There will always be more pressing concerns when it comes to the Coronavirus epidemic, but one of the aspects the virus will impact most in the video game industry is release dates. Those Who Remain, from indie publisher Wired Productions, has already been delayed, and we expect more PlayStation 4 titles will follow in the near future. That puts us in a situation where The Last of Us: Part II could be pushed back once more, however, according to Sony at least, it hasn't run into any problems just yet.
In a new statement issued on the official Sony website, the company said: "Although no issues have emerged so far, Sony is carefully monitoring the risk of delays in production schedules for game software titles at both its first-party studios and partner studios, primarily in Europe and the U.S." It also doesn't expect the Coronavirus to have a material impact on the business for this current fiscal year.
It's certainly positive news that the hardware manufacturer hasn't run into any issues at the time of writing, but we're not quite as rosy. With Naughty Dog employees working from home following the controversial allegations of sustained crunch at the studio, we struggle to see how the upcoming PS4 exclusive can launch in just two months' time. Ghost of Tsushima has a bit more breathing room while Final Fantasy VII Remake has already gone gold, meaning those two titles are in much stronger positions. We do worry for The Last of Us: Part II, however.
Do you think any of the upcoming PS4 exclusives will be delayed? Make your prediction in the comments below.

Happy to wait no issues, waited this long what's a few more months gonna do, if I'm that desperate I'll just buy on the psn store
Even if it's delay it had no impact on me as I will be pretty much occupied by p5r, re3 remake and ff7 which I'm pretty sure can last me for 2 months or so.
Well of course it's possible but no news is good news so far.
' the controversial allegations of sustained crunch at the studio'
Stop it with that though. Wont cry about their 'crunching'
I would not Call TLOU being in danger yet.
Sure they work from home but who's to say that most of the work is not done yet? So far there has been no signs of a delay despite Sony's silence on the game.
If there is a delay so be it.untill than let's not come to early conclusions.
With their current stance on 'exclusives' I'd monitor the risk of 'exclusives' in general.
I wish they would stop with the porting and just use the games to promote PSNow which keeps them in the PlayStation ecosystem.
@JJ2 Just because you don't care about developers being worked through to the bone, doesn't mean nobody else does. We will continue to cover crunch when it is relevant.
I would imagine that the last of us is very near being gold and it’s just polishing that they are doing. I don’t mind if it’s delayed but it will have a knock on effect because ghost of Tsushima will have to be delayed too. I would prefer ghost to be delayed as it will give it a bit more breathing room from the last of us.
Hopefully tlou2 won't get delayed, want it on disc but if not possible will just pick it up on store defo day one 4 me. Wouldn't think that it will be delayed tbh think it's pretty much done by now. But don't want Nd to put staff at risk either so am willing to wait, it's just that I really want to play it, whatever I play these days I just can't get into it, just got tlou2 in the back of my mind lol.
@LiamCroft
Its just I see way worse working conditions every day in these days and time, you know.
@LiamCroft It would certainly be interesting to know what affect working from home has on the amount of effort the developer required to achieve the same result.
Is it harder because of lack of specialised equipment and difficulty contacting colleagues or is it easier because of the lack of commute and lack of distractions.
I'm okay with it, gave me breathing room to finish other games, just bought assassin creed odyssey, farcry 4, and farcry 5 since it's discounted on uplay, and plan to buy and finish persona 5 royal and ff7 remastered.
I am swimming in games right now.
That is the amazing thing with PS4. 3rd party support is so strong that SONY can take their time... tons of New stuff to play.
@LiamCroft Poor developer's in their comfortable office spaces, with their bonuses, high wages and health insurance all wrapped for them.
They know what they sign up for, and they get paid well for quite a reasonable crunch. At the end of the day they're sitting on a office chair Infront of a monitor, that's nowhere near as brutal as other jobs like being a nurse or doctor, especially in such a time as this. Let alone all the other public sector jobs that make developing look like a walk in the park.
I feel no sympathy for developers as there are much more important issues in gaming let alone the world that deserve our attention and care.
Yeah it sucks that they work insane hours, but with all the bonuses and the fact they work in a cushty office space, makes me not feel very sympathetic.
Millions of people have much harder jobs and harder lives for me to feel sorry for, than for me to care about some highly paid Devs.
Why don't you all cover the fact that all technology including game consoles are being made by Ughur Muslims who are imprisoned by China? The fact they are literally worked to the bone just to have a meal at night. Then repeat the same thing every day, being driven out to these factories in the middle of the night and being forced to work on the consoles.
All whilst all the big tech manufacturers including our Japanese giant know all about it, you never seem to cover that, but no let's talk about developers and crunch for the hundredth time as it brings you easy clicks.
Let's cool it in here, please, and stay on topic. Thanks
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk Rather than delay Ghosts if it's close to done I think they switch Ghosts and TLOU2 release dates. Maybe not the exact dates, but the order almost certainly.
@LiamCroft Good use of TLOU2 pic. Whether it's finished or not I think they'll delay TLOU2 if at the end of May we have a worst case 1-2m dead from COVID-19 in the US. I don't know the numbers but things could be pretty bad for the UK as well. Italy may just ban it outright.
@GADG3Tx87 Depends on what you're referring to. Horizon had what, 3 years before being ported? With the sequel almost certainly on its way there's no issue with that. If you're referring to Death Stranding or FF7, we've known for too long they weren't exclusives. As far as I know, their stance on exclusives remains intact even with the most recent PR statement. They know that's the only reason to buy a console, and how pro-consumer exclusives are, the model will be fine.
Just be glad they aren't going 3rd party like Microsoft and making their next gen box factually irrelevant.
@JJ2 for real, its heavier a shovel than a pencil used to say my dad, or something like that...
@DonJorginho nailed it
@GoblinKing86
I'm referring to actual exclusives, not timed or third party but their own first party line. I get that done games are s few years old but it still runs me the wrong way and it truly feels like the platform is less special as a result.
As I stated I think they should just put them on PSNow which is on PC as opposed to full pots, atleast then they're still technically exclusive. Having them fully ported to another platform, which Steam is means they are not exclusive anymore, despite their age these games make PlayStation special.
@JJ2 That doesn't justify it though. The fact that people are murdered doesn't mean we should stop caring or trying to prevent people from getting beat up. The fact that people get beat up doesn't mean we should stop doing anything or caring about bullying.
@Jaz007
Ha I was depressed and it's my personal thoughts.
I typed a long answer but deleted it haha.
Just,...man...I feel this is not the right time for that sort of Kotaku type article discussion and fake 'drama'.
Respect for the devs....👍
Now to say ND is some sort of awful place to work ....excuse me., 🙄 back to reality.
TLOU 2 as a PS5 launch title is a great ideal to me.
The last of us 2 hopefully won't be delayed because I doubt they have much work left to do on the game. It was originally meant to come out in February so they have to be close to done now the one more likely to be delayed is ghost of tsushima
@DonJorginho I agree plus once the game is out they are probably given very long holidays to reward them for the hardwork they put in. None of them are being forced they could leave if they weren't happy with the work conditions. But for most they probably want to crunch in the buildup as why would they want to see a game they have worked on for years fail
