GDC Summer 2020

This year's Game Developers Conference, or GDC, was due to take place this week, but concerns about the coronavirus outbreak put the entire event on ice. As with many large gatherings, it was outright cancelled, with the promise of a similar event later in 2020. In place of the original GDC, the organisers have just announced GDC Summer.

This new, three-day event will take place from 4th to 6th August 2020 in San Francisco. It's billed to be a "celebration of the art, craft and business of game development". As far as we can tell, this will be essentially the same as the traditional GDC event, but condensed to three days instead of five. The same industry-level talks and presentations will still take place, in addition to an expo show floor on the latter two days.

"GDC Summer will give the game development community a chance to come together in a way that hasn’t currently been possible due to COVID-19," reads the statement. "Safety remains the GDC organizers’ paramount concern and the GDC team will continue to monitor the latest information from health officials to ensure a safe and compelling event for everyone at GDC Summer, GDC 2021 and beyond."

It's great to see the return of this event after what has been a very gloomy time. We will of course bring you any news from GDC Summer in August. Are you pleased to see the return of GDC? Wash your hands in the comments below.
