Alongside our staff-voted Game of the Year awards, each of our writers have crafted their own personal lists, covering their top five PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 titles of 2020. Today, it's the turn of reviewer Jade Sayers.
5. Astro’s Playroom
The perfect game to see in the PS5 era with. Astro’s Playroom is exactly the right blend of nostalgia and game-changing innovation to get me instantly hooked on the new generation console, whilst remembering how far the PlayStation brand has come. It’s a great platformer, bundled with an incredible soundtrack, and really has no right being so good for a free game.
4. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
I loved Marvel's Spider-Man on PS4, so there was only one choice when it was time to buy my first "proper" PS5 game — Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. There’s nothing more satisfying than swinging through the streets of New York and saving innocent bystanders from criminal organisations, or rescuing a cat from a sewer. A truly breathtaking game which really showcased to me how far the PS5 can go if this is its early stage. Though the storyline may be short, there’s so much to do in Spider-Man’s New York it doesn’t matter. It also perfectly sets up a sequel, and has me so excited for a reunion between Peter and Miles, and all that will entail in a future game.
3. Trails of Cold Steel IV
Trails of Cold Steel is hands down one of my favourite series ever. The fourth and final instalment is almost perfect, and had it not been for a few sticking points, would have probably taken a higher spot on my list. Trails of Cold Steel IV provides a mostly satisfying ending to an incredible saga, and is one of the most ambitious JRPGs I’ve played in terms of sheer scale. Getting to spend time with some of my favourite game characters one last time was a real delight, and it felt good to draw the series to its conclusion.
2. Persona 5 Royal
I was initially a bit dubious of playing Persona 5 Royal, having sunk 100 hours into the vanilla game. I wasn’t sure how much more I could get out of it, but boy, was I wrong. Persona 5 Royal took everything I loved about the first game and added to it, with new mechanics, extra social link events, and new characters. Another 100 hours in, and I can honestly say Persona 5 Royal is one of the most perfect JRPGs I’ve ever played. It’s so stylish, and features such an incredible cast of lovable characters who are a joy to spend 200 hours with.
1. Final Fantasy VII Remake
I came to Final Fantasy VII Remake never having played the original game (soon to be rectified, don’t worry!). I didn’t have many expectations as my own experience with Final Fantasy is a bit hit and miss, but I was blown away. The visuals of the game are spectacular for the most part, and I loved the story. I instantly fell in love with all the characters (Sephiroth), and the game just ticked every box possible for me. When I think of games I played in 2020, Final Fantasy VII Remake is definitely the one that had the biggest impact on me and the one I still think about most frequently even seven months after finishing. I feel incredibly lucky that I get to experience future games, and can even go back and play the original. Final Fantasy VII Remake also taught me I need to branch out of turn-based combat, and that I’m not as bad at action JRPGs as I think I am!

Wow....very different picks.....🎮🎮🎮
My favorite list, it's just missing Demon's Souls !
Brilliant list. Bravo Jade. Whilst i cant speak for Cold Steel 4 (i have 3 and 4 waiting to be played) im delighted to see it represented on a best of list. And of course FF7 and Persona are no brainers - as is astrobot. Miles was great, but too many crashes on my PS5 drops it down my list unfortunately. I'd say LOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima would compliment my list but i am a massive fan of this one 🙂
Nice list. I just bought FF7 in the January sale. I have played the original but only recently. Cant wait to jump into remake later today.
FF7R is also my goty. I played through essentially the entire Cold Steel series this year as well (started with the 1st game last december). As much as I loved the original Persona 5, I've yet to pull the trigger on justifying another 140 hours in that game. That will surely come in 2021
I like the list I have not played the remake but the original FF7 to me is my most played game for replayability no game has come close except maybe Yakuza 0 GTA San Andreas PES4 and Dark Chronicle.
This list resonates with me a lot more than the others. Cool to see people experiencing FF7's unique story for the first time in such a dramatically updated fashion. The original is a game I buy on pretty much every platform I own. I just wish I could find my PC physical from eons ago that came in that cool trapezoidal box.
I really need to get moving on the Trails series. I played the first Trails in the Sky years back and just sort of... dropped it. I wasn't impressed. But I really am curious to try other games in the series and see if they click with me.
