If even the likes of Ty the Tasmanian Tiger can make a return in the year 2020, then sure, we wouldn't say no to a remake of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos. This classic 3D platformer, which released on the PlayStation 1, is one of those titles that certain pockets of gamers have far too much nostalgia for, but then we suppose most titles from the bygone era resonated with someone. Anyway, while it's not a project in any kind of active development, the former CEO of the now-shuttered studio Argonaut Games has said that he would like to remake Croc.
Taking to Twitter, and rather bizarrely responding to a tweet from all the way back in August 2019, Jez San said: "One day I'd like to remake it. I get inbound all the time from folks that want to do it."
So, will it ever happen? Who knows, but there has never been a better time than right now. Remakes of classic 3D platformers are in demand and we're sure Croc: Legend of the Gobbos could sell a few copies here and there. A Kickstarter, perhaps? That would certainly get funded, but we'll have to wait and see for now.
Do you want to see the return of Croc? Rescue those Gobbos in the comments below.

Would buy and play it in a heartbeat.
Nah. Who would want this...
YES PLEASE. I actually mentioned this game the other day...I want a remake so badly! Loved it as a kid
I'd take a remake, not one to one like some have recently but more like Resident Evil 2 to improve upon the gameplay as I feel this is where some recent attempts have fallen down
They would need to rejigger some things to update it and improve the platforming. I would kill for this remake. Heck, I'd love a Croc 3
"This classic 3D platformer, which released on the PlayStation 1, is one of those titles that certain pockets of gamers have far too much nostalgia for", a bit harsh. You can't have too much nostalgia for something. I know it's not the best 3D platformer, but I got this for Christmas the same year as FFVII, and it was a nice little platformer to play in between. I still have fond memories of that year, and good memories of Croc. People however may remember it as better than it is, but that doesn't kill the nostalgia! Also, Croc 2 is a massive improvement, so would be nice to see a double pack.
I quite liked this one back in the day. One of the few 3D platformers I can stand actually.
@Wraggadam Double pack seconded!
Nostalgia is a funny thing, I played these games back in the day and enjoyed them thoroughly but I cannot say that the Croc series is one I think about very often. I remember the games being quite clunky and already a little dated, even back then and I don't think the same level of popularity and esteem for Croc exists as there is for other series from the period like Crash or Spyro.
I would love a remake of this. I spent so much time playing Croc when i was a kid.
This would be cool. I say take it to Kickstarter. You can almost guarantee this would get funded.
Wern't these guys originally hoping to work on Mario 64? Pretty sure they made prototypes and then when Nintendo went their own route Argonaut made Croc. I think Yoshi was the playable character and they changed that into Croc.
@kyleforrester87 I think that was just a separate game starring Yoshi. But yeah, they turned it into crocodile and made Croc.
Wasn't it also a PS1 exclusive because that ordeal? Or was that something else?
@Octane sounds like a croc of sh*t to me.
And what a great game it was! The age of mascot platformers was amazing.
I was playing this at the same time as Banjo Kazooie. Similar one back on PS1 which was great was Rugrats in Reptarland (don't judge it was good).
I'm so glad that Crash, Spyro and MediEvil are back showing that there is still a place for such games, mainly from old farts like me who loved them back then.
There are still too many PS1 gems I'd love to see brought back. Such as,
Dino Crisis,
Nightmare Creatures,
Star Wars Jedi Power Battles,
Metal Gear Solid,
Spider-Man 2 Enter Electro,
Guantlet Legends,
007 Tomorrow Never Dies,
Casper,
Tomb Raider (all of em)
I know mentioning some of these games in an article about Croc is irrelevant but remembering the PS1 brings out my inner child and memories of some of the best games I ever played.
I'm glad Oddworld is still around. And Jim Ryan thinks we don't want to play old games
If the PS5 had the ability to play and upscale PS1 games and even add trophies I'm sure it will go down well.
@GADG3Tx87 how dare you forget tombi, legacy of kain, overboard! and bloody roar. Few random titles in there (casper!) but yes not enough people remember nightmare creatures.
Also, ker-splat!
God yes i want it
@nookie_egg
Yeah, those are just some that came to mind. The PS1 truly was legendary for the games it offered and despite the advancement of graphics, even today I consider some of them to be the very best of games.
Casper, may be a random one but it was so good. I am one of the few that still actively begs for a Dino Crisis remake.
Nightmare Creatures was scary back then but such an underated game. I still miss the original Silent Hill too, and Ready 2 Rumble Boxing.
Croc a great game 😀
Jez San's mission in life is to reply to each and every tweet he receives, currently in August 2019, he should reach the summer influx of tweets in 2020 by around Q4 2021. If he closes his Twitter account, he may get around to the Croc remake in the next decade.
@GADG3Tx87 Absolutely, the ps1 had some absolute belters. I'd like a Dino Crisis, but I think it's a bit close to the RE2/3 remakes, I can't really see how they'd differentiate it other than "this is re, but with dinosaurs".
I seem to remember I used a float through walls cheat with Casper, and never managed to do anything because of it lol.
Despite what the guy leaving the comment says, I think Activision would be a good choice. Say what you like about them, but the Crash and Spyro remakes were really well done.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first game on Saturn. I think the first question would be who own's the rights to Croc? It strikes me as a franchise that would be in some sort of legal limbo, wasn't it published by Fox Interactive? If so, well, things haven't turned out so well for No One Lives Forever coming back to this point...
I literally asked for this two days ago in the comments on the Ty The Tasmanian Tiger article. I have powers.
Good I liked Croc it had a lot of charm but controls were awkward and it's aged badly but I think a remake could be really cool
Who even owns the IP if the studio shuttered
YES YES YES
HOLY ****** this was the game that opened the doors at Playstation for me.
Also IT IS the first 3D platformer, not Mario 64.
Yeah! Those controls on the original are a bit too clunky and awkward these days... Loved it as a child, though. Managed to complete it again about 7 years ago or so but would totally dig a more playable and better graphic remake.
@Sparkus Super Mario 64 was released in 1996, Croc in 1997.
Jumping Flash predates them both being released in 1995.
@Igon_Ovabord I know, but Croc was basically Mario 64 beta and truly feels like a 3d platformer that influenced future games unlike Jumping Flash, also it released later than Mario 64 but was surely made before it!
@kyleforrester87 It was originally pitched to nintendo as a 3D Yoshi platformer, but Nintendo rejected it so they turned it into Croc
