Will God of War Ragnarok be exclusive to PS5? Or will it be a cross-gen title, like Horizon Forbidden West? The simple answer is that, right now, we don't know. And apparently, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan doesn't want to talk about it.
In an interview with The Telegraph — which covers Sony's next-gen console in general — Ryan is asked whether God of War Ragnarok will be a PS5 exclusive. Ryan replies with a rather non-committal: "Sorry. I've got nothing to say about that today."
Obviously this is far from being concrete confirmation of cross-gen plans, but if Ragnarok is indeed a PS5 exclusive, then why doesn't the exec just say so? Instead, we're left with a vague answer that's going to ignite speculation across the Internet.
Now look, it could just be that Ryan doesn't want to deal with a potentially loaded question, especially since the PS5 is still so fresh. It is, after all, just one quote from a reasonably large interview. As such, we wouldn't get your knickers twisted just yet. God of War Ragnarok has a tentative '2021' release window — it probably won't be that long until we have official confirmation of platforms.
Would you be okay with God of War Ragnarok being on PS4 as well as PS5? Sharpen your axe in the comments section below.

Pointless article, we dont even know the name of the game and you think he will give any details about it?
Another explanation- PS6 launch title. 😂
Or PC. Switch and Xbox not worth joking about.
Considering how well the last game looked and ran on PS4, unless they are building a new graphics engine from scratch, not sure why it wouldn't be on PS4. Though I'm more curious if this completes the story or if it's part 2 of 3. If it completes the story it should be on PS4. If it's only part 2 of 3 and we'll need a PS5 to finish it anyway might as well make it a PS5 game.
But if it's due out in 2021 rather than 2023 or 2024 I'm guessing same engine and PS4 could probably run it.
Edit: The more I think about it, the more mad I get about what a garbage answer that was. He's the president of the company, so I'm guessing he's getting paid like the president of a big company, and he got asked a question he should have 100% been expecting, and "no comment" is all he's got? Loser. 😝
I read this to mean, “depends if we can make it work on a PS4”
It won't be otherwise they lose out on the over 100 million PS4 install base.
FFS, to hell with that. I already worry about how much more watered down Horizon Forbidden West will be than it could have been, and the PS5 certainly isn't benefiting by sharing its killer apps with the PS4.
So much for "we believe in generations."
Hoping for cross generation, so far it’s the only game I care from the new generation but I want to wait for the slim system in 3 or 4 years when the console gets more games
@Amppari Pointless how? President of PlayStation literally asked about the next God of War game, and he gives an answer. As a dedicated PlayStation website we can't exactly ignore it, can we?
The article even goes into detail about how the internet is going to blow this out of proportion. Far from pointless, I'd argue.
Isn't that his answer to everything though?
Needs to be PS5 only!!! Stop letting last gen gimp the current gen!
He should have just winked and the outrage would be on to break the internet Haha.
God of war sold 10M+ on ps4, there's no way sony want to make it exclusive only to ps5, they want the sequel to do better than the original game.
The reason ratchet & clank and demon's souls ps5 exclusive it's because they don't sells much (at least not 10M+) compared to god of war/spider-man/horizon fw.
In the end I think most people will buy it on ps5 and in 2022 we will get more true exclusive like demon's souls and ratchet & clank. I do hope the next gow is true ps5 exclusive though.
No, I will be pissed if it’s on the PS4. I’m already pissed Horizon is cross-gen.
When it comes to the advancement of gameplay, animation and AI, the PS4 will hold the PS5 back.
I'm not too keen when journalists decide to make their own conclusions from an interviewee saying "no comment."
No comment cannot be used to point towards a negative or positive response to a question.
Please PushSquare, don't reproduce non-stories like this. Stoking the fire and asking people to 'sharpen their axes' over something like this is not good. Why try to work people up?
@Futureshark From what I read, they just reported on the interview.
99% sure that it's a cross-gen game. Therefore, PS exclusive but not PS5 exclusive. Which is obvious really, personally i am more surprised that people expect the majority of new major releases to be next-gen, seeing as the PS5 (and maybe Xbox series X, i haven't payed any attention to it) is obvioysly rushed and will be "patched" throughout like an early access title. That, plus Sony's stategy on PS5 going from "we want people to transition quickly" to "nah we'll support ps4 for 3 years after all". People need to realise that it will take 2-3 years for games to actually
start taking full advantage of next-gen. For the time being, and with the exemption of some titles, PS5 (and maybe SeX) will function as a PS4 pro pro.
I suspect that, with cinematic action based games, we’ll just see the difference being 1080/30 and 4K/60 with massively different load times. Likely with the base PS4 having terrible performance. You would need the game built around huge Days Gone type crowd battles for it not to be possible to run on PS4 at all, and that’s still where most of the money is.
