There were rumours that Naughty Dog was targeting a 2019 release date for The Last of Us: Part 2, but that’s been bumped back internally, and Death Stranding has taken its slot. The latest speculation points to a February release date – and we wouldn’t be surprised if it dropped on Valentine’s Day, given some of the themes of the game.
To add further fuel to this burning inferno, Ellie’s actress Ashley Johnson appears to almost confirm the launch month in a Between the Sheets interview on the Critical Role channel. Asked about the release date, she responds: “I think it’s coming out in Fe—,” she says, before being interrupted and stopping herself from saying more.
Of course, with no official confirmation, anything can happen. It may be that February is Naughty Dog’s current target, but there’s every chance it could be pushed back. Our guess is that it’s getting close now, but with 2020 looking packed, don’t be surprised if some titles move around. Where does this sequel sit on your most wanted list?

Valentine's day will be cool haha.make love to the breakers.haha.word up son
Any year. Any month. Any day. Day one.
February sounds good, especially with what's already been lined up for 2020. They really couldn't have picked a better actress for Ellie than Ashley Johnson as well. She's such a treasure.
Thanks for sharing this.
2020 is shaping up to be perhaps one the greatest games lineups of all time:
The Last of Us Part II
Cyberpunk 2077
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Can't wait! PS5 Release too - 2020 is going to be epic!
That is official word 😂 Feb it is!
@Zombie9ers and the ghost of tshushima.word up son
Pretty low on my most wanted list if I'm completely honest and I still have no idea why. Loved the first but for some reason I just cannot get excited for this.
@Zombie9ers And Breath of the Wild 2 (if Nintendo have any sense and want people to keep buying the Switch after the PS5 is out.)
Makes sense and I was expecting it around then, its going to be an amazing start to next year
Calendar did get crowded all of a sudden, no?
November
Death Stranding, SWJ:FO, Shenmue 3
Feb
TLOU2, Gods & Monsters
March
W_D Legion, FF7R
April
Cyberpunk 2077
May
Marvel's Avengers, which every time I google it I only get Lego Marvel Avengers
Plus the usual holiday FPS and sports games.
And I'm still waiting on Concrete Genie and Ghosts of Tukishima.
Probably a good thing they didn't bother w/ BG&E2 at E3.
She was going for fe, fi fo fum. so I say April
This has to be by far my most wanted game above anything else right now, even though there are some great games on the horizon 😉
One thing I do need though is a blummin release date 😂
@Gatatog I feel the same. I think it’s that I like the ending of the first one. Having another game inevitably means more bad things happening.
Basically the type of games that most resonate with me right now.
Part of me would even want to wait till PS5 and play it at the highest detail level possible.
Well I wanted TLOU P2 to come this year but never in my mind I expected Death Stranding to come this year. I thought the game of that scope and ambition it will most likely be PS5 launch title. Now I can easily wait 3 months more for TLOU P2 because DS is coming this year.
As always, I'll reserve my hype until Sony drops the official release date. Besides, Ms. Johnson could have been breaking out into a stirring rendition of Peggy Lee's 'Fever' then thought better of it.
Roses are red
Violets are blue
You've turned into a clicker
I'm going to shiv you
I'm wondering if Sony was waiting to see when cyberpunk and ff7 were going to release first. I mean any game that releases around those is going to get crushed
My hype for this game is just below Cyberpunk 2077 and only marginally above Death Stranding (as I daren't get myself too excited for the FFVII remake just yet, though that is getting harder). Late 2019 to the first half of 2020 is gonna be so immense for my gaming life...and way less immense for my social life! 😄
Q1 next year is already looking damn expensive... but in reality I will only get Cyberpunk 2077 and that will take a huge chunk of my time up. I imagine a couple of games will get delayed.
Older Ellie in Feb, Midgar shenanigans in March and wake the f**k up samurai in April.
Next year is off to a flyer!