I still need to play FF7 Remake, but I've gotta finish Dragon Quest XI S, Miles Morales & Sackboy A Big Adventure, and then go onto Telltale's The Walking Dead Series Definitive Edition & Sleeping Dogs, I'm also considering giving Red Dead Redemption 2 another attempt as I couldn't get into it on my first try due to over-realistic nature of the gameplay.
still not sure if i want to pick up persona 5 royale , maybe one day and I've yet to start the cold steel games, can't go wrong with your other picks though!
@anon_pel222 WOW what a thoughtful response, what a respectful view of people’s personal choices and what they enjoy.
Can you WOW us with your personal unique choices that let you look down on someone’s (personal) choices.
@Ralizah the cold steel series is fantastic. At least the first two that i've played are. Many say trails in the sky is better, but as i havent played those, i can't judge.
Really recommend the cold steel series. If you have a spare 400 hours that is 😂
@MightyDemon82 - Wait til it goes on sale, I've played both versions of Persona 5, and Persona 5 Royal fixes some gameplay issues I had with the base versions, while adding some new welcome additions to the gameplay, even altering some the boss fights; making them even more unique and adding another layer to the Villains. However while I enjoyed the new story content, I felt like it started to drag considering the bulk of said new story content is near the end of where the end is in the base version of the game. Honestly you can't go wrong with either versions, it's just the new story content they added near the end which started to drag, and I think it's mostly due to Persona 5 already being a very lengthy game, that the added story content holds Persona 5 Royal back a little bit.
@JustPlainLoco I will do I have a huge backlog as it is so i'll pick it up when i see it for a good price, Thanks. I loved the original version so i'm definitely curious to check out Royale!
@MightyDemon82 - Right there with ya on the Backlog issue, so many games I've been meaning to get to, but it feels like I'll never get to them. But yeah aside from the small gripes I had, Persona 5 Royal is still worth playing, but much like the base version, it requires upwards of 100 hours of dedicated playtime, so I can understand holding off on it for a while.
@Dr-M wow....Dr..... It's like an arrow pierced ur heart lol.....
Great list of games.
I am working my way through FF7:R now and loving every minute. My wife and children are watching as I play also, which is a great experience as I’m a big fan of the original.
Can’t wait to play Astro’s when I get my PS5.
FF7R had too many issues to be anywhere close to number one for me. It’s not a bad game, it just felt like a massive squandered opportunity and did the original story a disservice. The awful awful Kingdom Hearts-esque cop out at the end completely ruined it. And that’s coming from someone who’s beaten every KH game multiple times including RE:Coded on DS.
Can relate to this list the most, though I never played Trails of Cold Steel. I just agree to the overall sentiment that Japan will always have an edge over the rest wgen it comes to making great games.
@nessisonett personally loved the new direction the story took and way more excited than having "just" a remake.
@tameshiyaku They could have expanded the story without resorting to Nomura’s dreadful ‘mystery’ stuff that is in fact just incomprehensible jibberish. That’s what I wanted - an expansion of the story that delves far more into each area and we did mostly get that for the first half of the game. If you just removed the whispers then the game would be far, far better for it. The tease of a certain character at the end of the game was blatant fan-service that is setting the second game up to fail, just like we’ve seen with Star Wars. Some characters should just stay dead, no matter how many fujoshi have nosebleeds over them.
@anon_pel222 haha may be I was in a bad mood....forget what I said yo seem to be a nice person.
@Dr-M well thanks doc....
Enjoy and be safe....
Happy holidays and happy gaming
Glad to see Jade knows what's good. Best list I've seen so far.
Nice to see a very different list from the masses. Final Fantasy 7 Remake would be my favorite game of the year as well. I know some people had an issue with the latter part of the game, but it was pure joy playing the game, and I hadn't ever played the original either (well, not much of it).
Never played Persona 5, but might need to remedy that someday. It's just such a large undertaking.
Finally a solid list.
This is a great list! P5R and Astro's are brilliant, I'm currently enjoying the first few hours of FF7R and plan to get to ToCS 4 in 2021!
All the praise I see for FF7R has prompted me to get it.
I was outraged with the episodic method and felt being a remake it may ruin the charm and my memories of the original.
I played the demo and wasn't happy with Barrett or the anime grunts and sighs.
I hope my worries are cleared after I complete it.
Very much feeling this list. Trails of Cold Steel is the only one I haven't played so far but I think I'm gonna have to start with the first one and work my way up, which is gonna take quite a while!
Your number 1 was my number 1! Loved it so much. I want to go through it again, but waiting for some PS5 upgrade news.
