As if Naughty Dog needed another claim to fame. Review database Metacritic has published its lists for the best entertainment of 2019 and of the decade, as voted for by its users. Resident Evil 2 -- the PlayStation 4 remake, that is -- was crowned the best video game of 2019, falling in line with our own Game of the Year staff vote here on Push Square.
As for Game of the Decade, it's The Last of Us that walked away with the most mentions, beating out The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (second place) and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (third place) by some distance. The blockbuster PlayStation exclusive first hit the PS3 all the way back in 2013 before it was ported to PS4 as The Last of Us Remastered in 2014.
Here's the full top ten, if you're curious:
Metacritic's Top 10 Games of the Decade
- The Last of Us (PS3/PS4)
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)

Here's my top 3 games of the decade:
The Witcher 3
The Witcher 3 Hearts Of Stone
The Witcher 3 Blood & Wine.
@ApostateMage Almost wish I'd posted this.
God of war and grand theft auto 5 for the win.word up son
Dragon age inquisition.dragon dogma.dishonored.ni no kuni.uncharted 4.dead space.metal gear 4.resistance fall of man.rathet and clank.infamous 2 etc are some of the best game ever .thats a word Up son
Playstation also has the most exclusives in the top 10. Word up son.
The Last of Bruhs.
TLOU, The Witcher 3, Skyrim, and God Of War. 4 of the reasons why PS4 is my favorite generation.
Not really the list I would put out but then again I’m still holding out and just not playing TLOU. I’ll get round to it but I’ve avoided it for years despite many friends badgering me to play it. Eh, I have about 12 games on the go and not enough time in the world so maybe one day 😂
Spiderman, that is all
Of all games, they pick The Last of Us? I would’ve picked Mass Effect 2, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, maybe the Witcher 3 or Dark Souls, but The Last of Us? It’s not even all what it’s made out to be. I guess people like movies more than games.
Disappointing that HZD never made top 10.
@Akurusu one of those are ya?! 🤡
Oh boy, there is going to be a lot of salt over this.
Bloodborne is the greatest game of all time btw
@daveofduncan One of what? The Last of Us isn’t what it’s made out to be. There are at least three other games I would put over it any day.
@Enuo. I agree they are the best.from a underdog in 1995 to the king of gaming.word up son
Ohh boy... I saw the tweet from the MC account and the salt on the replies was epic.
A correct choice 😃
And the first comment in the tweet is, you guessed it, "it's actually not a game but a movie".
@SaikoWaifu2003, the same can be said for the legend of Zelda breath of the wild, which also take things from other games and did nothing new. But it's still an awesome game.
These are all good games. I have played 5 from this list of 10 and of those 5 GTA 5 and Skyrim would be on my top ten list. GTA 5 would also be at the top of my list of 10.
I played TLOU, but it would not be in my top 10. My top games are based on fun to play, replay value , and technical quality. TLOU, on PS3, was technically ok, interesting to play, but i have never desired a replay or the play of the dlc.
Best in it's genre maybe, best outright game of the decade? Nah.
@SaikoWaifu2003, okay? I'm also realistic and i'm not seeing hzd in the list so i don't know why you bring that game, which list did you see?
Again the almost the same can be said for the legend of zelda, almost everything it has is not new, i mean there was Skyrim, the Witcher 3, GTA v, maybe dark souls and of course assassins creed and many more before.
Have to agree with the top pick. Amazing game. Looking forward to the next chapter.
@Akurusu You know what? I respect your opinion even though your wrong.
@Kai_ Add that to the list of games I’d put over The Last of Us.
@Lobbo95 If you want real salt, look at Metacritic’s tallied game of the decade list.
Well deserved in my opinion, TLoU it's my favorite game from the PS3 generation glad to see God of War in the list, my favorite from PS4, Monster Hunter World Iceborne and Nier Automata deserved some credit too
I’ll be glad when we get far enough into the year to be done with best of lists. By definition they are subjective and I’m getting bored of opinions argued as facts.
It’s good everyone likes different things so we get more variety in what gets made.
Well I think MetaCritics is not a reference on any form. You asked.
@Akurusu Bold of you to post this on a PlayStation fan site, but I 100% agree with you.
They like cinematic experiences more than games, yes. But not quite the film buffs, either. They'd know how average of a survival movie The Last of Us would be.
@Lobbo95
I know it's annoying and not true but you got to understand some people are genuine. A few of my best friends and relatives say the same thing.
For my part I think GOW was great but the story arc was lacking and not enough 'like a movie's haha
@SaikoWaifu2003 where as Zelda can't touch Horizon Zero Dawn when it comes to the quality of its combat, visuals or story. I played and finished both and both were very great games but I prefer Horizon with Zeldas only blemishes being a mediocre story and awful main dungeons, which is a shame as some of its shrines are genuinely brilliant.
