Pretty much every game ever has sequences and story beats that have to be left on the cutting room floor and The Last of Us: Part II is no different. Speaking with Kinda Funny's Greg Miller as part of the We Have Cool Friends video series, Laura Bailey describes one such scene that didn't make it into the final game. The voice actor for Abby says that it was a sequence steeped in connections back to the Fireflies.
Bailey says: "Originally in some of the flashback sequences, you were going to see Abby going to the Wolves from the Fireflies. It was never a conscious choice to go to the Wolves, she was at that point an orphan -- she was only 15 I think when everything happened. That was where she was sent and was taken under the reign of Isaac. Isaac was a Firefly and a friend of her father so that's why she went there. That's why they have the relationship that they do is because he kind of became that fatherly figure to her."
It is unclear whether or not these narrative details made it into the final game as Isaac is never confirmed to be a former Firefly in The Last of Us: Part II. Still, this is an interesting look behind the curtain at what could have been a possible story beat for the Naughty Dog sequel. Would you like to have experienced this scrapped flashback scene in The Last of Us: Part II? Let us know in the comments below.

Very cool hearing more of Abby's back story that we didn't get to see in game. The flashbacks are some of my favorite parts of these games.
Abby is a fantastic character in my opinion and in some ways i prefer her to Ellie, Laura Bailey as ever gave a fantastic performance.
Amazing. I love when in books they dedicate some chapters to flesh out the "antagonist". They are not just undeveloped punching bags.
Made it to what I think is the very end last night... was 2AM - so stop playing once I walked down. That initial scene with her was striking. All I thought was, Put me back in her shoes I can get her (them) out of this 😔
Fantastic game. I'll play anything that will extend either story line.
Brilliant game, at first I wasn't keen on abi's story, but it soon became very compelling and you could resonate with her actions. Ellie's vengeance and Abbie's redemption you might say. Brilliant story. Kudos to ND
I loved Abby and wouldn't mind seeing a comic or something to flesh out a bit more of her back story and what happened with the fireflies after Joel, or maybe save it for a flashback in the sequel 😉
It’s nice to have a positive comments section about Abby for once. 😂
@LiamCroft Yeah, honestly lol. I’ll admit I wanted nothing to do with Abby at first, but the more I saw of her perspective on things, the more I grew to understand why she did what she did and really started to like her character. It almost feels like Ellie’s downward spiral and Abby’s story of redemption for what she did. It’s crazy, this game is a true masterpiece.
@LiamCroft she's awesome and its a lot of fun to take out infected just with her bare hands, I'm sure she has a sweeter side too 😄
@LiamCroft I went from "ah crap, the doc should have stayed home" to 100% not caring... all she had to do was insult Abby to her face in the hallway 😂😅. WTF lady, do you even understand what was at that hospital? - Abby went superstar for those kids
Isaac is on the old Fedra wanted posters in Seattle. So I don't think he's a former firefly in lore now. He's also a bit of a monster.
Laura's a great artist and such a beautiful girl!
I actually like Abby...in addition to having a compelling story herself, it is also because Ellie doesn't feel like Ellie to me in the sequel. Being stupidly angry and hateful does that to someone.
I was not expecting to like Abby as much as I did. If her and Lev are the main protagonists of TLOU3, I wouldn’t even be mad.
@Ichiban Insecure troll detected
@KahnArtizt07 I would love for this to happen because I really want to see if it would sell. I don’t like her.
I'd have been down to find out more about Isaac. He seemed like one of the most interesting side characters
If only she died... would it have made this game a bit better.
Abby is my favourite character in the game and no, she should not have died. The fact Ellie has lost EVERYTHING, even the fingers on her hands to play guitar, I think Ellie should have died. I want part 3 to be about travelling the world with Abby and Lev.
@LiamCroft Even if I didn't like where the story went, I have nothing against Abby, just wished they didn't use her to take away what made TLOU I special for me. But even that isn't her fault, technically!
I also preferred playing as Abby more than Ellie except the very last part as Ellie. Unleashing chained up clickers on Rattlers and hiding behind a couch devilishly smug was brilliant.
@ApostateMage Hi there friend. Completely agree on that one. Those Rattlers felt like the "most evil" group out there so I had no mercy for them whatsoever. Cheers and have a good one
@skik08 Hi there friend. That could work, absolutely We could have Either Lev or Abby or both as the main protagonists in the third part and even Ellie and JJ could make an appearance(cameo) or, again, be also the main characters as well. The fact that some people actually like Abby, even if they haven´t forgave for what she did, she, just like Joel, deserves redemption. The exact same for Ellie, who just like Abby, needs to atone for their sins. The world of Last of Us is pretty messed up isn´t it? Cheers and happy gaming to us all
I think it was the right choice to leave it out. Adding that kind of connection between Isaac and Abby is a little cheap and undermines the climax of that relationship. There would need to have been an extra step to justify what happens. There was no need. We all love more story but this is best left out. Isaac should be outside that story. If not it undermines a whole other sequence too. It was a good decision.
@Severian yes Ellie was being very stubborn in the end if she actually stayed at home abby would of died anyway cause it was Ellie that freed her after all, Ellie would be able to play guitar and not lose her gf
@ApostateMage and our surprise at seeing how long the infected last once unchained and its quiet a while lol
Would love to see abby place a xbox between her biceps 💪 and crush it to pieces lol
