As you may know already, the PlayStation 5 records a short video when you unlock a Trophy, but if you’ve got your microphone on you may not know that it also captures your voice. One Reddit user realised that while playing Demon’s Souls, and uploaded his moment of victory for the world to enjoy. We can relate.
Obviously, you’re probably going to want to turn Trophy videos off, just because they do tend to take up a lot of storage space. Still, this is an amusing video, and this author’s definitely yelled out loud a few times during Bluepoint’s remake of the PlayStation 3 classic – usually when falling to our death while fighting Maneater!

@Arugula It's not listening to you, it's just adding a recording of your microphone to the video clip. 🤷♀️
Thats actually really cool 😂😂 I think i’ll leave it on for a while when I get a PS5
lol i have noticed that already when i got my Astro Playroom Platinum Loving the PS5!
@Arugula Fair enough. Well, you can mute your microphone and disable the feature if you want to. 👍
Depending on which privacy profile you choose at first boot, it may already be off by default. It was for me, as I prefer to start with restrictive permissions and open things up as I want them.
I think sony need to add the option "record video only on platinum trophy". The feature is cool but I don't want video on every single trophy I got.
Thats pretty funny actually, I might have to go back through some of my trophy clips
@Arugula You can also make the microphone muted by default in settings so it is only enabled if you manually unmute it.
It sounds like I am the only person who does this. I hate having live mics around me unless I am actively speaking to someone.
Strongly reminds me of Until Dawn and how the game would record your reaction to certain scenes (I think it was mostly jump scares). Only problem for me was that I played it in complete darkness and couldn't even see what was recorded.
This would be cool, especially for children or youtubers with their fake over reactions to anything.
Disabling Pic and vid for trophies is the first thing I did.
Will enable it for DaysGone 2
@naruball yeah that was my first thought as well. Hopefully devs will surprise us with clever use of this going forward! Like a trophy for singing into the mic or something.
Aw man, my voice hasn't been recorded for some reason. That's a shame. I'm pretty confident that I screamed and swore profusely on a couple of my wins 😅
@wiiware I agree, and with storage space being a premium on PS5 (until expanded storage is approved and turned on), I don't want a bunch of videos clogging up space for games!
I've left the trophy videos on, might get some cool video of a hard trophy or some epic clutch kill for a trophy, I just go into the gallery and delete ones I don't want, like trophies popping after story quests complete during a cutscene
But yeah if your not careful its gonna eat that limited storage
No doubt half of my trophies will pop with me either swearing or ...who am I trying to kid... Swearing 😂
The perfect console for China.
@Arugula I agree I wouldn’t want this, sorry but automatically recording you should be an opt in... not opt out! No matter why it’s doing it. I think Sony may find themselves in hot water down the road with this ability to record party chats whenever you want.
@solocapers That boss you beat after 50 tries i know what you mean. 😅
@evan23 I did it too, day one. Not a big fan of that orange diode indicating it is off but I’m glad it can be turned off by default.
I'm guessing that's a hard boss? Also, recording your voice after getting a trophy? Ehhh, I'll turn that off.
I want a ps5 😭 (more to say)
@Matej wait, orange means off and not on?? Oh dear... That's horribly broken and inconsistent with recording devices since forever.....
@evan23 you're not the only one. It's frankly creepy. It may be a few seconds, but it's still recording with little control over what really happens with that data. A hot mic is all it takes to topple world leaders..... Yet the world adopted hot mics as default. Suddenly Nixon looks normal.
Heck the threat of the always on recording is what made XB1 doa.
It would be frightening to know how much video/ audio is captured from your devices without your knowledge. This is just another small example and they àll add up as most devices are now linked.
@DrJames 1000% that!
@AJDarkstar heh, that didn't even become known until it was already a joke. I really expect any and all collected recordings go through whatever iteration of Carnivore currently exists.
Wow orange for mute is messed up. That also means it doesn't default to off, even with default private mode settings. Yuck. I'll have to set that manually, but that's definitely not The right lighting. Light on always, always, always means live recordings. Right down to the red "on air" lights in broadcast studios. Sony's not exactly foreign to the recording world... They're a monopoly in it. Weird oversight, unless it's not an oversight.
OMG the number of panicky privacy divas in these comments. No one and I mean NO ONE wants audio of your chip munching beer drinking self. This feature is clearly just for the consumer and youtubers to post/laugh at. Your PS5 is NOT "spying on you". You aren't that important, Broseph. Jeez, you'd think you didn't have a damn cellphone.
@NEStalgia it's a MUTE button not a MIC button. Of course the light is ON when active.
I will earn a trophy while I do inappropriate things. For anyone who decides to look through and listen to mine
