There wasn't an audience this time around, but hype master Geoff Keighley still managed to put on Gamescom Opening Night Live to keep us all satisfied when it comes to gaming updates and announcements. That's an impressive feat in the current climate, but given the nature of the show, what sort of treats did he have in his goodie basket this time around? We got a lot of good looks at both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart debuted an extended gameplay demo, Little Nightmares II joined the party with a debut look, and Fall Guys revealed its second season of content. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was also a part of the show while Mafia: Definitive Edition gave us another glimpse of the remake treatment. One brand new game announcement included Unknown 9: Awakening. For a round up of everything announced, click here.
However, as always, we want to know what you made of the show. Did Gamescom Opening Night Live deliver or was it all a bit overhyped? Place your vote in our poll and share your full thoughts in the comments below.

That just... sucked. Like really? Bridge Constructor? Why?
That joke pointed at Last of Us 2 rage at the end. HOH boy...🤣 That threw me, but there were some cool things shown!
I thought it was ok. Nothing special at all and alot of these games we have already seen in detail. Even though Ratchet and Clank looks brilliant, we saw this same gameplay run on the original announcement.
so what was the mystery ps5 game? could not have been ratchet and clank since we knew that game was gonna be there.
did they forget?
Cheers Push Square.
Loved Geoff throwing shade at Abby, Insomniac weren't keen on touching that one.
For me Crash, R&C with release window, Fall Guys and Star Wars Squadrons were the best bits. It was really a show about updates then brand new announcements.
@Broosh I was honestly wondering if that was a joke towards the TLOU2 lol
Watched it on IGN. Literally the only thing that was interesting was R&C, and during the stream that ran at about 3fps and had no audio.
So that was 2 hours of my life I'm never getting back.
The coolest thing i saw was my phone being able to play Xbox games. Now i know i can play Avowed for 15$ when it comes out lol.
Was really disappointed at the titles shown, but I’m glad for those that saw something they were excited for!
@jdv95 It was confirmed to be Ratchet & Clank.
@jdv95 They said in the preview it was R&C, it's the guy when they recorded it wasn't told what it was.
also the rewards where uhm weird.
non of those games are out yet,and they never said the awards where for most anticipated games so yeah it seems that was just tacked on there at the last minute.
It was a 4. Would have been a 3 except Sam & Max was a legitimate cool surprise.
Thought it was OK. Some great things in there for me but I'd say 75% of the 2 hours was lackluster. Not as big as I thought it was going to be but that's OK!
I thought it was a bit dull. Only things I liked the look of were 12 minutes, Lego Star Wars, and R&C.
Also, what was going on with the awards? I didn't get what they were being judged on? Were they just giving awards to the trailers that they liked the most??
@Broosh what did he say?
Incredibly disappointing I think this is the worse show I have watched live. I didn’t have high expectations to start either but these updates on games we heard of just showed stuff I’d already seen.
It really should never have been a 2 hour show. I don’t understand what the awards thing was about at all, The dragon age and wow section took up so much time to say nothing. Saying every 5 minutes ratchet and clank and fall guys later in show just got tiresome.
I did like look Lego Star Wars I feel I had to say something good about it and I hadn’t seen that. Anything else new I’d forgotten about already or can’t play as it not on ps.
i wasn't very good EXCEPT for ratchet......that was a homerun - and to hear from the devs that it'll make the launch window.......fantastic news
Bloody terrible. Total waste of two hours.
A thoroughly boring two hours. Little Nightmares 2, 12 Minutes and Ratchet and Clank were the only things that grabbed my attention.
@NDL08 he just asked if the new lombax was called abby for ***** and giggles.
but let's not turn this into another TLOU 2 topic.
That was pretty boring tbh, two hours of boredom.
Awful. So very, very awful.
@jenny_jones I imagine it's like the E3 awards, like best at show and all that.
Great show I like to see someone talking more than a disembodied voice.
Unknown 9
Sam & Max
Outriders
Little Nightmares II
WWE Battle Grounds
Star Wars Squadrons
Lego Star Wars
Chorvs
Ratchet & Clank
All have my attention.
