October's PlayStation Plus games have been announced, and, well... The reaction hasn't been brilliant. For starters, we've got Vampyr. By most accounts it's a decent game (we gave it a 6/10), but it's the kind of semi-forgotten title that you'd expect alongside a blockbuster. Except there is no blockbuster — there's only Need for Speed Payback, which we gave a disastrous 3/10 review score back in 2017. So, er, we can't really say anything too positive about this particular selection.
But we're not here to preach our own opinions. As always, we want to know what you think. Vote in our polls, and then feed us your delicious thoughts in the comments section below.

I'd honestly forgot about them. Not interested in NFS, haven't liked them for some time. I have already played Vampyr and hit the platinum, it was an OK little game. I do wonder how the Spanish Flu / pandemic narrative will go over now given we are living through a pandemic as well. So another month not for me I guess. But I would urge people to at least give Vampyr a chance.
Don't care about NFS, but Vampyr is something I've had my eye on for a while. I'm looking forward to trying it.
I don't think I'll even add these to my library and never play them like I've done with other titles in the past 😂
Meh, take the rough with the smooth
Vampy is on PS Now. How do they expect people to get excited?
I was hoping for Binding of Isaac until I realized it was a ps+ game way back in 2014
Played and platinumed both. Would be happy with the selection if i hadnt tho lol
@thefourfoldroot PS Now is not available in my country. So I am excited, how about that?
@Matej
Clearly my comment was referring to people with PS Now or the ability to get PS Now, and who therefore wouldn’t get excited by PS Plus offerings if the games are already available to them (which seems to be every month now).
I'm honestly really pleased with these games. I've been interested in both for a while but never got round to playing them. Thing is most people will have played all the big games like the last of us and bloodborne. I'd much rather they picked games that picked games, like vampyre, that I'm I interested in but not so much that I've already bought them.
They're okay but nothing special. I'm just going to pretend Genshin Impact is a PS Plus game instead.
There should be an option in the poll that "I don't care about the games and pay due to online gaming and/or cloud saves".
It's been several years since I played NFS. And I don't have any of these games.
I don't mind the selection at all
Its about what I expect. They don't really give anything good.
They're decent games if you only have Plus but I've got PS Now and EA Access so it's a bit of a kick for me (again)...
You can't please everyone but perhaps they shouldn't upset their biggest supporters?
I dont care what people say. Vampyr was worth it alone. And its a helleva lot better than Street Fighter and PUBG last month.
Jezus its never good with this crowd. 😆
One more kick in the gut fir ps now subscribers...
It’s a 50/50 I mean I have EA thingy so I already have NFS and not really interested in Vampyr so like I said regarding last months selection, not for me but might be on someone else’s list I’m pretty occupied with other games anyhow!😀
Trying to finish off before the ps5 arrives!
Of course no one is happy with the selection. No one ever is. Why can't anyone ever be happy with the games they get for free instead of bitching? Oh wait because no one knows how to be grateful. They only know how to be ungrateful, hateful, spoiled brats.
@lordzand Because they already gave out all the good stuff years ago
@Flaming_Kaiser Right? Nothing can satisfy these neckbeards
@BubaMan Also not everyone can afford Now and EA. Like me.
@SwankyPaladin I think the issue arises because actually these games aren’t free like people keep saying they are.
PS Plus costs money and that’s why there’s an air of expectation each month as people have paid for these games. Yes they may have paid very little for them but it’s enough to create a level of expectation. If they truly were free there would be no bitching.
Anyway I’m looking forward to vampyr and also to see how Sony handle this service moving forward with PS5...
PS Plus games are like free samples, at the bulk stores. If I see something I may like, I partake. If not, I keep on walking. I don't bitch and complain, about the sample; I don't do a little touchdown dance. It's really one of those kind of feelings.
@Dodoo Yeah €5 a month is too much we need triple A for these prices. 😆
Just entitled kiddies man if its a sportsgame its bad if its shooter its bad if its a racegame its bad. If its a indie its bad no pleasing this crowd.
