Sony's PlayStation 5 presentation yesterday might have been incredibly dry, full of technical jargon that the vast majority watching didn't have a clue about. However, one of the few things you could really pick up on is how much of a game-changer the next-gen console's SSD truly is. It might only have 825GB of internal storage, but the folks over at Digital Foundry have taken to Twitter to explain how much better it is when compared to any traditional hard drive. That includes how much of an impact it'll have on game development and how much better PS5 exclusives could be in the future.
John Linneman explained how titles from PlayStation's line-up of first-party studios will find things so much better on PS5. "Sure, only first party games will truly utilize those speeds but multiplatform games are still going to be made with SSD in mind. I mean, we went from 50-100MB/s last gen to 2.4GB/s (X) and 5.5GB/s (PS5). That's a MASSIVE leap."
Sony's next system already represents a gigantic step over the PlayStation 4, but with the console more than doubling the clock speed of the Xbox Series X, the future looks incredibly bright for PS5 exclusives. The proof will be in the pudding, of course, and we excitedly await Sony's full reveal of what its next machine has to offer. It might only be packing 10.28 Teraflops of GPU power, but the PS5 appears to more than make up for that in other areas. Could load times be a thing of the past? We'll have to wait and see.

Like i expected and said before,lower TF but faster (way faster) SSD than the series x.
Shame that people only look at TF count to say which is best...
But I rather have faster loading times than better resolution. I mean graphics are already approaching it's maximum capacity in some cases anyway. Besides Sony studios always are able to squeeze out better visuals on it's top exclusives than the series x,so it's not even a loss for our exclusives.
Third party will look better on the series x... but that's already the case with the one x vs the pro. And I'm not missing out on anything.
So yeah SSD is more important next gen. which DF also seem to think since they only talk about the massive SSD of the ps5 and not the "big" TF advantage of the series x.

SSD sounds insane but there are alot of concerns of overheating although cerny did say you will be happy with the choice of cooling so I'm interested to see what they have done, the PS5 will be closer to 9TF and its quite clear to see it was over clocked to bridge some gap to XSX but at the of the day Sony have the exclusives and studios which have a proven track record of making Incredible games aswell as taking risks with new ideas the xbox will be the more powerful console but I bet Sony exclusives will still look as good or better than anything xbox studios can produce because of the incredible talent Sony has working for them
So for simple folk like me, does this mean that loading GTA Online up will no longer take about a week?
@ApostateMage well gta online' servers are just horrible.
so uhm no?
yep, some idiots complaining about the 825 GB size, but you'll be able to download games much much faster and won't have to rely on downloading all you games at once just in case
Sounds great!
@Arugula isn't just load times, it's actually loading data into the real time game, up from 50 Mbps to 5gbps, watch the full presentation
@mini_piekarnik
Games are set to get larger.
You are not taking into account that the download speed will only be determined by the internet connection if we are talking patches and digital purchases.
That 825GB could easily become 700GB if a reasonable chunk of that is used up by mandatory system space (updates, UI etc)
If the SSD is 1TB and will be reduced to 825GB then the problem is not as bad, but it is nowhere near ideal.
Sony should ship with a 1.5TB - 2TB Model, as the SSDs used are not on the market and will cost insane amounts of money.
@DonJorginho Shipping with an even bigger SSD is also going to hike the price of that PS5 model up dramatically.
@LiamCroft That is why I said you offer multiple models.
One for £400-450, the other for 450-500.
@jdv95 That is the entire point of releasing multiple models.
Like the PS4 had 500GB and 1TB.
If Cerny reveals that the PS5 is actually shipping with a 1TB SSD but only 825 GB is usable then okay I can accept that, but the fact that it could be really a 650-700 GB SSD with the rest being used for system software really leaves me in the lurch.
@DonJorginho A PS5 model with a 2TB SSD, for example, is going to have a much bigger price jump than £50. These aren't traditional hard drives, they cost a lot more to manufacture than what the PS4 is packing.