As for a personal top 10, I can't really think off hand but candidates would be The Last of Us, Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 1, God Of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Doom, Zelda Windwaker HD, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8, Astro Bot, Resident Evil 2 and 7, Cuphead and Persona 5. I'm sure there's many more oh yeah Skyrim 😂 but yeah that'll do for now
Wouldn't be in my top 10. Objectively, it's a fantastically crafted game and as deserving winner as anything that could've taken it. Subjectively, fun factor counts a lot for me and there was nothing fun about TLoU. One playthrough of that extremely dark world was more than enough but no doubt I'll be buying TLoU 2 on day one to see how the story continues.
@JJ2, maybe you're right. It just that hearing the same thing with almost every playstation 4 exclusive it gets to me. Especially in some spanish websites, don't try to say anything good about a playstation game there or you will be flamed.
Horizon's combat wasn't melee based so that's an odd observation, as I said I liked Zelda too but I wouldn't want to replay it. It's always good to diversify your gaming habits though, one of my biggest criticisms of the wider community is the lack of imagination and variety in the games that they play. Personally I play a wide variety across all 3 consoles, plus the other 12 or so consoles I own 😆
Not a bad list Played them all apart from Breath of the Wild, although still need to finish Dark Souls!
@Akurusu Dangerous words round these parts but I wholly agree with you. I found TLOU to be an insufferable interactive movie.
Bloodborne, god of war and breath of the wild for me. In no particular order...
@BearsEatBeets you might have to wait a while as this year we’ve not only got game of the year lists but game of the decade too!
No Horizon Zero Dawn? Shameful.
I'd have the last of us , uncharted the lost legacy , god of war , GTA 5 , bioshock infinite , horizon zero dawn , doom , until dawn , dying light & days gone as my top 10 of the decade & either beat saber or astrobot as top vr game
@Gamer83 Cant agree less and the ending was awsome. 😃
It starts with a punch too the gut and the chemistry between the actors was brilliant.
@carlos82 I loved the combat from Horizon Zero Dawn. Thats why i played for 30 hours in the starting area.
@Akurusu Hmmm saying your opinion is better?
I can totally understand why it got the vote its a fantastic game.
Well deserved. Don't quite understand some of these interactive movie comments. TLOU is certainly no Resident Evil. Those games really began to get boring with all their QT events.
Ok but Last of Us Pachinko when
I didn't played The Last of Us the moment it got out. So I added to my backlog.
When I finally tried it, it was already the remastered version.. I understand that maybe at the time it got out, it was something really cool, but for me it was just a nice game. Not bad, but not that good.
@Neolit Yeah I know, but he was saying there is going to be salt from that. I said if he wants salt then he should look at the gotd list because spoiler alert: The Last of Us isn’t #1.
@8itmap_k1d You’re right, but that’s the fun of it. I got tired of crouching and sneaking all the time. I haven’t touched it since I beat it.
@Flaming_Kaiser Where did I say my opinion was better?
Can't say I am particularly surprised; the list is almost boringly predictable. With the exception of Bloodborne, Dark Souls and Mass Effect 2, every other game on the list managed to sell at least 10 million (more in a couple of cases). When you look at it like that, it makes sense they would be at the top with so many people giving them high ratings. (Not saying it is not deserved; it would explain why they sold so well.)
I personally don't think The Last of Us should be at the top either; it should definitely be played at least once due to the story alone and how it is told, but gameplay wise it didn't have enough variety for me to be interested in repeat playthroughs and I also did not enjoy the ending one bit (did make for a good final level however).
Good for everyone that really liked it though. Here's hoping for more games that everybody likes.
Last of us only gets the praise it gets because of how well the voice acting was and its cut-scenes. If we judge a videogame by its core , its gameplay then Last of us does not warrant a game of the decade . LOU aiming was fairly mediocre and the A.I was broken. my biggest issue playing it was there was no variety having to constantly grab a ladder or crate to get across a water section . If someone favourite genre are cinematic story driven games then I can understand LOU being peoples GOTD.
Normally everyone on the internet is wrong but they are right with this one. AMAZING Game it was + not many(I.e ZERO) Xbox Exclusives in that List I see
@Carl-G You don’t have to bring down another company just to make a point.
The Last of Us is deifnitely one of my top games of the decade, but I'd have a hard time deciding between that, Dark Souls and Mass Effect 2 for the no.1 spot, personally.
I've thought about this Game of the Decade thing and realized it's not possible. It's not practical. It doesn't exist. However GAMES of the decade exist.
@TheArt
It's like most awards. Most gamers dont care. It's good for meta, good for internet traffic, good for promotion etc etc.
3 exclusives in the top ten. Nice.
The Last of Us is the best PlayStation exclusive I’ve ever played followed by Days Gone.
It's great but eh, no. I would put God of War and Bloodborne over it.