@SwankyPaladin Its getting old fast indeed. Everyone keeps bitching its somewhat sad.
I seem to be the only who liked Payback 😂
I'll give Vampyr a go too.
As per usual I will add these to my ever growing backlog of games. I am currently playing mafia definitive edition on ps4 and playing I ninja on ps2 so I am busy for now. I also haven't finished Ghost of Tshushima yet so no time for these 2.
Personally I’m very happy with this. Vampyr has intrigued me for a long time and just haven’t got round to playing it. Not really fussed by need for speed but I’ll play it.
Excellent lineup. Vampyr is a fantastic game with technical shortcomings and NFS is AAA popcorn gaming. I own Vampyr, but at least ppl can see how enjoyable it is.
When did Push Square take the 💰? They are very negative these days. Games with gold received Slayaway Camp and a horror game nobody heard of and they complain about two big name games on Plus?
I’m mildly pleased with getting Vampyr, I guess.
Need For Speed does nothing for me and I make it a point to stay away from any EA game with Micro-transactions in them.
I'll give vampyr a go for sure, already played Need for Speed though which I thought was okay tbh.
Mostly happy - I obviously have little interest in something that's already available on Switch, but I've wanted to play Payback for ages and it doesn't seem to be going Switchward anytime soon. In fact, come to look back now, it'll be the first 2020 IGC offering I'll be actually downloading and launching ASAP since Uncharted collection.😅
@thefourfoldroot like I've reminded before, PS Now isn't quite PS There yet. Going by Wikipedia page's 2019 source, it's been available in less than 20 countries so far. And even before it ever hit others, Sony dropped the Vita support, making the whole service a thing strictly for people who have time to play at home (and could theoretically invest in a used PS3 and a bunch of PS Store discounts for the sub's hefty annual price). But the bottom line in this context is that PS+ still has significantly broader reach.
"Why are you complaining about the free games that come with your paid subscription?"
Takes like this justify my misanthropy.
Vampyr is a good game but has horrible textures and framerates. The October PS+ is decent but it totally sucks for gamers who both have PSNow and PS+.
I have somehow managed to get through life without ever playing a Need For Speed game so I'll give it a go for ten minutes. Vampyr I'm actually interested in so not a bad month for me.
I've been holding off on getting Vampyr in a sale as I thought it may come to plus at some point so happy with that.
Despite the score I'm happy with Need For Speed even though the last one I played was pretty bad too.I'm really just looking forward to Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered.
@nhSnork
Hefty? £50 for a whole year and 800 games hefty? Well, £35 given the recent sale. Also, PS Plus is also something for people “with time to play at home”.
But yes, sorry if there are a small percentage of owners who can’t access PS Now, but it is still relevant for the majority (unless you consider China an open explored market I guess) Maybe acknowledge us?
They could’ve done much better especially with these selections! I actually was hoping for a Resident Evil remastered version for Plus and MediEvil! But not this! But it now really doesn’t matter because I just won The Remastered version of MediEvil on eBay👍🏻
@thefourfoldroot not quite sure how 20 countries make up the majority of 70+ territories in PSN's country selector or how PS+, a service fully compatible with Remote Play and still featuring over a hundred Vita games in the older subscribers' libraries, is something necessitating "time to play at home".😅
@nhSnork
Who plays their PS4 remotely on a VITA? PS Now on a laptop yes, but VITA remote play? It barely functions when I’m home on the same WIFI network as my PS4! But yes, if you are talking about the past, and haven’t finished those games from years ago, then your point was valid prior to VITA games being removed.
PS Now is available to the majority of PS4 owners, not the majority of “territories” (if we discount China, which I do, as the PS4 ecosystem as we know it is not available there).
Something like call of cthulu or the sinking city would have been great. RE 2 or 3 would have knocked the ball out of the park.
I heard Vampyr was actually pretty good and I guarantee if it was NFS Heat and not Payback, a lot of people would've liked this month's lineup even more.
