The curtain has closed on the first ever State of Play, which will be a recurring event throughout the year according to Sony – but how did it go? Obviously teething troubles are to be expected, but we did see a couple of neat games during the 20 minute event, including Iron Man VR and Mortal Kombat 11.
But did you enjoy watching the livestream? What do you think that PlayStation needs to do to improve on the format moving forwards? And what kind of announcements would you like to see during this event in the future? Try to be constructive in the comments section below.

Great first attempt I thought. Liked the format, liked the speed of delivery, and really enjoyed all the PSVR stuff. Cram better content into this (which they will) and this will be well worth looking forward to in the future.
I’ll give it the Meh... I think they should’ve showed Dreams a bit maybe.
Should've capped it with a big plus announcement. Now I'm assuming this month is going g to be underwhelming
I thought it was just awful. I wasn't expecting something like TLoU2 release date, but showing almost 15 mins of VR stuff and 2 trailers for games that are releasing in April was just silly.
Was hoping for a Ghost of Tsushima release date, but a solid start to be sure.
Concrete Genie continues to look fantastic.
In just one word... meh
I want to say poor, but that’d be unfair since I literally can’t use VR due to eye issues I was born with. I’ll go with meh as well.
I think they were missing the big opening title and the big end title. I feel like a new trailer for Last of Us 2 would have left a better impression for fans.
Wish it would of had at least a real person on the screen when the girl was talking...idk it was okay but felt to impersonal for a live broadcast
Not much in there for me, but the format of the show was good and will get better as time goes on (probably). Bit surprised there was no mention of PS+ or PS Now as it seemed a great opportunity to reveal next months offerings.
for a first episode this did not leave a good impression with all the VR focus. but atleast it was game after game without any PR talk in between.
so i think and realy hope that the next episodes will be more "meaty" regarding normal ps4 games instead of just VR after VR.
but then again i think they have revealed all there was regarding VR so maybe the next episodes will be more for my tastes.
days gone was the highlight for me and concrete genie looked nice aswell so there's that.
i did not expect any of the big 3 to show up in the first episode so can't be let down by that. but bluepoint could have made an appearance though.
The VR stuff was great, but everything else was just stuff we saw enough of already. Why not reveal the April psplus games!? facepalm
For a first time, it wasn't the worst thing.
Best part was the CTR trailer in my eyes. Kinda wish we got a Dream announcement, but ah well.
It was excellent. Presentation was what I wanted, plus they need to be seen pushing VR. So let's not write this off just cos you don't have a headset people. Not every episode is going to be for you.
With this format the chances future episodes will be more to your tastes.
Nothing amazing shown and too much time was spent on VR, but I wasn't disappointed. And the stuff shown was generally good and it was nice and concise. I hope they continue these.
Format and presentation were fine. I didn’t think most of the games shown were that interesting.
I thought it was good. I've not got VR but if I did, I would be glad of the evidence of on going support. The 5 nights game looks creepie as!! Concrete genie looks great and so does days gone.
I really liked the Iron Man VR but other than that I thought it was pretty flat. Hopefully it will improve and evolve into something a little more fun. I think they are going in the right direction with these videos but it needs work to make it stand out and have an impact. I’d say 5/10 but confident they will improve and listen to feedback.
Was expecting something about the next PS Plus update. Something big to be honest. The only thing I liked was the release date announcement for Everybody's Golf VR… Like the format though.
@Enuo GoT won't till 2020 so well away yet.
Didn't watch it, just scrolled the comments which gave a definitive "meh" vibe. No info on any big games... Very close to a fail but I'll allow for the first try blues. Next update had better be gooder.
This was clearly a test-bed and they reaffirmed their commitment to PSVR.
Good start.
shrug Yeah, sorry, that didn't do anything for me. Might be because there was a lot of VR announcements which I am not too invested in. Hopefully they do another one in the future.
Very disappointing. Did we really need a special format to show us more Days Gone and MK trailers?
I expected it to be a lot more like a Nintendo Direct. Total waste of time, especially if you dont own VR.
Maybe they're just testing the waters for now but I do feel it's a step in the right direction for announcement delivery. I've always thought Nintendo Direct was an excellent idea, small chunks of info throughout the year rather than waiting a whole year to potentially be disappointed.
Pretty poor if I am honest and I have vr so was nice to see some time given to that but was expecting a bit more something big announcement like bluepoints game
Good, seeing No Man’s Sky VR mode was the highlight for me... might pull be back in! I’m curious to see how it will look with standard PS4. Also Blood & Truth date... Not much for people not interested in VR though!
@AdamNovice I think sony has spoiled its fanbase That anytime they don't See new A big Budget AAA game they get mad
It was fine. I'm sure there'll be more stuff to show in time, almost felt like it was testing the waters.
Between good and meh. I like the fact that it has the Nintendo Direct-like format. The only thing that caught my interest, though, was Observation, the sci fi thriller game.
First everyone was complaining that Sony wouldn't support PSVR, and now they're complaining because they are.
