In all the excitement over yesterday's State of Play, this little detail almost got away from us. However, the all-seeing internet never forgets, and it rarely forgives. After the action packed new trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, you'll see brief mention of Survival Mode, presumably a wave-based co-op mode within the Spec Ops portion of the first person shooter. Cool, a new mode! Hang on, what does that small print say...
Yes, Survival Mode is a timed exclusive on PlayStation 4. Things like this are to be expected given Sony's relationship with the franchise, but what makes this example stand out is the duration of the exclusivity. The mode won't be playable on other systems for almost a year -- Survival Mode will go multiplatform from 1st October 2020.
Understandably, this has caused a bit of an upset. In previous Call of Duty titles, things like map packs or other DLC were exclusive to PlayStation for maybe a month at the most -- usually just a week. This takes things to a whole new level. A whole mode of the game is only on PS4 for nearly 12 months? Call of Duty 2020 will be nearing release at that point.

What a coincidence, I’m currently playing through survival mode on Modern Warfare III, and it is honestly the most fun I’ve had gaming in a while (I feel this way all the time, but still). Never thought I would say that about Call of Duty but this is the first one I have ever played.
You have to survive waves of enemies that get increasingly difficult, and you get cash for each kill, which you then spend on upgrades to make yourself strong and last until later waves. It’s a fun loop, and you get even bigger cash bonuses if you get kill streaks and headshots.
This is my experience from MW3, a 2011 game. I’m curious to see if the survival mode has evolved from then until now with this latest entry.
As far as the timed exclusivity, it is a pretty big deal that whole mode will be exclusive to PS4 for a year, and will likely pay off for Sony when it comes time to tally up the sales numbers on PS4.
These types of deals are here to stay for whoever is the console market leader at the time.
I don't understand the fuss. Get your xbox - go to Cex - trade it for a PS4. Job done.
amazing when the XBOX was getting entire games exclusive for a year eg Rise of the Tomb Raider they didn't care but now it's happening to them suddenly it's an issue
it not so much fun when the shoe is on the other foot
although i do agree a year is FAR too long especially for a CoD game as it's a yearly release, by the time the other systems get this the next one will be round the corner
it should have been 6 months at the most
@themcnoisy i wouldn't take it to CeX, those ******** are far to cheap for example you don't even get £100 for a XB1s from them
as a PS4 owner, i felt bad too... why not 1 month Exclusive? even why not 3 months?
but 1 Year??? when we know that next year we getting another COD game?
wow...
and remember because of a year Exclusive, it s not about "Xbox" either, it s about whole community like PC players!
@FullbringIchigo agree with you about tomb rider and other stuff that Xbox did, but think about COD series! its a yearly series...
and of course Sony isn't s***** as Xbox to exclusive a game that announces first as Multiplatform...

These kinds of exclusivity deals are awful. An entire year is a very long time to wait for a mode that should be available on all versions. If it was the other way around, there would be plenty of complaining here.
@parvaz1 oh i agree i said a year is too long for a CoD game, it should be 6 months at the very most
It's their game, they can do what they want. Just because players demand something they have to bow down? I get the part about keeping players happy but where do we draw the line?
I was disappointed because spec ops used to be 2-player missions, which I really enjoyed then they changed it into a horde mode I didn't care for. I was hoping for a return to the former.
@parvaz1 I had to wait enough times. I had to wait untill PS4 to play Tales of Vesperia in Europe. 😆
So excuse me if i dont feel sorry for the other console. 😉
i imagine this is probably a single mission type within the spec-ops, that maybe has one or two maps/levels at most. it won't be that substantial.. it's a bit like the exclusive strikes on destiny which were for a year.
if people on other platforms don't like it, they should vote with their wallets. the practice unfortunately won't stop til companies start feeling it. i don't buy dlc for PS4 games if it comes a month or whatever after other platforms. if everyone did the same...
This is no problem since people has the choice to sell their xbox and buy ps4.