Racing games really aren't my thing, but I like the look of Vampyr. For the first time in MONTHS (other than Fall Guys) I can say I will actually download and play one of these games - I literally can not remember the last one other than Fall Guys, maybe Yakuza Kiwami.
Crap selection? You guys sometimes surprise me lol
Was interested in Vampyr when it came out, but never bought it because reviews were mediocre. Will definitely give that one a go, but not really interested in NfSP. So, 1 out of 2 is just about a normal month for me
@thefourfoldroot while parsecs from perfection and partly limited by control scheme hijinks in some games, Vita Remote Play is fully functional even on Belarusian H+/4G connections, and that's saying something. In my own case, it's THE reason I own PS4 at all - and my odds of PS5 ownership are looking slim precisely because so are that console's Vita support ones. Somewhat ironic that this experience sounds more awkward to you than streaming games (with the same network challenges if outside) to a suitcase with the need for a separate gamepad, but that just proves that tastes and circumstances differ.
As for native Vita games, I'm not talking the past, I'm talking backlogs hailing from the past once added during the respective months. Even my account, subbed for less than 3 years before the service stopped Vita offerings, has some 75 titles with the yellow label - and some dedicated listings account for almost 200 total since 2012. Even discounting the items hence ported and playthroughs hence moved to Switch, it's a lot of portable playtime - good for you if you're long through with it all, but not everyone is.
And if you insist on counting users rather than territories... PS+ is estimated at 41.5 million, PS Now is at 2.2 million. Sony may like to view themselves as riding on the "cloud gaming future" bandwagon, but in the present, PS Now still feels like an afterthought in the ecosystem. Which really seems to sum up the answer to the concern you voiced here about respective game lineups from the start.
Speaking of lineups, how often does PS Now rotate games? That's another point I'm skeptical towards (although welcome being corrected on if I misunderstood something) as compared to PS+. The latter leaves the game in your library and even inbetween subscription lapses as long as you were there to grab it in time (only a select few titles, mostly MP ones unusable without discontinued servers, have become dead weight). PS Now sounds more comparable to music services in that regard, where you can come back to a significantly altered or curtailed library any day.
Never gonna complain about free games, even if I'm unlikely to play them.
I've almost bought Vampyr on several occasions, so it looks like that finally payed off. Very excited to give it a try!
Good games, but when will sony stop with the whole putting games from ps now and ea play on plus...i know some people don't have either or one of them but really it should be value for everyone and not just a small group that don't, the subscriptions are there for a reason if you choose to play those games so it shouldn't come onto plus in the first place.
@nhSnork
I guess peoples experiences may vary, but on my home WiFi network, which works well for streaming on NOW, I can’t last very long on my VITA streaming from PS4. Glad you can. I would say that streaming from ps5 to whatever is compatible (hopefully VITA then phone) will be better due to the 5hz WiFi in PS5, but I don’t think that will translate to Remote Play bring better outside of the home. I think I’ll default to taking my laptop away and streaming Now next gen.
I agree Now seems an afterthought currently and the focus is on Plus, not denying that at all, but Now will never grow at all if they keep adding the NOW games to plus. It’s an awful situation for what is an otherwise great Now service.
Regarding games leaving and added: at least 4 added a month, the vast majority kept on the platform. Sometimes a big name game comes on, and you will have either 3 months or 6 months before they leave.
@Dodoo they have paid so little that they don't get to complain that much
You get what you pay for.
@naruball haha well while I agree, that’s up to them!
Absolutely no interest at all. Even free, with no other new games out that I want to play, I won't give these my time.
last decent need 4 speed was the ps2 era. vampire its ok but the controls are clunky.
found the vita streaming terrible still do i use a lap top now 100%perfect. with all the wireless sruff i have the vita is the only one i have a problem with, original also 3G and the slim.
My problem is that Vampyr is already on PS Now. They devalue these games when they put them on multiple subscriptions like this.
