Sony’s dreamed up some strange consoles in its 25 years as a platform holder, but the PlayStation 5 is surely is boldest design yet. With a popped collar, curvy mid-section, and sharp edges, it looks more like the kind of object you’d expect to find in a contemporary art gallery than next to a television. It also looks way better as a skyscraper, as this mock-up by 3D artist Danik Mishanin illustrates:
You can see more of Mishanin’s imaginative work on ArtStation and Behance, so be sure to check out his profile on both websites. Would you rent an office in this hypothetical PS5 shaped skyscraper? Call the lift in the comments section below.

I don't think that anybody realized that I was being ironic but I don't want to be known as "the guy who claimed that Sony doesn't make much money from anything beyond games" guy.
But seriously their cheaper headphones are garbage
Ha! that's brilliant work Danik!
I see they installed those ray tracing windows.
Don't surprise....if.. In future sony did think to build this type of skyscraper to pay homage to PlayStation.....
@HotGoomba
Financial services is also big business for them. 3 times larger than motion pictures in fact, and only a little under games snd services.
The cooling system on that building is probably next level
But does the roof have ray-traced puddles?
@thefourfoldroot That is very true.
@HotGoomba Their WH-1000 headphones have some of the best noise cancelling I've ever experienced from mainstream market headphones tbh
They're not Bose, but they're pretty great
@HotGoomba You know that Sony owns many companies (like Disney) and gaming studios
That looks like it might be smaller than the real unit though
@HiglyPoeticOryx Sony does not own Disney
Disney owns Disney
Right, so, are we crowd-funding this or what? Because it needs to happen.
@TheFrenchiestFry think they meant Sony owns many studios, just like Disney do
@TheFrenchiestFry I was talking about their cheaper headphones that break EASILY
I gotta say, it actually looks pretty darn good as a building. Very cool!
Not "way better" than a console to be honest. I remember some of the fan mock-ups of PS5 received some love here that were absolute crap. The PS5 is indeed a beautiful device.
I'd very much like a building like that though, would be a sight to see when you finally get to go out, whenever that is.
Looks like a 'modern' skyscraper but whether it looks dated in 20yrs, who knows LOL
@SuperSilverback I think that was a typo lol I think his comment is edited now
Series X looks like a fridge.
Series S looks like a smart speaker.
PS5 looks like a skyscraper.
I guess it's just too much to ask that game consoles just look like consoles.
I blame Nintendo (Note: joke).
The halls are too narrow, the AC needs ear protection, there's not a lot of doors at all, the coffee makers have $10 usage fees, and you have to pay original publisher price for every duplicate you take off the copier.
By my word the elevators are supersonic!
@HotGoomba far from the truth. A simple google search before making such a claim can't be that hard.
@GamingFan4Lyf I always thought the PS5 looked like a modem or Wi-Fi router personally
Or a vertical air conditioner with a piece of paper wrapped around it
@naruball I think the point he was making was that Sony obviously has other lucrative services, but in terms of generating revenue and attention, none are nearly as prolific as their gaming division. Even their movie division is constantly struggling compared to other big names like Universal or Disney
Can someone explain me the point of this article. Thanks
@L3GTRIGA Fun?
I mean, fun is still allowed in today's world, right?
@naruball I was talking about how most of their business is from Gaming. And I don't think people think of their movies or phones when they think Sony. When I think Spiderman, I think Columbia and Marvel.
@HotGoomba cameras
@SuperSilverback that is exactly what they meant, common sense is not common around here unfortunately
@TheFrenchiestFry "The cooling system on that building is probably next level"
Considering that even the back of my PS4 creates strong winds when running certain games, I fear that building may become a dangerous tornados generator.
@andreoni79 The fans would probably create seismic shifts in the tectonic plates even greater than Hawaiian volcanoes
I see they've used last gen reflections... That aside, I still like the look of the PS5. Just not looking forward to the white controllers.
You wonder how much they had to shrink the PS5 to have it fit in the small space between those buildings.
@theMEGAniggle WHY DID I FORGET THAT THEY MADE CAMERAS LOL
This needs to be built!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😂
@AJDarkstar You don't think this looks cool?
PS5 is like a basketball shoe. Sleek and futuristic look on their own but good luck to match it any outfit(furniture) and look good
I guess this is how some people imagine the actual size of the PS5. "Must buy an entire hangar just to fit my PS5!".
@rub3nmv ooo tell em
@rub3nmv Their camera lens tech I believe is also used by many manufacturers if I'm not mistaken.
Is Jesse Faden the Director of that building?
@HotGoomba Because their cameras are overpriced, with outrageous lens costs, and are relatively unpopular with less available dealers in many markets than competitors, despite genuinely being good quality with some nice features. And despite slapping the Sony name on them it's really still Konica-Minolta with a Sony badge taped over it and they bought the whole company to get the medial imaging division, they really don't give a flip about the cameras.
"SONY" as a consumer electronics brand has seen better days outside Playstation and the Bravia premium TVs. Most of their manufactured industry is in components (sensors, batteries, chips, LCD panels, etc.) Their presence in consumer audio is next to nil, but in the broadcast and recording world, for better or worse, they're ubiquitous. Profitable, but not as profitable as PS. They're a weird company in that their brand image focus effectively no longer exists, and the areas they do succeed in are places that aren't really household name industries anymore.
