A really nifty thing about the PlayStation 5’s SSD hard drive is that it could actually result in smaller game sizes, thus reducing the footprint of titles in its 825GB storage space. The way games are designed now, many assets are replicated dozens of times over in order to enable them to be drawn into the scene quicker using slower standard HDDs.
However, because the PS5’s SSD is so fast, this kind of shortcut may become a thing of the past. According to an old GDC presentation, around 10GB of Marvel’s Spider-Man’s overall file size could be attributed to duplicated assets and objects, so that’s a big overall saving if this technique is rendered obsolete.
Of course, it’s worth remembering that next-gen titles are likely to utilise higher quality assets overall, which could mean that they retain a very large hard drive footprint despite the aforementioned optimisations. As a result, file sizes could very well remain high – there’s just a strong chance they’ll be more efficient with it.

will it also end the day one patch and we get finished games on release too?
PS5 start in production on June(original schedule as Aug), made in japan, at least from the beginning, the coronavirus shake everything up, expect an extremely tight supply when ps5 launch.
How does this apply to current PS4 games that can be played on the PS5?
@WanderingBullet it doesn't
I still ask myself how the witcher 3 plus all dlc, only took 33 gb of the harddrive.
I hope more games will save storage size for next-gen since ssd storage is way more expensive compared to hdd, especially nvme pcie 4.0 ssd. Heck, normal 2tb sata ssd (samsung evo 860) is nearly the same price as ps4 pro.
Fortunately some games engine are more ready for next-gen, I heard doom eternal while graphically superior to doom 2016, has less storage requiement compared to doom 2016 (about 30gb vs about 70gb).
Something I pointed it a few months back when people where talking about game file size's,also the way the SSD is set up will help reduce bugs.
@TheBuzz
Now, let's not be greedy. 😂
I dont think game sizes with shrink because of this one bit. And anything less than at least 1TB is kind of a bummer. Even if they manage to keep games out and around the 50-60 GB range like now (for the most part) we are still filling storage up quickly. They say its expensive but what isnthe difference in paying for an upgrade later or just having it upfront?
Developers are just going to find other ways to use more storage space.
The fact that the physical disks that games ship on will be 100 GB implies that the average game isn’t about to get smaller. Obviously not all games fill their disks today but a lots of developers do go right up to the 50 GB and they will probably now be going right up the 100 GB.
While i still think there should be options for more space (we'll probably get a 2-3 tb ps5 at some point) this is good. I remember that console speed was a strategy Sony had talked about in the past and it was obviously one of their main features. However, i don't know if games will indeed end up becoming quicker and faster in the long run. Some of them will, especially in the beginning of the next gen cycle, but iirc there were devs (and maybe a sony figure too, i can't recall) that explained that that would be the case if the production of games remain the same as this gen. If they choose to up the scales, we'll get more impressive stuff but won't be quick.
@TheBuzz heh... since internet has come to our houses, there is no chance we get complete, polished and flawless games. Those times unfortunately ended with DOS (or Windows 3.11).
@Ryall Many games today are nothing more than a redirect to a downloader. Defeating the point of the physical media in the first place.
@RayNick The speed referenced was boot speed and install speed. A ssd writes fast enough to install as it downloads, cutting the necessary time in half.
The removal of redundant assets is long overdue. Thats likely to save more space than the extra 10% compression. But a 1tb ssd is still small, considering I have a 2tb ssd in my ps4 pro and yet only a fraction of the games I've played in recent months. (Stating its 812mb, while true, ignores that thats whats typically sold as a 1tb drive after the OS partition.)
The SSD solution of PS5 is starting to make sense as to why Mark Cerny made a console for being so developer friendly. This must be the reason why developers are praising for PS5 is to make their job more efficient, this could result to more third-party exclusive games on PS5.
The Call of Duty free multiplayer is 100GB for 1 or 2 maps. I believe game sizes are heading towards the 200GB range. Maybe the new grand theft auto game will be 1 Terabyte.
@wiiware yeah that's with full dlc though. Eternal hasn't got three dlc packs yet. So it will be get bigger buy end of the year.
@louieverr It could possibly result in 3rd party exclusives. I know there will be some devs that will want try the capabilities of the SSD fully without having to compromise for any other platforms.
But one thing I think is for sure is first-party devs on PS5 all seem excited to fully test this SSD to its limits.
@Nyne11Tyme the price of the storage will drop later on! That the point. Eventually. Right now 2 tb
2tb nvme ssd with the speed of the ps5. Is probably 300 💵 at least...
@Ridwaano your right. It still is frustrating that this will be the equivalent of this gens 500gb hdd.
@Ridwaano Actually I don’t believe there is a current SSD on the market that is capable of matching the PS5’s. But Cerny said they will be out in the future by the time PS5 is out hopefully. I think they will be very expensive at first if they are PS5 compatible.
@DeepSpace5D
Yeah there is not yet
It's cutting edge technology!, so it will be expensive so I think 800 Gb is fine just install and delete
@Nyne11Tyme just install and delete remember everything is faster 😊
@Bobskie77 I really hope sony force partial install on publishers so all ps5 games have it, I remember early ps4 games have partial install where you can install only the single player or multiplayer, but the feature is rarely used.
Most of the bloat comes from multiplayer portion I think, I hope with ps5 users can save storage with installing only the single player portion, then after finishing it, only the multiplayer portion.
Will it really makes games smaller though? Because higher and higher resolutions take up more and more space. And frankly, in recent years it has seemed that developers aren't even interested in optimizing their games anymore. They'll just shovel us a 120GB game because they know people'll buy it anyway.
I hope game sizes are reduced drastically, because that 825gb is gonna run out quickly. Im talking 'Sekiro' like file sizes, which if i remembered correctly is only like 12gb which is insane
So basically you contradict your whole article right at the end.
@WanderingBullet It doesn't.
For a physical disc game a developer would have to create a patch that recodes the game to remove the duplicate assets and tell the game how to use just the original assets. As a result the entire thing would have to be copied to the drive which would result in a larger installation than prior.
For a digital release, the developer would have to recode the whole game and release it I. the store as a PS5 version only as it would not work on a PS5. Then you run into the problem of do they charge for it or offer it free with validation that you own the PS4 version.
@tristanfey Thanks, man.