Firstly I am really happy they are 2 different GENRES. I was really tired of two sims, or 2 shooters, or 2 platformers at the same month. It was self-defeating. And secondly I don't have Vampyr, so YEAH!
@thefourfoldroot yeah thats seem to me to. Now when rl is free i cancel my ps+, nothing worth to me anymore.
@SwankyPaladin ok boomer
I was really looking forward to actual horror games like maybe The Evil Within 2 or resident evil revelations 2, anything that is actually horror for this Halloween why a boring racing game can we atlest get 2 horror games plz or is it too late😞😣😭
@Dodoo its free because the point of ps plus is to play online and get cloud saves, they could just not give anything at all - and its $5 bucks a month, what kind of blockbuster games are you expecting?
@zupertramp if you pay for psplus for the 2 extra games you are definitely doing it wrong - that is why they are free - cause who tf is getting ps+ for 2 giveaway games - you pay for ps+ to get online multiplayer and cloud saves anything else is extra meaning free
Didn't realize NFS was so poorly regarded. I'll give it a try, though. Vampire anything doesn't interest me. I'm sick of vampire/zombie/werewolf things. Been done too much.
If Vampyr had reviewed better I'd be all over that, but alas it seems like a bit of a stinker so another quiet month for me.
@thefourfoldroot let's see you get to buy and keep vampyr instead of paying PlayStation now
@Taylorzombie
Not sure what you mean. Regardless, I wouldn’t keep a single player narrative based game once I’ve finished it.
@Hazadokun you pay for all the service provides.
@zupertramp I pay to play online and get cloud saves, the games are free it’s a bonus they have zero obligation to give me any game - stop being a whiny bitch about free games
@Hazadokun You're paying for a service that includes games among a list of other features. Your personal preferences in regards to those features is irrelevant. You're paying for all of it.
Any distinctions to the contrary exist only in your mind.
Same as always I already own them both, sony I'm so tempted to ***** off to xbox. Give us loyal customers who own pretty much all ur games, a game to choose for said value of both titles ur giving away. Bought vampyr when it was ten quid And already played need for speed, all of them and the new one is trash. Sony need to get a grip ASAP. As for godfall it looks like a god of war rip off. More I see it the less impressed I am. If it wasn't for demon souls I wouldn't care about next gen.
@zupertramp I promise you no one who is an adult about things is paying for the 2 free games, you really have to be a privileged little ***** to be so upset about the offerings of 2 free games a month and expecting the “best games ever“ to be on there 😂 but anyways have a good day o guess
I may not even get around to adding the FREE games to my library.
@zupertramp Any distinctions to the contrary don't exist only in his mind. They exist in a lot of people's minds. While I don't disagree that from a technical sense, you're paying for the entirety of the service, but every item added increases the value of the services and effectively decreases the cost of everything under the umbrella of the service.
And for most people, they were willing to pay their yearly fee for PS+ before it had many or any added games. So even when mediocre games are added, it's free value added to a product that isn't increasing in price.
So, yes. It's not strictly accurate that anything else is free, but it is true that anything added is a cumulative extra being added on top of a set fee. Even services like Netflix don't really have cumulative extra. Their library of quality titles hasn't really grown over the last 5 years, it has just shifted to different content, but many of the other shows end up leaving the service. No title you ever add to your account leaves PS+.
@Deltath So it used to be you just paid for the games then they tacked on online play and so now suddenly the games (which were something like 5 titles a month at one point but now number a whopping two) are free offerings? I've not even mentioned the price increases along the way.
Look, you're all welcome to move the goalposts wherever you want them but the games aren't free. Cheap maybe. A good value maybe. But free? No.
I will say I do envy the blissful outlook though.
I'll be getting them, NFS mainly just to play online with my bestie if possible. Vampyr I'vebeen curious about for a while but it might collect digital dust for a while, I'm still trying to get to finish Ghost of Tsushima and recently started replaying the Ezio collection... And pre-ordered 3 games and my schedule doesn't give me a lot of time to play.