The voices in medal of honor were laughable, it was like listening to an episode of allo allo. Graphic quality was pretty poor too.
Ratchet was the star of the show but I was annoyed I had to wait til the end to see it but I should've known that. If you look up 'Meh' in the dictionary it just says 'Godfall'.
That horror game by an indie looked excellent but I can't remember what it's called.
Overall I thought it was below average.
Apart from a few good games shown it was a bit rubbish especially that WoW thing. It did end in spectacular fashion though.
@jdv95 i'm not sure what you're talking about? i just googled "mystery ps5 game to be at gamescom" and nothing comes up. what source was claiming this?
2 hours of dross + ratchet and clank. i really i wish i had a dimension rift to go back to 7pm and tell myself not to bother my ar*e wasteing two hours i'll not get back.
@ApostateMage -yea, that WoW thing was awful.
@eddie429 kyle the guy at the pre show with the hair band.
but as it turns out he was not aware that ratchet and clank was gonna be there so he refered to that game as the "mystery ps5 game".
Tried to watch it but it kept skipping. Was gonna watch it now, but shan't bother now and just watch the trailers that sound interesting.
R&C looks more and more like a big mess or rather chaos. It is hard to keep watching, how about playing... It looks like fastened episode of Robot Chicken.
And how the hell did cyberpunk win best ps game? I mean really? Wtf! Last 2 and ghost are out and well received but a game no one's played that's not available wins. That's beyond extracting the urine.
Terrible show - a lot of extremely boring looking titles!
Wasn't that strong a show, unfortunately, but I think a big part of the problem was the length. There was just a lot of dead air between trailers and interviews — this didn't need to be two hours. If it was condensed and only showed the key stuff, I think it would've come off better, but there we are.
@Dan_ozzzy189 As same as Fifa 2021 is released in 2020..😂 😂 😂
It was the worst event I've ever seen in my life. Not because of the games, but because of their trailers with their blink-and-you'll-miss-it gameplay shots.
The biggest disappointment was Turrican. I expected a new game, not an anthology which can barely be considered a remaster.
And Tell me Why the best X-Box game of the year? Seriously?
@jdv95 - oh! you had me wondering because i didn't hear about anything other than ratchet - and thrilled about it making the launch window.
It was ok. Highlights were Ratchet & Clank, Crash 4 and Mafia.
Sam & Max ouuu yeeeeeahhhh!!! 😂
it is VR game Noooooooo 😠😠😠ðŸ˜
@B-I-G-DEVIL Wow is one of the top best games ever made. Blizzard was just far to slow at adding new content.
i don't know if the segments of those "industry people" talking about gaming future where needed either. maybe 1 sure but 3? nah. that was pure filler.
atleast the red bull ads where like 2 seconds each
Not much to see. Preferred the last State of Play more.
GOD that was BORING :-/ Where are the NEXT-GEN GAMES!?!?!? Apart from R&C there seemed to be nothing really. Seemed like a boring Xbox/PC like show to.
@JohnKarnes not knocking the game just by that point I was pretty tired of how dull and slow the show was and this announcement just added to it more for me personally.
Honestly felt it should just been YouTube trailer like the Overwatch stories not slammed into middle of 2 hour stream taking up 5-10mins or whatever it was.
It was very meh
@B-I-G-DEVIL I agree it felt out of place to a mostly console game show. It would have been more relevant if it was coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X. I dropped World of Warcraft after 8 years of mostly playing just it in late 2013. I jumped on PS4 at launch. I missed my gaming life of experiences in a wide variety of games before WOW.
TURRICAN. That and it includes the Amiga versions! That's about all I was interested in. R&C looks good, still not sold on getting a PS5 though.
It was ok therefore good.
Always good to have long gaming events. Cheer up
Nothing really caught my attention here. Expect for Ratchet and Clank but that’s it.
I rate it good for the ratchet & clank ps5 alone. I though that bastion game is bastion 2 from the maker of transistor, I'm really excited for it before it's revealed it just a wow expansion lol.