February would be good. It’ll give enough space between it to coming out on PS4 and then an upgraded version serving as a launch title with PS5 in the fall.
Chocolate that turns you into a Clicker.
Now THAT is a crazy Valentine's.
@rjejr nothing you need to worry about since I assume you’ll not buy any of those games unless the director personally comes to your house, strokes your head with a warm hand and gently whispers into your ear...”This game has an ending, and there will be more more sequels”
@kyleforrester87 That's pretty pyshic timing, I was seriously just thinking about asking Sammy if he knows if this game is going to be complete or a GoW and FF7R situation.
And while I'm always up for some humorous sarcasm I think I'd be fine with a simple "yes or no" on a cliffhanger ending. TLoU ended fine, even though this new game is coming out. I'm fine with, and fully expect them to, make more TLoU games, it's just to popular not too. But more games doesn't dictate if this game feels finished or not, the ending does.
But you can bet I will be asking. 😁
@rjejr oh I bet you will be asking
@Matroska And we already know breath of the wild is coming so?
@JohnnyShoulder cyberpunk is the one getting delayed
@Matroska BOTW 2 aint coming out next year lol
@Amppari I would be ok with that, if CDPR feels like they need more time to get it right, then so be it.
@zimbogamer the last I checked tlou outsold all the ff7 games combined,
2020 really going hard huh........
@Lekzie1 yeah but I bet if you go into the general public and ask what they are more excited for they will say ff7 remake. Dont get me wrong people are excited but ff7 has greater hype in my opinion.
I agree with previous comments. 2020 is gonna be amazing with all the games mentioned already. Not to mention surprises along the way. For example VR games which we tend to hear about nearer release date.
@zimbogamer people got hyped cuz they just got a release date and a trailer, if get out of ur comfort and browse a little how humungous thats been waitin for tlou2 even on death stranding release trailer people are askin for tlou2, the last 2 state of play, even of gamespot its been #1 on most anticipated title for nearly a year
@zimbogamer Lekzie is spot on. Last of Us 2 has more than enough hype to generate a lot of sales. Not to mention the first game sold over 17 million copies on PS3 and PS4 combined. It'll do just fine with other big name games in the mix. Not to mention that FF VII remake is an RPG, and The Last of Us 2 is an open world, survival game. Two different demographics.
@Amppari I dunno, they have the engine already. Majora's Mask came out a year and a half after OoT so if BotW2 came out sometime in 2020 it would have had at least 2 years longer in development than MM.
I finally started playing the original last week and I can't really see why it achieved such high praise to be honest. Yes the design is very good, but the narrative is quite cliché and I find the gameplay incredibly tedious and repetitive. Oh well, just not my cup of tea I suppose.
@InsertUsername if look at this chart by sony, more or less tlou sold 20 million combined, if u watched alot of vids on youtube tlou2 always appears on the comments, and if u look at days gone not even the mighty mk11 and rage2 stopped that game, what im saying theres a huge fanbase of ps exclusives what more if its the juggernaut like tlou2
Think I’m going to wait for the enhanced ps5 version. I already have a back catalogue that needs clearing.
Currently, it's the only game I'm anticipating.
I hope they don't delay it because of other "big" titles. They pushed Days Gone because of Anthem, and... well, we know how that went.
Xbox fan boys will hate this game regardless of how good it is, get ready for those 0/10 reviews on Metacritic, lol.
Feptember 2020, you heard it here first.
@East76landS which will do little but devalue Metacritic further. What such aggregator sites are even thinking when they make a "0" score available for something they call "reviews" is a mystery for another day. Do these people read Hammermill's volumes for books?
CTR will occupy all of my time when that releases so no rush for TLOU2. But that is my second most hyped title. Might as well sack off my steam account with the 100+ titles that I never use, and delete every other game I've bought. That said, I'll still buy FF7... Who knew too much choice vs too little time would be this bad!
