Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 has to be classed as one of this year's best feel-good announcements, and better yet, you won't have to fork out any extra cash beyond the game's RRP of $39.99. That's because this is a budget-friendly release which won't feature any microtransactions at launch.
In an interview with GameSpot, Vicarious Visions boss Jen Oneal said that the remake won't include any additional purchases when it releases on 4th September 2020. "Everything that you see at launch is going to be unlocked with gameplay. We're not planning on having monetization at launch." GameSpot states that if there is a demand for extra content further down the road, the team may reconsider this approach. Vicarious Visions doesn't explicitly say that payment would take the form of microtransactions, however. This could simply be a paid expansion, so we'll have to see what happens.
Elsewhere, Oneal hinted at the possibility of cross-play. Falling short of actually confirming the feature, he says: "When the time comes we will say more." It sounds like one for the future, then. Not planned at launch?
So you are going to pull a Crash Team Racing and add them in after the games have reviewed?
Why?
Of course it won't have them at launch. Gotta let people review it first, then slip in the microtransactions once the reviews have been published.
It's pretty disgusting that this needs to be clarified in the first place.
Something similar was said about Crash Team Racing, and that game got microtransactions further down the line.
🤦🏻♂️ only monetization id really accept would be more courses. Maybe from thps3 or classic levels from other games.
I suppose they could chuck in some cosmetic items after release that i can ignore
I wish they wouldn't pull this though. Just be honest. If you want to monetise the game, id rather you be up front about what that does and does not mean, and what we can expect down the line. Gamers will be more accepting if companies are honest and dont hide behind shady practices like this
this is a game that i WANT microtransactions for.
I want to buy more skaters - I want to be cookie monster out there skating around.
they should add a battle royal mode - whoever can't keep their score high enough gets booted.
"At launch" being the optimum words.
If the paid DLC is a THPS 3 + 4 expansion, count me in!
Hate it when devs cut content at launch. No microtransactions, no purchase.
@MJF I like this idea!
@MS7000 well due them being a bunch of greedy (insert french word of choice here)
This is how you'll get the missing 5 tracks from the original soundtrack lol
I mean, if they support it like they supported Crash Team Racing, I'd be okay with some kind of additional revenue stream.
The game already HAS monetesiation... It's called game sales. What people should start saying is "additional monetization".
Becoming quite common this bait and switch practice and is used by devs and publishers to avoid a slew of 'problems' for them.
You don't like it? Don't buy it then. If you complain then go on to buy it, then well...
@get2sammyb If I was to review Crash Team Racing now, I’d give it an extra 2 (out of 10) points on top of the original score. The support they have given it post launch has been amazing.
"at launch"
that does NOT bode well, not when Activision are involved
We all know that the addition of "...at launch" means they will be added later, if enough people buy the game to make it worth milking them.
If nothing else, they could at least be fecking honest about it.
Maybe if people started saying "well, you'll get no money from me at launch, I'll buy it in 6 months when I see what crap you're planning to shoehorn in later."
If they can do it like CTR where you have to participate in stuff to get more stuff, and then more stuff becomes available (decks, levels from 3, later skaters etc), wont be an issue at all. They give double exp on weekends and whatever, maybe you have to score a certain amount on a weekly generated skate park from the create a park mode...
Or just release a load of skins, decks and levels and charge a bit extra for a bundle.
Either way, this is all standard these days unfortunately.
If it's extra skins and courses later on down the road, I'm fine with that. What I'm not fine with is that terrible Fortnite style shop they added to Crash Team Racing to encourage regular spending by having items that rotate out. Being that this is Activision, and I'm anticipating the worst.
Key word here is at launch. Once the review are all out though you bet your ass they’re gonna make you pay $5 every time you wanna do an Olly trae flip.
So I'm not buying the game then.
If you want to make a cash-in F2P, don't charge me to play it.
And if you want to have a premium game, have the cosmetics be earned through gameplay, like Ghost of Tsushima.
I mean, it sounds like everything you'd expect to be there will be there day one, so anything brought in via microtransactions is extra. I don't really see the issue unless it gates off important stuff.
oh dear, how disappointing 😥😥
Depends what they add really before we can criticise or not.
With it being a remake, you'd imagine at least all the original content from the first 2 games will be there day one. Then if they wanna add more areas or stuff then I'm fine with that.
Proper DLC where they brought out new levels every few months would be awesome and I'd happily pay for it.
They're coming in the future "surprise features" DLC pack expansion! Due to "overwhelming demand" (by Bobby Kotick)!!
"Won't have microtransactions at launch" Neither did Crash team racing but we saw how that turned out.
It'll probably be like CTR and Modern Warfare Remastered where microtransactions are added post-launch.
@Quintumply Do you realise how ridiculous you sound talking sense on the internet? Haha.
As long as both base games are there with skaters and boards i dont give a stuff about MT's. I wont need to buy anything to play both games and enjoy them as they were. I wo t be buying these for competing online anyway. Buying cosmetics like skins etc to make things look cool has never interested me anyway.
Vicarious Visions is owned by Activision for a start so you know it would include them at some point. And by Activision's past rubbish release the game for a modest price without MTs and LBs then add them in via a game update unexpectedly
I saw the interview Geoff Keighley did with Tony Hawk and Vicarious Visions' Jenn Oneal. I want to support the game because everybody on board seems to have a passion for this project but Activision is the publisher. Like with EA, SquareEnix Ubisoft and Bethesda, a wait and see approach has to be taken when Activision is involved. I hope it turns out well because these are legendary games and I loved playing the first one on Dreamcast but I could also see things getting ugly in the lead up to launch.
The fact that they are wording it this way means they are already planning it. They just want to lure people into thinking it wont be there.
At launch...... at launch.... at launch..........
@kyleforrester87 Well due to Activision and how they manage the CoD games, it's not the Developers who are adding the microtransactions. You can also find Devs from (I think IW) who discuss on this.