There's no pleasing people these days.
thing is they could have had a better split between normal games and VR games.
does'nt matter if there are not any AAA games just a better split instead of just putting all the VR in 1 episode.
that way there would be more happy people on both sides.
I liked it but didn't love it. Felt a bit too short for me and I think it might be better to give the VR it's own State of Play rather than putting both into one. Not every one cares for VR games just like not every VR owners care about normal PS4 games anymore (I know quite a few that feel that way). But for those of us that love both would be happy to watch two different State of Play while everyone else can have the choice of one or the other if they don't like one of them. At least I would be happy to watch two separate ones anyway.
@AdamNovice
I couldn't watch but I will later on. Seems to be very focus on VR which is exactly what they need to do so they don't get drown by the traditional big games. Next event will be about non VR games n doubt
@Areus I think the opposite is true. It really lacked the presence of Indie announcements. Thats what makes Nintendo Direct so special.
The lack of any sort of surprise misses what makes Nintendo Direct work so well. Having essentially trailers for games that come out next month plus trailers for VR, which really doesn’t command a massive percentage of PS4 users, is a mistake. It would be equivalent to Ninty having 15 minutes spent on Labo.
I enjoyed the pace of it, but underwhelmed by the announcements. I thought Iron Man VR looked cool but I don’t have a PSVR. Might buy readyset heroes and concrete Genie
@Flopsy yeah no.
this is where i disagree.
might have made some bad calls but the talent is very much still there. but let's not go in that direction in this article.
I own a PSVR headset so I'm very happy Sony are showing further commitment to the headset.
Also, I like format. It's snappy and to the point but personally would've liked it to be just a little longer. I get that Sony are spreading these out over the year so i do understand they can only show so much.
Super excited for No Mans Sky VR. If i didn't already have PSVR this would sell me on it alone.
Looking forward to the next State of Play with hopefully more regular PS4 game announcements.
@Shepherd_Tallon tbh the bluepoint game had the biggest chance of any "bigger" game to be revealed.
i would be more annoyed if he was angry that we did not see any TLOU 2 gameplay or something because that would be having to much expectations.
Wish they’d had more to show but looks like VR is the main focus until they are ready to talk PS5.
And as good as the VR support looks it’s no surprise they are not doing e3 if this is the standard we’ll get through 2019, to be honest.
I won’t lie, I did hope for some FF7 Remake news 😂
Compared to the most recent Nintendo Direct, I would have to give it a Meh in regards to content. I thought the format was pretty good, and I’m sure it will continue to improve
format is fine. not much of interest to me personally, and a few odd exclusions (like no mention of dreams at all), but not going to criticise it just because there was a lot of VR. even though it's of little interest to me, PSVR is important to sony, and i get the need to focus on it, they've got assure those that are already invested in it, and those that have still to do so, that the games and content are coming, and that they're not just going to discard after a couple of years of moderate sales. plus, blood and truth had really impressive production values for a VR game.. the killer AAA app it's been looking for?.
i'll probably buy days gone, it's built using guerrilla's decima tech, so it should be reasonably solid, and i haven't bought anything since detroit become human.. concrete genie looks like an interesting creative niche title, very much in keeping with sony's heritage in that regard (thinking of games like puppeteer and rain on PS3), but need to see it's more than just a painting game though.
the execution.was kind of flat.no new announcements.at least a trailer for ghost of tshushima.word up son
I must say Sony is trying something new and I wasn’t expecting anything great. I must say they did pretty good on psvr titles. They showed me that they will supported for years to come. Any news is good news whether it is new or not I really enjoy this one. I will bet Sony will get better
@HefHughner people would have still been upset like how they were back when Sony used to push indies like they are doing for vr now
Pretty shameless in its copying of the Nintendo Direct format... it was almost beat for beat (with the box scrolling of hinting what's to come, even) that many of the newer format Directs have been using since the Switch era began.
That said, I think it worked well for Sony because it kept it moving with very little downtime. When they actually have a lot of new (non-VR) stuff to announce, this will really take off for them.
@playstation1995 Good things come to those that wait. that and iam in no rush my backlog is 2 consoles deep lol
It was very underwhelming.
Quite boring to be honest. Maybe they should just let Nintendo handle the Directs and Sony stick to boring me at E3..
@Areus I agree with you dog.i just love ghost of tshushima my most anticipated game.a trailer will be good.but I definitely agree with you my backlog is a lot.i got like 77 ps4 games to play.60 ps3 games.and I got a lot of ps1 and ps2 games.and psn games.and I'm still buying ps3 and ps4 games.haha👍.word up son
Fine for a start, I'd say. A bit on the short side, but this impression might change depending on the actual frequency behind their "throughout the year". Of course, the announcements were rather VRlicious which makes most of this stuff literally unplayable in my case, on more levels than one - but it would be preposterous to complain about the company providing/attracting more support for what, take it or leave it, has unarguably become PS4's most prominent peripheral.