It was rather poor. I was intrigued by Star Wars: Squadron(s?), and thought Little Nightmares II looked interesting (but I also thought that about the first game until the reviews dropped). But now I’m a bit worried about one of the few PS5 games I’ve been interested in, Ratchet & Clank. While technical impressive, won’t the gameplay mechanic get rather confusing and tedious after a short time?
Boring show to watch. Ratchet & Clank save the show a bit.
Didn't watch it and just saw the trailers afterwards, Ratchet and Clank looks incredible though
Thing is all this year needs for me is new consoles and CP77. And sorting out this covid problem wouldn't hurt
@nessisonett This was my highlight too. I had to Google who Hello Giant were to see what the new Sam and Max could be like. I loved the old LucasArts Adventure and the old (very old by their standards) Telltale ones too.
Terrible event, only highlights for me were R&C and Skywalker Saga.
The two things I got really hyped for in Sam And Max and Medal of Honour turned out to be just boring VR games (I don't get the hype, only one I've actually enjoyed was HL Alyx)
Crash, Cod and Slogfall had terrible showings, either too short or too boring.
Godfall looks like a dumpster fire with how unconfident the Devs seem in their own product, so that's another one to avoid at launch.
Those intermission segments where they asked "gamers" questions bored me to tears, and don't get me started on this whole vague nonsense regarding "PS5 Launch WINDOW", that could literally be between 1 day and 1.5 years for crying out loud. Such poor communication.
Overall the show gets a 3/10.
No disrespect to the devs, but the vast majority of these games are the type that fade out of memory instantly and get in the bargain bin within a couple of months.
"And the award for best action game goes to Watch Dogs Legion!" Wait, what? Is this an awards show? Watch Dogs wasn't even shown, and no one has played it yet . . .
Ratchet and Clank looked pretty cool. I loved the Topiary Sprinkler weapon! But that gameplay demo had a lot of overlap with what we've already seen.
I didn't watch the show but i got some interesting games to be considered.
1. Ratchet & Clank : A Rift Apart (of course)
2. Override 2 (But it will have both PS4 and PS5 version)
Definitely not worth waking up at 3:50am for but Keighley did at least try to manage our expectations going into it. Would have liked a little surprise after the ratchet and clank demo to end on an exciting note
I just watched a couple of the highlights. It was way too long. But Little Nightmares 2 and Ratchet and Clank look incredible. I can't wait to play them.
There are a few games I'm excited for but as a whole the show was pretty dull.
Far too much time spent revealing practically nothing about most of the games
I don’t like to be negative but that was extremely boring.
It sucked a lot.
Mostly useless, highlights for me were Lego Skywalker Saga, Ratchet & Clank and Sam & Max.
The show's presentation was excellent considering the circumstances.
The content itself was pretty ok, but you can't fault the show for a lack of content if it's simply not available.
I wouldn't mind if we get more like this show, where all games are being presented, instead of the 30 something singular developer based livestreams we've got until now.
My ideal situation would be 1 big Nintendo/XBOX/PlayStation conference and for everything else one big show hosted by Geoff Keighley.
I thought it was pretty poor to be honest. A couple of games I'm interested in but it was such a chore to get through and there was nothing exciting going on at all. If this is the "highlight" of the summer then bring back E3.
A lot of filler crap.
Dragon Age was the only thing interesting, and even that was a disaster and disinteresting.
The ratchet and clank footage we'd seen before with an extra bit at the start. Wow. And little nightmares 2. Literally the only things I gave a toss about. So many battle royale crap and live service tosh. No thanks Geoff.
Little Nightmares 2 and Fall Guys season 2 were literally the only things I cared about. Out of a 2 hour show.
Yeah It was pretty bad
Very good! I'm looking forward to the following games.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Unknown 9: Awakening
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Little Nightmares II
Scarlet Nexus
Crash Bandicoot 4
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
Star Wars: Squadrons
Mafia: Definitive Edition
DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part One
Sam & Max: This Time It's Virtual
@wiiware - and the news that R&C makes the ps5 launch window!