Tonmake a long story short,I'm not super happy but I'll be ok (◍•ᴗ•◍)
@Hazadokun I’m not expecting any blockbuster games. I think you either missed my point or are putting words in my mouth.
To be honest I'm really excited for need for speed especially since it's going to be on the PS5 and I'm going to get both the games for free on the PS5.
@thefourfoldroot PS now is like Gamefly was.....a rip-off. Cloud gaming is a money scheme and nothing more. The inherent, UNFIXABLE, latency it adds to the gaming experience means it will never be a viable gaming option. Those that choose to waste their money one it are worse than those that buy microtransactions, by light-years.
@ChipBoundary
Never spent on micro transactions in my life!
Streaming is ok for many games, JRPGs, turn based strategy, sim, but I’d never use it for a racing or fighting game for the reason you mentioned.
99% of the time on Now I play downloaded games though. There are hundreds of PS4 games to download for £35-50 a year. That’s fantastic value in my book.
Personally i think if they swapped nfs with a horror game hell amnesia would be ideal since rebirth is right around the corner but they goofed it and that's the big sad
@Flaming_Kaiser Understandably
@SwankyPaladin that's just an excuse. I get that you guys enjoy defending a corporation that barely cares you exist but like the Nintendo diehards I could never do that myself.
The games aren't free. I pay for them. Multiplayer is what you're not actually paying for because most of it's not even handled by Sony.
If you haven't played Vampyr, its worth giving it a try. I enjoyed it. Its a decent AA game that offers something different. I don't have PS+, Only play Sony games on PS these days, But games like this always seemed a good fit for PS+ to me. Offering games everyone already has made little sense to me.
I really feel like most people don't even give Vampyr a second glance given that on first glance it does look a lot like your stereotypical buggy game. But that's the thing, it's not really buggy at all. It's actually a really good game if you give it a chance. I feel like I'm dolling out the same "graphics aren't everything" argument by saying this, but it's actually true in this case. Yeah the game might not have the best graphics out there, but what it does have is a very enthralling story and a deep narrative. I think the only thing I really would have asked for in this game would have been for it to be more of an RPG where you could make your own Vampire and do a few more things than just the couple of side activities and story that it allows you to do. Overall, i believe this game is definitely worth being excited(or at least interested) about. Even if it is just to ride everyone over until Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 comes out.
@TheAnnoyingFan meant to say TIDE everyone over.
@thefourfoldroot because PS Now isn't available everywhere? You sound like a spoiled child.
@J-Roc
And yet it is available for the majority of people, so perhaps you should acknowledge that other people have a right to their experience without insulting them. Just a thought.
I'm not downloading anything anymore. I'm saving my space for the next huge update from Modern Warfare. Damn game gets deleted every month to make space and I got a 2tb hard drive
Vampyr looks like a ps3 game so i never bothered buying it even on a sale. Kinda like that game with the werewolf hunters that sony made forgot the title. Havent had a worthwhile ps plus game because every time id buy a game during a ps sale the same game would get added to ps plus a few months later. Like whats the point in buying games. If i can just wait a month or two and get it for free. Id rather have sony have bigger discounts on the digital store than get bad games for free.
50-80% discounts would make me go full digital over physical purchases. The only other reason i dont go digital is because I got banned last time and i lost $5000 worth of digital games for my potty mouth. Physical games for me i guess cause i know sony cant steal em from me.
@thefourfoldroot ok
@lordzand you don't pay for the games. You pay for the service. The games are a bonus.
@Flaming_Kaiser no one knows how to be grateful. I dont think they learned manners.
@Dodoo but the games are free. What are you paying for? The games or the service? My answer is the service. The games are a bonus.
@SwankyPaladin I still believe that people believe that they should get new games for €60 a year its kinda baffling.
@SwankyPaladin I pay for the service and the games. Then I pay for continued access to the games. It's really simple really. If they were free I wouldn't have to pay to continue to use them.