The one constant of everything "SONY" is that they're always the overpriced option in the market, no matter the field or industry, they always premium price everything, often laughably so. Sometimes though there's just no replacement for the particular niche their products fill. Playstation was the one exception to this rule where it's always (always except PS3) lead on mass market value rather than being "premium". PS5 feels like they're trying to change that, though.
It wouldn't be a Playstation if it wasn't a Marmite design. I personally love it. I might get one next year.
@rub3nmv Why has my joke turned into this argument I just wanted to be funny lol
@rub3nmv No I just forgot that they made cameras because I haven't owned a camera in a long time, and I did know that they made smartphone cameras before, but I forgot because I honestly rarely use cameras, even the ones on my phone.
@L3GTRIGA
ITS A TRAP!!!
I imagine the fins work to vent to console better. I'm into the functional look of it.
Like a building in 'Mirror's Edge Catalyst ' !
@NEStalgia I don't necessarily agree with your point about Sony always being the overpriced option compared to other brands. Their TVs are usually really well reviewed, but they are on a par price wise with the likes of Samsung & LG. They make one of the best reviewed 'budget' av receivers (STR-DN1080), Their noise cancelling headphones are in a similar price bracket as Bose, Bowers & Wilkins, etc & compare very well against them.
@deSade57 It could have something to do with their US pricing, but their TVs are typically always more expensive than anything samsung or LG here, excepting the high end stuff only sold at theater integrator showroom type places. They have had some fairly low end budget htibs and avrs though that were decent, you're right.a carry over from their old aiwa subsidiary. (Aiwa still exists but it's not the same company and not part of Sony anymore)
The headphone comparison I'll give you, only because i haven't tried Sony's, haven't seen them priced, and the Bose and b&w brands are similarly overpriced, under quality, lifestyle brands in general, though in the tiny niche of noise cancelling, these little competition and Bose ends up looking ok quality wise. Elsewhere in audio, comparing sony to Bose and b&w is fair and accurate, but not flattering to Sony
Pro audio though.... They're the standard, bar none. Not because theye the best, because they're accurate and cheap.... An unusual spot for them, admittedly.
@Sam-Bridges LET ‘EM KNOW! Those OG PS5 concept art renders that popped up all throughout 2019 were garbage, and yet, people were saying that the design didn’t matter. Only to now have a problem with the PS5’s design, which to me, looks like the PSX/PS10 concept I used to think of in my head as a kid. The PS5 actually looks like an expensive piece of next-gen tech.
Nice looking the skyscraper.
If you made the Xbox series X this size it would just look like some kind of futuristic detention centre for liberals.
😉
@anon_pel222 no. Their consoles pay homage to skyscrapers. They've been purposely designing they're consoles to resemble city skylines and sky scrapers for generations. It started with ps2. This concept is nothing new.
@NEStalgia Ah, I see. In the UK the pricing of TVs is similar to Samsung/LG models, so I guess it may well be market based. I went with Samsung's QE65Q95T in the latest generation as I'm paranoid about screen burn (I do have a habit of leaving things on pause on the TV), and the QLEDs seemed a good compromise for the PS5/general viewing. This was on par price wise with the Sony's over here.
I had a couple of Sony AVRs when I was getting into home theater, and was generally pleased (admittedly when the bug caught I ended up buying an Arcam AVR550, but still look back on the Sony's fondly).
On the PS5 design, I quite like it - but will be hoping there is an option coming to swap the white side panels out. It is just a console after all - if I want statement pieces to display I'll get them in a homeware store!
@TheFrenchiestFry Sony's movie division is not strungling, they have the biggest Anime platform, the movies they put out are mostly great and original unlike Disney who has to remake everything. And they have other branches that also do great, their cameras and televisions are one of the best you can get, their financial branch is rolling pretty good and their phones are starting to make a return in sales (slowly but still) and their even buidling a concept car, these guys have to much money to spend, I could see them building a skyscraper from the looks of the ps5 just for fun and marketing
Sony’s new world headquarters perhaps?
@Thefizzlee Sony's movie division just dropped in profit down $51 million in the first quarter this year, barely being helped by the success of Little Women, their animation division has taken years to find any semblance of actual success after movies that either did modestly or straight up bombed until Spider-Verse, all their ambitions for making a shared Spider-Man cinematic universe were basically thrown out the window at first since TASM2 grossed well below their expectations, the 2014 Sony Hack caused a massive corporate restructure, and despite the iconography of an IP like Spider-Man, Far From Home is literally the only film in that franchise that managed to cross a billion dollars worldwide in total box office take in (and it wasn't even completely produced by them alone; part of the credit also goes to Marvel Studios as well). This also comes after they lost James Bond to Universal, the critical and commercial failure at their attempt to reboot Ghostbusters, and after they cancelled Genndy Tartakovsky's Popeye for The Emoji Movie. Unless the new Ghostbusters actually does well and is well received, Spider-Man is pretty much the only big name IP they have left that isn't a black hole for making money, outside of their smaller Oscar-season films like Little Women or their Tristar productions.
So yeah, Sony's movie division isn't actually doing as well as you think. If anything it's taken them years to actually start making profitable films again.
That’s going to happen now isn’t it? That’ll be a building in Manchester or Berlin or somewhere in 10 years.
