Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition has a new trailer that gives a decent overview of what the dungeon crawling RPG is all about. It covers character creation, combat, and co-op as the title gears up for its 27th August release date.
But the real headline here is the newly announced 'Lite' edition of the game. It'll launch alongside the full release, but it won't cost you a penny. You'll be able to make your character and take on the first three dungeons. What's more, if you join someone who owns the full game, you can help them tackle a total of 13 different dungeons. All the progress that you make in the Lite edition will carry over to the full title, should you decide to snap it up.

Hmmm. So if your buddy buys it and you have PsPlus and the lite version you'll still be able to play through most of the game?
@Jayofmaya Depends on how specific that wording is. From what I remember from when I played the original, there's a lot of overworld stuff as well as villages - and maybe what they're saying is that your friend can enter a dungeon and invite you in just to do that dungeon, like dungeon finder in WoW, kind of. But it's not that you can just free roam the game with him up to the point you've done 13 dungeons, if you see what I mean.
@Matroska Ahh, I see. Well that's still fairly decent for £/$0
@Jayofmaya Yeah it sounds like you'll be able to get a good feel for the game at least.
so it's basically a demo, still cool though, i will give it a try.
That looks like good, clean fun in all honesty - pretty sure I'll be getting this!
I somehow managed to miss this one on GameCube so I’ll definitely be checking this out.
I love the look of this game but is it possible to play it single player or not?I probably asked this question a while back but I'm still confused by what kind of game it is.
Sure, I'll try the lite version.
I don’t feel any nostalgia for this but hey I’ll try it for free! Maybe it’s better than I remember
I'm really excited to play this with some friends!
I'll pick up the freebie, although I think it will best played with friends online.
I really enjoyed what I could play on the gamecube, the graphics were great and the gameplay was unexpected having only played the mainline Final Fantasy games before that, I really liked it.
I didn't get to experience the game fully though. If I recall couch co-op was pretty much mandatory to take advantage of spell combinations and the like.
Ill try it and will get it when they release it physical. 😆
Really great idea to allow people to test the waters, firstly, but also potentially boost sales by converting would-be buyers. I'll start with the lite version, for sue, but may well end up grabbing this!
@Wazeddie22 it is, but it may feel a bit empty. Also, as far as I recall from gamecube days, stronger spells are tied to how many people are casting. So if 2 x fire is cast, you get fira, but that requires 2 people, and so on. They released a ds version where you could get ai teammates and sort of make them follow and cast spells, via a rather fiddly mechanism, but team strategy and cooperation is definitely part of the fun.
@Wazeddie22 The game is (or at least was) 100% doable solo. The gameplay mechanics are slightly different though: Solo you get a moogle to carry your chalice for you and can combine magic into more powerful versions through the menu (i.e. blizzard + blizzard = blizzara), but in multiplayer you have to cart the chalice around w/o a moogle and can't combine magic on your own. You have to cast magic in the same spot as a teammate in order to use higher level spells, with your timing + number of party members determining the strength [i.e you and up to 3 friends both cast blizzard on the same spot. 2 users normal timing = blizzara, perfect timing = blizzaga / 3 users normal timing = blizzaga, perfect timing = blizzaja (strongest version iirc)].
Some of those spells can only be used in multiplayer, but are not needed to beat the game.
Also I'm pretty sure having a phoenix down in your loadout revives you in solo play, but in multiplayer one has to be used on you by a party member.
I never played this before so will prob check out the Lite version.
@Cloud7794 @J2theEzzo Thanks so much for the detailed replys!
Having played nearly all the Final Fantasys, this sounds completely different to the others. Can't say if that's good or bad but I'll most likely be buying this to give it a chance.
@Wazeddie22 it's a light-arpg with a final fantasy finish, and emphasis more on exploration, adventure and story than combat, but still pretty fun. I just hope that's reflected in the price - the fact they're releasing a free version, makes me think it will be!
@nessisonett still have my gamecube copy so it will be interesting to see what has changed in this version.
@ShogunRok Will you be reviewing the multiplayer aspect at PushSquare?
@Jayofmaya For sure, we'll try to have a review that covers everything.
@ShogunRok Was thinking of getting it anyway as I think my friend is, but I'll make sure to give it a read first
