You can't have it all, can you? 2019 played host to numerous excellent PlayStation 4 games, all of which you can find in our set of Game of the Year features, but then some titles fall on the opposite end of the spectrum. Metacritic has put together a list of the previous year's worst-reviewed games, and it doesn't make pretty reading for PS4 with eight of the 10 experiences listed appearing on Sony's console.
The top 10 list is as follows:
- Eternity: The Last Unicorn (PS4) - 36 Metacritic rating
- Left Alive (PS4) - 37 Metacritic rating
- Blades of Time (Switch) - 38 Metacritic rating
- Contra: Rogue Corps (Switch) - 40 Metacritic rating
- Dollhouse (PS4) - 41 Metacritic rating
- WWE 2K20 (PS4) - 43 Metacritic rating
- FIFA 20: Legacy Edition (Switch) - 43 Metacritic rating
- Submersed (PS4) - 44 Metacritic rating
- Generation Zero (PS4) - 45 Metacritic rating
- Narcos: Rise of the Cartels (PC) - 46 Metacritic rating
It's probably not the list of games you'd recommend a PlayStation newcomer to pay any attention to, but we have to admit that we haven't even heard of a couple of these titles. Eternity: The Last Unicorn? Submersed? There's probably a reason they haven't been brought to our attention. We can absolutely agree with the inclusion of Left Alive, however. WWE 2K20 will down as one of the most hilarious video game launches ever, while we didn't think Contra: Rogue Corps was quite as bad as everyone was making it out to be.
Although, there is a story behind every game featured on this top 10 list. Do you agree with it? Share your ranking in the comments below.

Never went near any of those games
When you have the most opportunities for devs your going to generate some crap. This is to be expected imo. Most consoles in the wild means both ends of the spectrum are covered.
I've not even heard of a few of these but Contra absolutely deserves its place and if anything is scored too highly, that game is dreadful and has absolutely no excuse given the developer and it's own history
It seems fairly common for the same game to get a slightly lower score on PS4. Left Alive Average 40 on PC and 37 on PS4.
I suspect it simply a case of the PlayStation critics being harsher rather than the PC version being better.
@Ryall Usually more people review the PS4 build, too, which negatively affects the average.
I played a bit of a friend's copy of Contra: Rogue Corps.
I mean... it's not a particularly good game, but it's not horrendous. It's like an average, third party action title on the PS2.
Im pretty fussy when it comes to choosing a game so touch wood I don't think I've ever bought a game which I didant enjoy. The only one of those that I was kind of interested in was Generation Zero but luckily a mate had it and it looked pretty boring so didant bother.
Surprised Switch didn't have more to be honest. Nothing against the Switch, but Switch owners have been drowning in new releases as dev's rush to try and capture the burgeoning market left behind by the Vita (in the indie space at least). .
I had heard of that unicorn game from an end of year vid i watched on youtube on the weekend. It looks dire. Watching paint dry is more rewarding
Good thing I don't buy games based off metacritic or reviews.
I was really curious about left alive but it sounded downright broken, I watched a mech warp in and instantly kill a guy playing cause he was standing where it spawned.
Did Xbox Fan vote in these 😂most of them are multi platform
I have to admit that I was intrigued by Submersed. The idea of navigating a flooded offshore facility, trying to dodge ravenous sharks sounds like a solid survival horror concept on paper. Apparently the execution left a lot to be desired.
Am I the only one who really liked Left Alive?
Awww I dont think thats fair on Generation Zero, sure it was meme worthy janky on release, and I waited to buy it cos of that, but I bought in the Ps Xmas sale, and damn, its actually really good, they've done a LOT of work on it, and it shows, and my gosh it is pretty to look at it when your being chased by giant robots through snow covered mountains in the sunset
I mean, Left Alive isn't THAT bad anymore, and there are worse games than this. I'd probably give it a 5 or a 6. Though the stealth gameplay is still broken, and no amount "fan defending" will change that lol
Huh look at that... Left Alive was supposed to be Bandai Namco's own resi evil. Totally forgot about that one
More people own a PS4 than the other systems so the average score will be lower of course. When a gen ends I like to try those games that were critically panned to see if I would actually like them. Sometimes hype can hurt games too.
LOL WTF Talk about NIT PICKING... I was thinking like damn PS4 games are RATED LOW only to see that these games are from s***** small indie teams lol
Please mind the language - Quintumply
The clickbait was strong with this one.
It shows they have a large and diverse library of games on ps4 and let's be fair there are more than enough good games to never have an actual need to play any of these 😂
I’m sure there are worse games out there, as lots of games don’t even have a Metacritic score. I really miss Gamerankings.