This is epic games store exclusivity type of injustice. I'm no Xbox player, I'm getting the pc version because it's just so much fun to shoot s*** in this one with a mouse and I'm pissed that I'm getting 66% of the game. Oh and gtfo with that 99% bulls*** you f****** vultures.
I appreciate you're angry but please watch the language - Quintumply
Not a big deal, it’s just a survival mode.
When Failbox get PUBG exclusive for a year, those people didn't say anything at all.
MS shouldn't have unleashed this beast last gen!
For Xbox and PC owners it’s simple, they should just rent the game or not play it at all, that would make Activision think twice about pulling a stunt like this again but that will never happen as most of the fan base will just be casual players who won’t even care about survival mode.
@leucocyte Just my two cents, but I highly doubt Survival mode will only consist of a couple levels/maps. In MW3, there are no less than 16 Survival missions in the base game, and many more in the DLC as well.
I’m expecting the Survival mode to be very robust here for Modern Warfare, and it is a very cool mode.
@DeepSpace5D - maybe, but i am kind of expecting spec-ops to be something similar to the variety of short co-op missions similar to MW2, probably re-using a lot of the assets from the campaign. i wouldn't expect survival mode to be the major non-competitive mode. it'd be the equivalent to having the zombies mode only on PS4, not even activision is that stupid.
@leucocyte It doesn’t have to be the major non-competitive mode even if it has many maps/missions.
MW3 was the very first time that Survival mode was introduced to the series, but even then, it wasn’t the only spec ops mode.
There was Missions mode as well, which gave you 16 new missions to complete, almost like new levels in the campaign, and allowed you to collect 48 stars by completing objectives. There was 16 missions for the base game, and many more in DLC.
Then you also had a third Chaos mode that came later with one of the DLC packs and had it where you had unlimited ammo and an endless wave of enemies.
I will say though that when survival mode came out in MW3, from what I read people loved it, so I can understand why people buying on PC or Xbox would be upset. I didn’t know it was such a fan-favorite mode, but I guess it’s actually a pretty big deal that Survival mode is exclusive for 1 year after playing how fun it is.
But my point is, I don’t see them taking so far of a step back in design where they make 16 maps for the base game in 2011, and then 2 in 2019. Especially when all the talk I’ve heard about this version is that they are going with more maps than ever before in multiplayer. So they are going to do that and then make players play the same 2 maps over and over in Survival? Not likely.
Survival mode is probably going to be a big experience with lots of maps. But it will definitely not be the only spec ops mode to play.
@themcnoisy @wiiware This affects PC players as well. You want them to just sell their PC's for a console? A console that's going to be replaced in a year or two? Come on now.
@MsJubilee That works both ways and parts need replacing / upgrading in PCs all the time.
I have every console due to my kids playing xbox and switch. I game on PS4 pretty much solely these days. But my PC is there when I need it. I'm lucky I suppose but Timed exclusives should just be boycotted by the effected party. It won't happen though as cod is casual city. Most of the players won't even know or care.
@themcnoisy And here I'm, thinking of getting the XB1S so late in the gen because Gamepass...
@FullbringIchigo It's bad if MS does this and it's the same with Sony...
Even worse, can you imagine paying the same price for PC or XB1 copies and getting less content???
Atleast us PS4 owners didn't pay for RoTR while it was exclusive...
@shuvamg009 oh true it's a terrible practise but i'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of it all, when MS was doing stuff like this all the time through the last gen the xbox fan base was lapping it up and rubbing it in everyone's face but now it's happening to them they cry about it
@DeepSpace5D - if it's as big as you think, then i would read that "Play First on PS4 - Timed Exclusive Content Until 1st October 2020" as maps/content for spec-ops survival will come first to PS4 until that time (the same way as zombie maps have done for previous games), after which content could be released on all platforms at the same time (though it's unlikely to have new content after that point) and not that the entire thing is locked out til then.