@Futureshark I'm sorry if anyone got worked up over a dumb closing line that refers to Kratos' axe.
To be fair, the article does talk about how this is "far from concrete confirmation" of anything. Like I said in an earlier comment, this isn't the kind of quote that we can really ignore if we're trying to cover all that is PlayStation. I also think we make it quite clear that people shouldn't flip out over this just yet.
if it comes to PS4 as well id be really surprised it would also give me less reason to jump to PS5 for the time being as well
@ShogunRok @Amppari i do agree with amppari, pretty pointless and if there is the premonition of upcoming internet outrage and modern day tribalism, why even mention it? Sometimes no answer can be an answer in itself, but in this case it's just no answer.
@GKO900. More like a ps5 pro.it should be 2tb.and 15 teraflops.if it comes to ps4 its no problem.more sales more better.kratos the g.o.a.t word up son
@ShogunRok we have not seen 1 second of gameplay pointless imo.
@tameshiyaku Well I'm sorry you feel that way, but the bottom line is when the boss of PlayStation comments on the next God of War, we're going to cover it.
Again, we always try to be fair in articles like this. Not saying it's you or anyone else in the comments, but if more people took the time to actually read the whole article, then I think we wouldn't need to worry so much about feeding the fire.
Given the freedom they tend to allow these studios it's probably just a case of waiting to see if it can run on PS4 before they commit to an answer that could later be slammed for being misleading.
GoW and HZD were amazing games, in terms of graphics, gameplay and story. I won’t mind if sequels are just continuation with some benefits for PS5 (faster loadings, ray tracing, etc.). Stop whining folks.
Could also be that even this close to launch they just don't know. RE8 was until very, very recently coming to PS4 and X1 but grew in scope to the point where I think they've fully canned the last-gen versions, or have said they might come at a later date. Santa Monica might be at a similar tipping point in development right now, & they might be having those internal discussions.
This isn't coming 2021 lol.
@ShogunRok: The President of Sony said no comment ( or i cant talk bout the game ) . So i have to agree its a bit pointless, since he doesnt say anything at all. Smart of Jim Ryan because he also knows the internet will explode and thats free advertisement and PushSquare is obviously helping with that by making an article about nothing. I dont mind, but it is pointless
Oh man! It's coming to Xbox, Switch, Game Gear, Turbo Grafx-16, the Atari Jaguar, and Tiger Electronic Handheld!
I can't wait!
I can't believe some of the ridiculous reactions here. It makes absolutely zero sense from a business and consumer perspective to not release a major IP on a system that sold 113 million units, a system that will still have an enormous user base for at least another 2 or 3 years. The only reason not to make it cross gen would be hardware limitations.
And I wish people would stop referencing the "we believe in generations" quote. Jim was absolutely clear about what he was talking about when he said that, but as with everything these days, certain individuals created their own interpretation and then got angry when the reality didn't reflect their narrative. Why would Sony turn their backs on an entire generation in the first year?
@ShogunRok I give you guys gruff all the time but when the boss of a company gives an interview and is asked about 1 of their biggest games being exclusive to their brand spanking new console and his answer is basically "no comment" I don't see how you could possibly not cover it. I really don't understand why anyone would even question it. NL be over there running articles about whatever damo finds in his closet that says Sega on it and this is Jim Ryan and GoW. smdh
I can't believe I'm actually reading an article in the Torygraph- I mean Telegraph now. Damn you, Pushsquare! (it's quite interesting though)
@rjejr Haha, I'm glad you share our perspective (comment on Damien notwithstanding!).
@JapaneseSonic that was the reasons why I grabbed a switch(botw) and ps4(hzd). I get it, software drives hardware. But why exclude 100m+ units and profits. Maybe this generation was rushed out. To be honest, GoTsushi looks damn good, up there with demon souls re.
Honestly, i dont mind any more. Yes i was a little taken aback by miles morales (although it makes complete financial sense in hindsight) going to ps4, and initially i was disapointed in the news about Horizon, but its not worth getting upset about.
Does anyone seriously think that a major fp exclusive like Horizon Forbidden West wont be built to make the most of the PS5 hardware? Come on. It will be leagues ahead - from the dualsense, to the loading, to the performance. I dont see it being held back. And if releasing on ps4 means Sony can make money to invest in more games? Thats ok.
So if GOW is on PS4 - thats ok too. Its completely ok. Provided the scope and ambition of the game on ps5 is not harmed by the last gen hardware, then it really doesn't matter.
I mean the game probably isn't going to come out until early 2022. Why talk about it now. It will probably be just on PS5.
I think he's really regretting that 'we believe in generations' comment from a while back. Now they either stick to that and turn down any money they could make from a 100m+ install base for the next few years, or they go back on that and undermine trust in their upper management.