My fav game from Sony. Great story, gameplay, everything comes together to make a complete package imo. Having a kid myself, that opening from last of us, was very emotional. The left behind dlc was superb also. For me, Last Of Us is fully deserved as metacritics game of the decade.
@ApostateMage agreed
I don't know what y'all are talking about, Fallout 76 is the game of the decade and that's that. 10 years from now, I'll still be playing it and finding new bugs.
Would also add Uncharted 4 to do list.
But overall i think it's a good list.
I never really caught the Last of Us craze. I just hate the actual gameplay so much that I never was able to finish it. Certainly willing to accept being in the minority there though. I wish I liked it.. I really do
In all honesty, if I had to give my top 100 games of all time (starting in the Atari 2600 era for me), I seriously don’t think The Last Of Us would make the cut. Of the last decade it might just make the top 25 at best.
I've played and enjoyed six of the games on this list.
My own Top 10.
1 - Red Dead Redemption 2
2 - The Witcher 3
3 - Skyrim
4 - GTA V
5 - Horizon Zero Dawn
6 - God of War
7 - Arkham City
8 - Red Dead Redemption
9 - Uncharted 4
10 - Inside
My top 20 PS games in rough but not necessarily exact order might be something like this:
Bloodborne
MLB the Show
Driveclub
Shovel Knight
Super Mega Baseball
Everybody's Golf
Darkest Dungeon
Dark Souls
Dark Souls 2
Dark Souls 3
Nioh
God of War
Arkham City
Arkham Knight
Witcher 3
Spiderman
Motorstorm Apocalypse
Kingdoms of Amalur
Celeste
Super Meat Boy
This was a quick best attempt, but I think it's pretty accurate. I'm not certain of the last five, and for example some of the Uncharted games or maybe other titles could debatably be substitutes. I didn't include the Crash or Spyro remakes or things like Pinball Arcade or retro games, as those were re-releases (but some of those would otherwise be on the list).
The Dark Souls games could have been higher, but I vastly preferred Bloodborne and Demon's Souls (which sadly couldn't make the list, as it released in 2009).
If we were going by overall games of the decade, I'd guess about half of them would be Nintendo games.
@ApostateMage such mediocrity. I've done everything in it and am about to start the Isle of Mists quest and honestly I'm wondering what the hype and accolades were for. The game controls as bad is, if not worse than, a GTA title... Which is the absolute s*** of the industry. The graphics are stiff, the characters plasticine and wet, the VA is pretty terrible, and the lore is mildly interesting at best. I'm enjoying the game in small bites but it in no way deserves any of the praise it's gotten since release.
As for the game of the decade, well, the decade isn't over yet, we still have to finish this year out. TLoU I can see taking the crown though, as long as they're not counting that atrocious multiplayer mode. If so, the rating has to go way down. An excellent game mired by that shallow, dull mode.
Language! - Quintumply
For me the best games of the decade are
1) TLOU
2) Gran turismo 6
3) Mario galaxy 2
4) Pikmin 3
5) Resident evil 2 remake
I have yet to play Bloodborne, HZD, Days gone and lots of other games in my backlog that I can't rate yet.
I have the last of us remastered and I still haven't played it properly. I really need to get on that. I played a bit of the opening section and was wowed and for some reason got distracted and ended up playing something else.
@Nintyfan The game controls as bad as, if not worse than, a GTA title... Which is the absolute s*** of the industry. The graphics are stiff, the characters plasticine and wet, the VA is pretty terrible, and the lore is mildly interesting at best.
I can't take you seriously after spitting all that rubbish.
@Nintyfan The decade is over. It doesn't work like centuries and millenia. The tens started in 2010, and 2010-2019 is ten years. We are now in the 20s, a new decade.
I agree with you that W3 has a lot of issues, but it's still overall in my Top 20 and is one of few games where the ending has made me cry (maybe cause I'm a dad and am a sucker for father-daughter stories). It's one of the only open world games I could put up with.
We all know Anthem and Fallout 76 top the charts. They are so epically good that you have to block them out of your mind to be able to enjoy these other low quality games afterwords. That's why nobody lists them.
Not that it should top the list, but I'd prefer any Uncharted.
Witcher 3 No 1.
@Nintyfan stick to Mario Kart mate!
Horizon zero dawn is my personal game of the generation, absolute master piece in my mind and I can't wait for a sequel. Game of the decade would probably go to Arkham City.
@Nintyfan funnily enough, tlou mp is the only mp game I play and I still play it to this day, I think its fantastic.
@carlos82 I liked the main dungeons in BotW, I’d say more than anything in the game. Most shrines were good. The boss fights and really combat in general were lacking. I agree story left a lot to be desired, but that’s typical Zelda. HZD had an interesting story for sure and great combat.
No way Zelda can be better than witcher 3 in my humble opinion.
Glad to see 9 games of the list available on ps systems.
@Shigurui yes
