Final Fantasy VII Remake has proven to be a hit in Japan. The latest estimated sales numbers from Famitsu are in, and the long awaited remake tops the software charts by some distance. What's more, the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake has resulted in a sales spike for the PlayStation 4 itself. The console's been selling quite poorly in Japan for a while now, but it managed a decent 79,000 units last week.
Back to Final Fantasy VII Remake, the game has sold an impressive 703,000 physical copies. For context, Final Fantasy XV sold around 690,000 copies at launch, so Cloud and the gang are doing well so far. It's also worth keeping in mind that the ongoing coronavirus situation may have had some impact on physical distribution, and it's not hard to imagine that many players will have opted to buy the digital version instead. As such, it's reasonably safe to assume that the game's sales numbers will be much higher when taking digital copies into account.

good news because i want this to succeed because there are other FF games i would love to see remade (or get sequels)
@FullbringIchigo it's Already a success because it catch 3th record of Most-Downloaded PS4 exclusives in 3 days on PSN (after Spider-man and GOW)
@FullbringIchigo FFIX Remake !! Coming in 2042 ^^
@parvaz1 you know i would love to get a look at the total sales numbers
@Cornaboyzzz honestly, joke release date not withstanding that would be an amazing game to remake
@FullbringIchigo it's my favorite game of all time so yeah, that would be amazing
@Cornaboyzzz i love FFIX although honestly the one i would love to see remade next is FFVIII even if it used the same basic battle system as FFVII Remake they could expand it so much, perhaps they could even have SeeD jobs you can do, kind of like the hunts in FFXII for example
Deserves it.
Best game to come out this year so far, and one of the best games I've played this generation.
7 years in and PS4 selling 3rd party games like crazy.
Nice for SE. Not played it but everyone at work says it is fantastic.
I'm not surprised, it's a really great game, if this game has 100 hour full story like the original it will become my favorite game ever, but now it's only my top 3 favorite ps4 games along with tlou remaster 😃
Also I think ff7 remaster battle system should be the standard of final fantasy battle system going forward, it's soo good and stylish with all the abilities, spells, and slowmo atb.
Edit: Just play the first motorcycle section, man this game delivers. Also jessie is adorable 😀
Yep well deserved, the amount of work that has gone into this game is staggering when you think about it.
I'm on chapter 7 and it's been really enjoyable so far. Aeris is a sweetie.
@FullbringIchigo that would be great !! Let's hope
@DonJorginho I love it too but have you finished it yet? I did last night and, though I hate to say it, the ending is atrocious. Both the gameplay and story elements. The rest is amazing but I'll always find it hard to motivate myself to finish it again, I'll just play through most of it and stop.
@DonJorginho @Matroska i thought the ending was perfectly fine if a little confusing at first but once i thought about it and talked it through with my mate (who is also a huge FF fan) then it made sense
i'm not going to post here because you know spoilers but to me it makes sense and i liked it
@Matroska and @FullbringIchigo I've completed it almost twice now and have about 68 hours played as of right now.
I loved the ending actually but only after accepting it would not be the same story I fell in love with as a kid.
Am I pissed off with SE for not making it clear that it was a reimagining and not a remake? Yes but I rather enjoyed the fact that what's coming up won't be predictable due to the fact we're in uncharted territories.
Do I have faith in Nomura to make this work and not **** up the story like KH? Eh not much.
But I will be open and give the next game a try, I'll only step off the hype train if the story takes a steep nosedive.
I loved most of the story changes, only thing I hated was the whispers.
@DonJorginho well the thing is it's not just Nomura doing it this time, he has many of the original FFVII staff including the writer so i don't think we will get another KH3 situation
@FullbringIchigo that's the part that gives me faith.
I am a big fan of the ending though, made sense mostly and made me hyped for the unknown journey ahead.
@DonJorginho i think that's why so many are having an issue with it because it's opened up everything so nothing we know about the original FFVII is relevant anymore, at least in this version
still that's what a remake is
@FullbringIchigo @DonJorginho It's kind of the opposite, though, as it brings up the original as an alternate timeline then makes the plot about actively trying to avoid that. They even have you fight 3 enemies that very may well be the original versions of Cloud, Tifa and Barret, from endgame FFVII, trying to stop the remake versions from changing the story. If they'd simply just told a different version of the story I'd be okay with that. It's this weird meta thing where they acknowledge the original game as a bad timeline, then the new plot is about avoiding that. They even have Aeris point out they're not the same characters anymore ("if we go through there, we won't be the same anymore" because they're changing their future and thus the events that make them who they are). That really bothers me.
@Matroska I feel the 3 arbiters you're talking about are definitely the OG trio, and for me the Whispers are the OG fans. Not wanting the game changed that they once adored so much. It's as meta as it gets and is downright Nomura firing shots at the fanbase saying this is our story now and you're gonna accept it.But I actually appreciate that they had the balls to do it and it was downright genius and very meta even for Nomura. It doesn't annoy me as it's obvious this is a very different story and will not be the same as the OG but I've replaced the original so many times I'm not against something new. As long as it doesn't become Kingdom Hearts then I'll be happy personally
it's a legend , icon and one of the japanese national rpg in japan, another one is dragon quest. so i am not surprised in it. as you all known, ff7 is most popular in all of ff series. also maybe 80% of japanese bought it for Tifa....
@DonJorginho @Matroska you know maybe it just me but that is not how i interpreted it they were fighting against fate itself, fate or the planet was using the whispers and was trying to stop them leaving Midgar (hence why they always showed up to make sure certain things happened) because that wasn't their destiny but instead of accepting that they fought against it and pushed through, every time they beat fate (one of those 3 harbingers) then as Red XIII put it, they got a glimpse of tomorrow which isn't anything new but is in fact what we know as the original outcome, the death of Aerith, Sephiroth summoning meteor etc, etc, those events were never meant to happen but now because they fought fate and won so they could go and beat Sephiroth they have a new destiny which is the events of the original game and i think Aerith might know she is going to die to save the planet now but i don't think the others do, that's why she was so sad
the we wont be the same anymore line doesn't mean they wont become who we know they will it means they WILL become who we know them to be but they were never meant to be that if that makes sense
@FullbringIchigo Thing is the three Whispers are said to be "warriors from the future who have travelled back on time to preserve the future that made them who they are". So they're trying to stop you because the changes you make will stop them from being who they are. When they show you these flashes of Aeris dying, and if Red XIII running along in the original ending, someone says "What are we seeing?" and Red says "What will happen if we fail here". So it's not just Aeris' death but even things like Red running with his cubs and seeing Midgar covered with nature.
So if we fail, FFVII on PS1 takes place. The three Whispers are trying to make us fail because they need those events to happen to be who they are. It says in their description that one fights with a sword, one with fists, and one with guns. You're fighting them with Cloud, Tifa and Barret at this point. It's REALLY implying that these future warriors are those three characters, as Red says the OG events are what happens if the remake characters fail, and sword, fists and guns guys want OG FFVII events to happen as it makes them who they are. It's hard to see it any other way. I do hope it's all an accidental implication but it's just so strong.
@Cornaboyzzz @FullbringIchigo Agreed, I would definitely appreciate remakes of FF8 and FF9!
At some point I expect them to still re-release the FF13 Trilogy as a Remaster Bundle on PS4 though.