Having just bought Miles Morales for my PS4, I'm totally fine with cross-gen games being a thing for the foreseeable future, but then that's a problem for Sony. If they don't prod players like myself to jump to PS5, we won't. At the very least, they could make it easier by having stock actually available 😂
Let's be honest the game won't come out in 2021, I'm going 2022 earliest.
I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with cross-gen releases. The days of massive graphical jumps between generations is over. Consoles by their very nature need to strike a balance between performance and affordability. If you are willing to pay for the smoothest, fastest, highest resolution version of a game then we have that option. More people being able to play a game should be celebrated. Gaming isn’t about membership to some barely attainable, exclusive club. Why should those who have to choose between rent or food on the table and artistic escapism be locked behind a wall? I deeply enjoy these experiences, why would I want to keep that enjoyment from others? I applaud this approach. Packing up my bleeding heart, given the current economy it’s simply good business to release on as many platforms as possible at this stage in PS5’s life.
Also, I for one appreciate the Pushsquare staple of punny pre-comment quips. Keep it up 😊
The next horizon game is going to be released on the PS4 as well as the PS5. So wouldn't be surprised if this was also released for PS4. Spiderman: Miles Morales is also available on the PS4. So for the foreseeable future all big Sony games will be cross platform.
This feels like pc gaming. You buy a new hardware but games don't get better, they just perform bettter. They need to sell ps5s too and this doesn't help. Ray tracing and better performance is not what I was looking for in next gen.
If horizon doesn't have flying robot mounts, I know who to blame.
This does worry me a bit. It better not be on PS4. It needs to be designed without fallen pillars and elevators to disguise loading. Game design is less restricted on PS5, and Sony needs to utilize that. I might not get it if it’s on PS4. My interest is Horizon is already dead. Granted, GoW is a much better game to start with.
@art_of_the_kill While I agree with the sentiment, it doesn't make financial sense.
Let's imagine GoW2 releases in the first half of 2021. They could target the ~20 million install base of the PS5, or ~120 million install base of the PS4. As much as I hate the reality and wish developers would abandon the last gen platforms immediately, it doesn't make sense to pour that kind of money down the drain if there is the possibility of targeting both.
It will most likely be on PS4 thanks to Jim 'we believe in generations' Ryan.
But this should absolutely be a PS5 exclusive.
@ShogunRok Yeah, never throw your bus under the boss, not a good career move. 😎
No this shouldn't touch PS4 in anyway, PS5 needs to start building it's exclusive library. How can we think we are getting the best gow possible when it has to play in 8 year old hardware. I excuse the launch games being cross generation but that should be it.
I’ll be legitimately mad if it comes to PS4
And until games start becoming exclusive to PS5 they will continue to look like PS4 games. This is why im waiting a few years
The question asked was kind of vague. His "no comment" could refer either to intentions of it coming to PC, or intentions of it coming to PS4.
At the moment I'm expecting it to come to both and will be slightly surprised if one or both are not included. I do think if it was truly PS5 only they'd already have been advertising that. So it's coming at least to one or the other of PC or PS4, I'd bet. But we can't tell which or if both yet.
I think that for now, he doesn't really know what to say.
PC ports have to be done right, otherwise Sony gets one hell of a backlash, see the Horizon's ZD PC version launch.
So they have to allocate proper resources for it, both in manpower and experience.
For now most of Sony's teams are busy trying to populate the PS5 with exclusives of it's own, since the list is really small. They don't have the time to do the necessary work for other platforms. That may change in the future... or not... let's not forget there's a pandemic outside, that may impact a lot of launches going forward.
Also, any PC port of a playstation exclusive would launch after at least 1-2 years after the playstation version, to allow the latter to sell as much as possible (if only because the piracy on PC is much higher than on consoles... that's reason enough to delay a PC version for a year at least).
God Of War Ragnarok doesn't even have a launch date for PS5 other that 2021, and even that one may very well change to 2022. What's there to talk about regarding a PC version, that may end up coming when the PS5 Pro hits the stores?
So refusing to talk about it for now was the right decision. If he were to say anything else, it would have been picked apart and twisted around for weeks on end.
Not taking any sides here, just looking at it from a different angle.
Does it really matter? Really?
Tbh I don’t think it matters anymore. We were all worried about cross gen games bc of Halo and how cross gen was the blam for the way it looked but literally every other game that’s come out this launch has proven that’s not really an issue. So I don’t care if it’s on last gen, if it looks and runs better on my Ps5 that’s all I care about
@art_of_the_kill HZD looked gorgeous on the base PS4 so im not worried one bit.
If they keep making games cross gen then we will never see the true capabilities of the new consoles.
@thedevilsjester isn't miles 79% ps5 and 21% ps4 on the uk sold?
Why sony doesn't make some of those 21 jump to ps5?
I think he forgets the people that buy their games are the same that buy the console early.
