genshin Impact.
One game in that list make me smile everytime I'm playing it, the other game is making me feels miserable when I played it. Final fantasy 7 and ghost of tsushima are my game of the year 😃
Swap spiderman with persona 5 Royal and Tony hawk with genshin and that's my list
4 of these would definitely be in my top 10 (maybe even all in top 5) and I haven't played the 5th. Nice
Ghost of tshushima.nioh 2.final fantasy 7 remake.streets of rage 4. Crash 4. Last of us 2 word up son
Yep.
1. Last of Us Part II
2. Final Fantasy VII Remake
3. Demon’s Souls
4. Ghost of Tsushima
5. (Reserved for Miles Morales 🤪)
That awkward moment where you haven't played, or even own any of the games on the list. =/
Only played one out of those five but plan on playing three of those. Not Hawks though, skateboarding ain't my thing!
So I guess by default I agree with his No. 1 choice and in all honesty I'd be surprised (albeit pleasantly so) if any of the others topped my personal regard for The Last of Us Part II. It truly was, for me anyway, an unforgettable gaming experience.
@MS7000 Whats in your top 5 dude?
@Darten Going from this list probably not... =)
Looking through my backlog history, I either beat or complete,:
Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition
Yakuza 3
Yakuza 4
Yakuza 5
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
Dragon Quest Builders
Persona 5 Royal
NieR: Automata
Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair
MediEvil
Overcooked! 2
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Judgment
In reflection, this year for me seems to have mostly been Yakuza. Currently playing Yakuza 7 right now.
@LobsterJohnson Honestly not sure. The only two games that came out this year that I have played (not including Yakuza ports) are Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Persona 5 Royal. Persona 5 Royal would probably be at the top, purely by the fact that I have finished that, and not yet finished Yakuza: LaD. But even that is an enhanced version of an existing game, so... shrug
@Col_McCafferty I'll just copy paste everything you just said as my comment. Played only TLOUII on his list and even if I played the others I doubt they'd top it.
@MS7000 No worries, dude. I've played new games throughout the year and have only played one of these (Final Fantasy 7 Remake). Sony's exclusive games have just not resonated with me this year.
@TheArt I played all but Tony Hawk and they're all great - TLOU2 is easily the best one though.
Nice list! I’d probably change Tony Hawk to Demon Souls or Doom Eternal and that would be my list.
@TheArt No but if any of them did then that would be awesome as that's how highly I rate Part II.
It's not intended as an insult towards either Ghost or FF VII nor the players that prefer either of these games over the ND sequel.
My only gripe with Miles Morales is it felt like an expansion rather than an entity in its own right.
But yeah echoing what other people said change Tony Hawk for Person 5 Royal (I never played the original edition). Stick that at the top of the list and you pretty much get what Id have. FF7R and TLOU2 might switch around to.
For me it's:
1. Ghost of Tsushima
2. Sackboy A Big Adventure
3. Persona 5 Royal
4. Spider-Man Miles Morales
5. Astro's Playroom
Honorable Mentions go to Cuphead (PS4 Version), Dragon Quest 11 S (PS4 Version), Crash Bandicoot 4, Demon Souls Remake & The Last of Us Part 2.
PS I was incredibly surprised that Sackboy was my 2nd favorite game of 2020, because I'm not much of a LBP fan (But I LOVED LBP Karting), and Sackboy A Big Adventure was barely on my radar (I always planned on getting it Day One) and it was almost a backlog game, glad I chose not to neglect this game, it's so damn good.
Hi there fellow gamers.
That is a good list. I loved playing THPS 1 on my Playstation one and THPS 2 on my Dreamcast back in the day.
As of now, not so much. but it was great seeing them revived and so many resonating with them.
My List of 2020 as changed a bit, but not that much:
1- Ghost of Tsushima;
2- The Last of Us part 2;
3- Astro´s Playroom;
4- Demon´s Souls remake;
5- Ni-Oh 2;
There you have it. Some of the most amazing gaming experiences I have played in my entire life.
What a time to be a gamer.
Cheers, stay safe and Merry Christmas gaming to us all
@MS7000 Good effort on Persona, no wonder you haven’t had time to play any other games this year lol.
1. The Last of Us 2
2. Cyberpunk 2077 (yes, i like it that much)
3. Wasteland 3
4. Doom Eternal
5. Final Fantasy 7 remake
All in all, 2020 was not a great year for the kind of games I like. The Last of Us 2 stands head and shoulders above any other game I played.
I can't even make a top 5 for this year.
All I know is Ghost Of Tsushima is the best game in several years.
Haven't played any games released after ghost.
1. doom eternal
2. ff7 remake
3. tlou 2
4. Ghost or Nioh 2
re3 remake was too short
1. Persona 5 Royal
2. Ghost of Tsushima
3. Yakuza Like a Dragon
Haven't played or completed any other 2020 games yet (Except Cyberpunk 2077 which I don't expect to be in my top 5)
Tony Hawk is absolutely incredible and is easily my top PS game this year, mostly because Hades isn’t on Playstation yet. The challenge system adds so much to the game it’s insane.
@Arugula It took me a while to get back into the swing of things but I’ve now got every platinum score, including 2.5 million on Skate Heaven! Only got the one secret score on Chopper Drop but you get a seriously cool deck for each level you master with the secret score.
3 good games, 1 overpriced expansion, and the revenge bad game. Fair enough.
@Enuo I dunno how anyone can really consider Genshin GOTY material. Played it, thought it was fun then the grind for characters pretty much ruined it entirely for me.
@Enuo if we’re going purely on hours played Genshin Impact would be game of the year and fast approaching game of the generation! (And only 2 of 7 areas/archons are published thus far)
