Have you ever stared blankly at your PlayStation 4’s dashboard, puzzled about which game to play? It’s the story of this editor’s life, as he often recklessly returns to NBA 2K20 because it’s the easiest option. Microsoft, to its credit, has come up with a solution: a new ‘Surprise Me’ button on the Xbox One dashboard will randomly select any title from your library, and suggest it as something to play.
Currently only available to those part of the system’s Insider programme – and spotted by Reddit – the button doesn’t automatically boot the random game, it just brings up a popup suggesting you play it. Alright, it’s hardly the most amazing feature in the history of console operating systems, but it could potentially solve those awful moments where you sit stumped, wondering what on Earth to play.

Surprise mechanics? I dont think that's going to be popular haha
Wonderful! I hadn't noticed that yet but it would be a great help. My One has around 500 games installed and I run into this issue all the time. It's usually easier for me to boot up COD than decide which game to play only to forget about it a week later
@Pichuka97 That's an impressive avatar, man.
Haha. I always default to NBA2K too!
I wouldn't like to add up all the time I spend just sitting at my PS4's main menu, unable to decide on what to play.
While the xbox cant compare to the playstation for 1st party titles they do have some fantastic ideas for user experience
I think if PS4 had this feature, I would let it surprise me, and then I'd just say "no", and then press Surprise Me again, and then "no". Etc. Etc. I wish I could say I would honour the surprise, but I just know I wouldn't.
Well, now I want a Kinder egg.
It’s something that I’ve wanted Netflix/Hulu to have for ages now. I’ve seen all the episodes of my favorite series, now just show me a random one to rewatch!
@Jake3103
Surprise me: minecraft ...no
.........fortnite....no
.....plant vs zombie 1.....wait that thing takes forever to download..no
...MEA.... got to call my friend and ask if he still has the disk.....no
....SWBF I . . Come on, I ve just reinstalled SWBF II
sounds like a useless feature to me haha
That's a good idea 😃
I pretty much always know what game I want to play at a given time.
I usually have that problem, staring at the tv not knowing what to play. I've just found out that I don't want to play games anymore. Incredible as it may seem... I don't even want to start playing Hitman 2. Only TLOU2 can bring back the gamer in me...
@get2sammyb you must have platinumed NBA by now the amount of time you spend on that
@get2sammyb Thank you 😉
Interesting.
Kinda helps bring up that game that's been sitting in a folder all alone up to the forefront.
I usually don't have that problem. I have a game lined up to play after I'm finished with what I'm playing now. For example, I finished The Impossible Lair and I had Indivisible lined up. Now that I'm playing Indivisible, I have MediEvil for afterwards.
This helps me finish the game that I'm currently playing since on the PS3 days I left a lot of games unfinished cause I jumped around too much.
Analysis paralysis is the scourge of modern day life. I have that whenever I finish a game and don't know what to start up.
@BarefootBowser Best comment I've read on the internet in ages mate. I couldn't agree more.
@BarefootBowser thanks for your comment mate.
Xbox owner here and I think this is pointless, for me at least anyway. I could just go to my game library tab, as I usually do, and see all the games I’ve got installed and just make my decision there and then. Other may like and use it, if so power to them.
"Have you ever stared blankly at your PlayStation 4’s dashboard, puzzled about which game to play?"
No. No I haven't.
I've got a huge backlog that won't be done by the time PS5 arrives, it's been the same story throughout the gen.
I spend too much time hunting trophies, by the time I'm done another game comes out and my backlog gets no smaller, but hey, 65 Platinums in less than 6 years...
Can't say I've ever had that problem, no. Seems like it's something which would fit well with those who buy digital because they can't be bothered to drag their butt off the sofa to change a disc, though... "Xbox, tell me what I want to play, because I can't be bothered flicking through my collection to decide for myself."
Yeesh.
pointless would just start a game & I would not want to play it! I have loads of games but I would never need my console to tell me which game to play sounds like a very odd thing to me.
@MattSilverado Sounds like you need a bit of The Outer Worlds in your gaming life.
"It's not the best choice, it's Spacer's Choice."