Late casual buys didn't buy gow or horizon. We did
@LiterallyDoNotCare GoW sold ~10 million copies in its first two months (making it one of the best selling PS4 games of all time). To sell that many for GoW2 on PS5 only would need literally a 75-100% adoption rate which is astronomical and unheard of. The only titles that ever come close to 50% even are Nintendo first party titles, and thats only because people (generally) buy Nintendo hardware specifically for those games.
As for casuals, thats a pretty narrow view. Of everyone I know that owns GoW on the PS4 (IRL), I am the only one that I wouldn't consider a casual gamer. I still have multiple friends that have yet to finish it, but have owned it for a quite awhile. I think "casuals", or even those that can't get ahold of a launch (window) PS5 or can't afford one just yet, or just don't have enough reasons to upgrade (a couple exclusives isn't incentive for many) account for a larger number of purchases than you give them credit for.
Don't get me wrong, I want them to make it PS5 only. That would make me very happy indeed; but I understand the reality of the early generation titles and as an early adopter, am willing to deal with that until a critical mass has migrated over to the PS5.
@thedevilsjester Casuals don't buy single player games.
Most of the people on my friend list that have it are not casuals.
Did those "casuals" got it day 1?
I think ps5 can establish more than 20m consoles sold when gow releases. Most of them would be the ones that bought gow in those 4 months.
@LiterallyDoNotCare Casuals don't buy single player games? Thats absurd. Casuals buy single player games just as often (if not more often) than non-casuals. Of everyone I know with a PS4 (IRL), other than me, they are all what I would classify as casual gamers (they play very irregularly, don't buy many games, don't play for long stretches of time, etc...), and all but one play only single player games exclusively. (Or play only the single player campaign of multiplayer games)
To muddy the waters even more, I am as far from casual as they come, and due to an ever growing backlog, I didn't even get to GoW until ~6 months ago (and Horizon Zero Dawn right before that, and I just finished Spiderman last month). My backlog is so long that even the best of games have to wait their place in line.
@thedevilsjester I think otherwise. My casuals on my friend list NEVER buy single player games. They stick to fortnite, fifa, 2k, cod, apex. That is a casual for me.
@LiterallyDoNotCare Only one of my friends plays online titles, they rest play only single player. In fact, some of them don't even pay for internet access, and some (even with internet access) don't have PS+ to play (most) of those titles. A lot of them play games like CoD, sure, but they play exclusively campaign/offline as a single player experience.
This part of the discussion really comes down to your definition of casual I think. I define a casual gamer as someone that casually plays games. They might play once or twice a week, or for a couple hours on the weekend. I don't define them based on the games they play (the people I know, not-IRL) that play the games you talk about are far from casual (they play those games non-stop, for hundreds and thousands of hours); but you are right, they do not tend to buy many single player games because they are more of a competitive gamer, not an experience gamer.
@thedevilsjester Your friends are hardcore then. They don't miss not playing a sp and not just play 4 or 5 games per gen. If they constantly are looking for new games, they are hardcore by my eyes.
Someone who doesn't care about games and just got a ps5 for cod is a total casual.
I make the differentiation by the games they play and the variety they play. Not by the amount the play.
@thedevilsjester I think we need new definitions.
Competitive gamer (wannabe esport player)
Casual gamer (plays one or twice a week)
Hardcore gamer (doesn't lose the opportunity to play everything on the console and buys other consoles to play the exclusives)
@LiterallyDoNotCare I have friends that haven't turned their PS4 on in over a month, but have played at least a few hours of many of the major single player games (they haven't really finished most of them, and certainly haven't platinumed any), I don't think that counts as hardcore by any stretch of the imagination. Thats as casual as they come.
I agree with you that we need new definitions (and those you propose are pretty close to how I would define them), it would certainly make discussions clearer and we wouldn't spend all of the time arguing a point that we both agree on.
(although, I define myself as hardcore, but I abhor multiplayer games, so I am not sure where that would fit in your definitions)
@thedevilsjester Ultra hardcore competitive gamer
@LiterallyDoNotCare lol.
I am sure we can both agree that we both wish GoW2 was a PS5 exclusive and that all upcoming titles were that way (I wish they would drop last gen from Cyberpunk even!); but I understand that the numbers are not there yet for huge AAA titles. Thats why I hope that GoW2 is an early 2022 game, rather than 2021. More likely to be (now) current gen exclusive.
@thedevilsjester I don't wanna play ps4 games anymore
@LiterallyDoNotCare I have a back log of at least 30+ PS4 games that I need to finish (all..10? of the Resident Evil titles, all 7? of the Yakuza titles), and a few stragglers that I played but never platinumed (like Witcher 3), so its going to be awhile before I fully move on. I am going to be playing a mix of PS4 and PS5 games for the next two years at least I think.
@thedevilsjester I have to beat 5 games and platinum 15 before I move on. So 2022 sounds about right