I feel like Sony is taking a very...Nintendo approach this generation by focus a lot on proprietary hardware capabilities. It's not a bad thing, but multi-platform games won't take the best advantage of the hardware. It's very "exclusive content" focused - which is very Nintendo.
Multi-platform games will still benefit with the faster storage speeds of both systems, but will be more tailored to the slower of the two (Seres X). Of course, exclusives will sing with the new technology.
The 3D Audio thing still worries me. I hope that the system itself still supports at least Dolby Digital Plus or else your Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney+, etc. will ONLY get stereo audio. I would really like it if the system supported Atmos bitstreaming since Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, and Disney+ all support it. I think it will be neat for games (despite the fact I don't like that high-end surround sound is an afterthought), but apps and legacy games could be affected by this switch.
Also, I just don't see multi-platform developers taking full advantage of it.
Playing physical movies could suffer, too.
Mark Cerny's message with 3D Audio almost sounded like your choices are to use the virtualized surround or simply output in stereo. That bothered me.
@Arugula It's about more than load times.
Sounds great! Lately I've been just picking up my switch more often than the dualshock since it's just way faster to get into a game and that really matters with the little gaming time I have.
Yup, the difference between playing the divisions 2 on pc with hdd and ssd is quite visible, from 60 fps with stutter mostly when I pan the camera around to smooth 60 fps with ssd. And that's with 3rd party games with normal ssd, can't wait to play ps5 exclusive with this nvme ssd 😃
'Only first party games will truly utilize those'
Emphasis on truly. Multiplat also will be boosted by the SSD speed, just not fully use all its potential.
@jdv95
1.8 TF for 2x speed. Yea, easy trade.
@Ssimsim
'the PS5 will be closer to 9TF '
I dont know where people get that from. It's pure fantasy. Cerny said 10.3 tf most of the time.
So series x is 2.4gb a second and PS5 is 5.5gb a second. Sounds like we are talking about the difference of 1-2 second load in times compared to a 1 or half a second. I did like the example of jak that Cerny gave with the corridors and level design shaped around loading in the next environment.Game designers have used dialogue to cover up load times also, just what ever it takes to not break immersion. Im excited to see how games utilize ssd in consoles but game designers have gotten very good at covering up loading (a lot of time to the games benefit with the case of exposition and character expansion) and im not sure how much of a difference there will be between the two pieces of hardware.
SONY have done this all wrong so far They should of said in January(and not mention the PS5 at all last year to) that they would reveal the PS5 in say March/April or May when they had the Console and Controller ready(well the look of it) and showed a few PS5 Exclusives and PS5 UI running and then everyone would of been excited and happy I bet. But it just seems allover the place really and done in a non-exciting way so far :-/ + of course the internet will LOVE this TFLOP story because they have been dying to hate on SONY since Microsoft messed up with the Xbox ONE Oh well maybe next time we might see something that you can actually see
@mini_piekarnik idiots? Dude I have a 1TB ps4 pro with a 4 (FOUR) tb external hd and it's always FULL and I constantly have to delete games to buy new ones. So imagine with 800 gb LUL of space...what is Sony thinking? And let's hope the games won't be double the size next gen cause Modern Warfare already has a massive size...
It's not being idiotic it's complaining about something obvious.
All these specs won't mean a thing till we see an open world game side by side on both systems. Boot up is nice to be fast, but loading assets mid game with no pop in or stutter may be avoided with the systems bandwidth bump and ssd speed together.
Will we be able to download games to an external HDD, then transfer them over to the internal SSD drive as needed? 825GB is small. My PS4 has around 7TB of data stored on it and the external. And how much of that 825GB is going to be reserved for the system? It's typically around 8-9%. Is that the case here?
@Ssimsim a lot of concerns of overheating? There only people concerned are xbox trolls and those who are uninformed And buying into the fake panic. Mark said the cooling system will be on display in the coming future. The clock speed isn't variable because if over heating, its variable because it doesn't have to run max speed all the time.
@lacerz 7tb..
You need to learn to delete things.
@AFCC I see your point but at least it's better then Microsoft solouion, yeah they have a 1 TB already but I belive only seagate would be able to produce them (remember what happened to Vita?) where as Sony solution, you'll be able to buy from third partys.
Also, do you acutally play all your games at the same time? I have Pro plus a 4tb HD and that's full as well but I hardly play most games.
It's nice to switch on the fly but I honestly stick to a few games at a time so it won't be a bother to have only 175gb of a difference. Seems like people are making it a bigger deal then it really is.
Again, just giving my two cents on this topic.
I give up, people want better looking stats and giant useless hard drives over actual performance, never mind
@jdv95
The graphic will be better because of the ssd speed since. It can keep up with more polygon at once and the AI. Will greatly improve to..
@RawnDawn of course I don't play all the games, not even half, but I like to have a bunch of them installed, in particular when having VR and someone visits I like to have all games available
"Dry"? What the hell, this was one of the most amazing presentations I've watched - full of deep dives into why PS5 isn't just same old PC hardware on a different box. My preorder is already in...
