Yakuza: Like a Dragon has a brand new English trailer, which debuted earlier today during the Xbox Series X stream. There, SEGA confirmed that the game will be available at launch on Xbox Series X, but there's been no mention of a PlayStation 5 version. It's safe to assume that backwards compatibility will let you play the PS4 version on your PS5, but it'll be a shame if it doesn't get an enhanced edition on Sony's next-gen console.
On that note, we've reached out to SEGA and we'll let you know if we hear anything back.
In the meantime, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is still set to release later this year here in the West.

I'm 100% sure they have a PS5 version, it's basically a Playstation Franchise
@AzlanWake13 Not anymore it's not. The installments have been making their way over towards Xbox/PC for the last few months now.
Makes sense for it to go multiformat, of course, but there surely can't be a money hat in place? This must be coming to PS5, right? Right?!
@Link41x But their roots are with Playstation and I'm certain they don't want to abandon their relationship with Sony
@get2sammyb they've been with Playstation since the beginning, Pretty sure they aren't gonna abandon them for next gen
Plus Japanese and Asian region players would rather buy a 4th Nintendo Switch than a Xbox Series X
At least the PS4 is a sure bet, since it's been released already.
Most likely it will work as a BC game instead of having a PS5 version.
I’m really glad it’s gone multiplat, it’s a series that fully deserves to make the big time and some of the mods on PC have been absolutely hilarious. I’m sure it’ll make its way to PS5.
It's hilarious that MS gives more a crap about Japanese games these days than Sony does. It's made more funny because back in 2017 people were holding games like Nier Automata and Yakuza over Xbox gamers' heads. 'This is what makes PlayStation better, variety. Great Western and Japanese games.' Then late 2018 and the anti-Japanese censorship policy rolled around and people on the PlayStation side have decided these games no longer matter.
At the rate these guys work it'll be Yakuza 8 on PS5 next year. Though they did cross platform (ps3/4) zero and kiwami 1 in Japan so it is possible.
@get2sammyb it will surely run on a PS5, question is if it will get any optimizations for it. MS has been spending some time in Japan courting studios, and would not be shocked if providing funding for this kind of stretch goals.
I mean, look at Final Fantasy 13, they didn’t just make it run on XBoneX, they also got higher res cut scenes from Square to prerendered stuff too, not just a emu-port. We still can’t play FF13 (or 13-2 or LR) in a sony platform unless we break out the old PS3s.
Sure, MS did the heavy lifting on that one, but that’s my point: if it’s MS either financing or doing the extra-mile work, then we might never see some of those optimizations on a PS5.
I personally hope they do, though. I like to keep my franchises in the same console, and would hate splitting my Yakuza series across PS and XB. It already is a pain I must do that for final fantasy due to 13 only running on Xbox these days, and 14+7 remake only on PS4. (I refuse to go PC)
Maybe it is only Series X as it is a spruced up version of the Xbox One version that just looks prettier and loads quicker. Maybe the lack of PS5 confirmation is due to Sony dragging their feet with showing us stuff so that they can confirm.
Nice to see Yakuza branching out.
Erm, MS are letting you all put the cart before the horse here.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be out for Xbox One, and can be played on Series X due to backward compatibility across gen.
Do not believe there is a Series X version, it's the Xbox One version running on Series X.
MS will want you to believe this is called 'Smart Delivery' but it's just the same version running on two systems.
This is why there is no PS5 version announced, because the game is current gen, already out on PS4 in Japan. Because MS want to push series X they are calling Yakuza: Like a Dragon a launch title, but it will not be a different version.
We will see more of this spin.
@Futureshark the whole point of MS announcement was to highlight games that will have optimizations (not just faster load times) on the series X. Basically, same as PS4Pro optimizations. What you are talking is akin to PS4’s boost-mode. That’s not what they were talking about.
Mind you, the only thing some of these games might get out of this is 4K/120fps and/or draw distance increases, but they will still need to be specifically coded for those optimizations.
Makes sense: the Yakuza devs get MS money then go on to sell most of their copies on PS4/PS5.
Win-win situation
@Gamer83 Where are you finding this out exactly? Because MS had a few Japanese games featured on their not so great "next-gen reveal"? Those games are likely coming to PS5. What exactly makes MS a better place to play Japanese games? All the Japanese games Sony has that aren't on Xbox? Them finally getting some games that have been exclusive to PS for ages are still on PS all the same?
They did say that Yakuza was going to focus on PS4 for the foreseeable future but I guess no one expected them to still go next gen on Xbox. Maybe they are still talking with Sony about possible PS5 plans.
To me it's a nonsensical idea that the Yakuza franchise would abandon the literal soil they built on which is Playstation
Every singleone of they're game has been released on a Playstation console, except for the mobile one of course
Surely we are going to leave this generation versions behind. Much like on PC games will just perform better and enable better options as they have more powerful hardware available. I for one hope to see games sold just as Playstation or Xbox games going forward with minimum and recommended specs.
@Tharsman I'm still holding out hope we'll get the FF13 Trilogy on PS4 or PS5, I'm a very patient gamer.
Same for a God of War Collection on PS4/PS5, Dead Space/Mass Effect etc.
Been reading this is a launch day title on xbox series x so they must be releasing on ps5.
@KidBoruto I just wish Sony had at least the same level of interest in backwards compatibility as MS does. They didn’t just remaster the FF13 trilogy for the XBOne, you can just insert your old disks and go to town without additional purchases!
I had to re-purchase GTA3 for like the third time (PS2/3/4) to be able to play it again, because of course they are all separate purchase items.
@Tharsman Xbox One definitely has that going for them, along with GamePass and a 4K UHD player.