This would be cool seeing as I own around 400 PS4 games digitally lol.
Suprise!
Randomly selects games with new DLC just out
@GADG3Tx87
65 platinums in 6 years isn't that impressive, some people can earn more than that in less than a year.
@ApostateMage I loved New Vegas so... Maybe next month!
@Izoma @GADG3Tx87 As someone who has earned 4 platinum since 2014 it sounds pretty impressive to me.
Maybe Xbox could surprise us with some new games, that would be a start.
@Ryall
Not me, sorry I'm not a trophy hunter but I have 4x that (255 to be exact). I know others with over 400 and 600 so not that impressive.
@Izoma @Ryall.
Why thank you Ryall. I don't see many being able to get 65 in one year unless they are absolute easy games like Lego. Where as I get mine from games like Persona, Yakuza and Metal Gear solid. You'd have to get atleast five Platinums per month to do that in one year. Maybe if you've got no life whatsoever and play games, easy games, 24/7.
@GADG3Tx87
Easy games like White Knight Chronicles 2, multiple JRPG's across PS3, vita and PS4 (such as Persona 4 and 5), also Fallout series (except 76) Yakuza (including Ishin), numerous Koei Tecmo games including JP imports and so forth and so on.
You made a post attempting to brag about platinums on an article about a function on Xbox one. When someone points out that other people can earn that amount in a year, you then become defensive about the games you play compared to ones they may or may not play. The one with 600 has platted all Souls games and Ninja Gaiden games, those aren't Lego or easy games. Some people are just very good gamers, some like my mate are better than you. What they do or don't do with their life isn't really for you to judge but perhaps visiting a trophy hunter website is more appropriate for your gaming conquests.
@Izoma
Not getting defensive but considering you claim it can be done in a year which would equate to more than one per week is highly unlikely. I too have Platinumed all of the Souls and BloodBorne games btw, they're not considered 'hard' at all.
Try getting the Big Boss Extreme emblem on MGS4 which according to PS Access is the third hardest platinum to achieve.
You say you've been doing so on Vita and PS3 as well as PS4 which means that number was accumulated over the course of around 14 years.
@GADG3Tx87
Uh no the PS3 did not originally have trophy support and I didn't have a PS3 until 2011 nor did I have a vita at launch. Once again you keep making assumptions. Someone can earn 65 platinums in a year if they want to whether you want to accept that or not.
@Izoma
If you say so. But 65 in one year is quite a stretch. So you'd be getting a platinum about once every 3 days, still seems highly unlikely. Plus on one post you claim you have 255 and on another you claim 600 so which is it?
And if it is 255 as you originally claim that averages at 31 per year over 8 years since 2011 for you, not 65.
Again, I'm not getting defensive or making assumptions but the number for one year as you claim seems highly unlikely. Perhaps you have evidence then I'd believe it were possible. I don't see anyone getting one every 3 days unless the games were very easy.
Who could forget the Xbox 360's "surprise me" function when that red ring lit up.
Why not just manually search for a game instead😆
This is why i never will delete hitman 2 from my HDD it the game I always fall back on when im stuck on what to play
@GADG3Tx87
Actually earning 65 in a year isn't hard, you can earn more if you play easy games.
You can shave a year off for White Knight Chronicles 2 and another year and half for Neverwinter so that's 255 in 5 and a half years. I'm not a trophy hunter, just pointing out that bragging about platinums is silly. I pointed out I have mates that have 400 and 600+ platinums. You can keep trying to find averages but that's also silly. Some people play multiple games switching between them on different consoles. I also have Xbox and Nintendo consoles as well. I'm a gamer not a trophy hunter. I don't care if you believe me or not i know what I've earned and they weren't for your benefit.
I might actually use this function and that scares me.
Our game libraries are such an embarrassment of riches that we can’t even choose a game to play.
It’s like when I pull up Netflix and just stare at the screen, paralyzed with options.
First world problems galore.
@Th3solution @Shogunrok I know right? I've spent so much time doing that, always having a lot of unfinished games while I do that.... Man it's sad when you think about it.
