This year's Game Developers Conference, or GDC, was due to take place this week, but concerns about the coronavirus outbreak put the entire event on ice. As with many large gatherings, it was outright cancelled, with the promise of a similar event later in 2020. In place of the original GDC, the organisers have just announced GDC Summer.
This new, three-day event will take place from 4th to 6th August 2020 in San Francisco. It's billed to be a "celebration of the art, craft and business of game development". As far as we can tell, this will be essentially the same as the traditional GDC event, but condensed to three days instead of five. The same industry-level talks and presentations will still take place, in addition to an expo show floor on the latter two days.
"GDC Summer will give the game development community a chance to come together in a way that hasn’t currently been possible due to COVID-19," reads the statement. "Safety remains the GDC organizers’ paramount concern and the GDC team will continue to monitor the latest information from health officials to ensure a safe and compelling event for everyone at GDC Summer, GDC 2021 and beyond."
It's great to see the return of this event after what has been a very gloomy time. We will of course bring you any news from GDC Summer in August. Are you pleased to see the return of GDC? Wash your hands in the comments below.

I hope Mark Cerny will make another PS5 presentation-speech about ears!
We want that 3D audio to caress our ears...
Great. Here's what I want from GDC:
A PS5 Console presentation
A Sonic 30th anniversary game and a Sonic adventure 1&2 remake
Rayman M remastered with both Dark Globox and Globette
A new Power Rangers open world game based on the 3 seasons of Mighty Morphing Power Rangers.
The Simpsons Hit and run remastered
A new South Park game
A new Family Guy game
Mortal Kombat 12
@scottdevine48 well at least your not asking for much! 😜
@ellsworth004 Do u agree with all the things I want?
@scottdevine48
Well you want something there already exists. I want new IP. Something we have not seen!. Nothing that already there.
@ellsworth004 what do I want on my wish list?
I honestly would be very surprised if this whole situation has gone by August. I do hope that is true though.
@scottdevine48 i was just joking with ya, but yes all them things would be nice. Especially simpsons hit and run, i loved that game.
@ellsworth004 So what do I want for my GDC wishlist?
@SaucyBrotato It's definitely not gonna last as long as pessimists think it will. With all the measures taken in North America, I think we're looking at 2-3 months top before our lives go back to normal. It took 4 months for China and they took forever to start taking precautions.
Also, this virus will never completely go away. It's part of this world now just like the influenza. It's new right now, but eventually, we'll understand it better and it won't be a big deal anymore.
@GigaGaia wasn't it just in one place in China? In the US, it's in multiple major urban areas. Far harder to control when it's so wide spread.
August is optimistic imo but I'm. No doctor or policy maker!