Otherwise, this Dir- ahem, broadcast was also my first visual experience of Concrete Genie, and damn, it looks like an awesome project. Observation was intriguing, too. And Crash racing, of course - I'd be a fool to pick this over an already announced Switch version, but extra footage and stuff don't hurt. I won't deny I've walked away with more radar blips from the latest Nindies show, but what got my attention here made this a worthwhile half-hour spent regardless.
On a side note, I'm making these Direct jokes in good fun, but if someone is seriously itching to bash Sony... at least try to pick a more tangible reason. God forbid an industry replicates a functional trend! Like it or not, "copying Nintendo" has paid off for Sony and for console gaming more than once - even if not always to the extent Sony might have hoped for.
Weak. If they didn't have anything to show they should have waited to start this until they did so they could start with a bang.
Format wise it was fine. Didn't have much for me being so vr focused but still decent first attempt
Also bear in mind this wasn't some big hyped up event like E3, since this was just some thing they announced a couple of days ago.
If you love PSVR, this was very good. And that is how I voted.
The format is good, but the content was underwhelming. Things are not looking good, especially after losing three exclusives recently.
made me cancel my days gone pre order lol, game looks buggy
I thought it was pretty good. There were some cool announcements made, and I liked that they didn't shy away from PSVR. A decent first attempt!
Nothing much for me really as I have zero interest in VR. Wasn't expecting any big announcements but think they should have made some noise about EA Access or something similar.
Didn't care for the games at all, but liked the format
Don't own VR but I won't slate like everyone else. Enjoyed the stream. Always thought NMS would be perfect for VR. Definitely edged me closer to possibly getting one. Great start.
Format is great. The game selection needs improvement. I liked it overall.
I love VR so I'm happy with the support and I thought the format was good but id be lying if I said I wasn't expecting a lot more..
Hyped for Concrete Genie though..
was more like state of VR. and everything blatantly copied from nintendo
It was underwhelming. There was lots of VR things, but that doesn't interest me since I don't have PSVR. Outside of VR, there wasn't really a lot of tasty new info.
I hope they continue with these things. This was a first attempt, with some refinement and more interesting content these livestreams could be great.
People were told to temper expectations for State of Play. It was said to be an update on existing titles and PSVR announcements.
Instead outrage ensues because some thought you would see Death Stranding, Last of Us 2, new PS4 AAA exclusives, and a stealth PS5 announcement.
@slampog Facts.
@manu0 There is a rumor that Sony is trying to copy Labo, but the technology behind is too expensive.
I didn't watched it so I'll not vote, but for what it seems, I didn't miss out.
I liked it, but hopefully in the next, they advertise in advance if it will be focused on VR, PS4, PS5 and etc and tell how long it lasts (I saw a lot of people complaining that they thought it would last more than 2h).
It really missed something big, but I think it would be a mistake to show more of The Last Of Us 2, Death Stranding and Ghost Of Tsushima if it is not to announce the release date.
I'm starting to think that Sony will need to open/buy some studios to get enough content for years to come.
Is this the new fake outrage for Sony?
This is unbelievable, I wanted a Last of Us 2 release date, where was the ps5 news, so anti consumer, get a grip the show was good.
Oh, and the reactions from this stream explain very well why Sony likes to spend months and months without saying anything.
It was meh. I understand their line of thought as a marketing person. They want to advertise titles that would have not gotten any attention otherwise. It kinda worked, I have ReadySet Heroes is the back of my mind for no reason now lol. They wouldn't advertise a major titles before the release of Days Gone. Not even Nintendo does that.
It could be better, sure, I won't disagree. But you have to understand with a platform like this, they can push lot more on different titles.
Great way to kick this thing off imo. VR is the real next gen to me and i think will be for others once they take the plunge. Will purchase most of the VR titles for sure
Out of that bunch I will probably buy Blood and Truth (day 1) and Concrete Genie.
Gotta go with meh on this one. Not bad for a first attempt but nothing really special.
If they've did with the Vita what they're doing with VR...
Legend of Dragoon remaster where you at?
It will be interesting to see how often these are. Have Sony officially confirmed it? From the content shown I would guess at least every 4 months.
I loved it, no Shuman, no weird guests, paced well, plenty of gameplay and release dates.
Good to see the VR love, I'll be getting all of these,
Iron Man VR - 2019
Blood and Truth - 28th May
Everybodys Golf VR - 21st May
Trover Saves the Universe - 31st May
No Mans Sky - Summer 2019
Vacation Simulator - 18th June
Five Nights at Freddy's - Spring 2019
Falcon Age - 9th April
Concrete Genie - Late 2019
Jupiter and Mars - 22nd April
Format of the show was OK, but it was a poor showing of games for me personally.
It was in essence just a promo vid and it did the job to be fair.. I'd like to see a message from a human being at the beginning or something, just to add a bit of personality to it and maybe incorporate the PSPlus announcements with it, but on the whole, it was fine, nothing spectacular, but fine..
Not sure what people were expecting to be honest, if this is going to be a regular thing, the expectation of mindblowing announcements seems a little naive at this early juncture (albeit understandable given the last year or so of game releases). Yes it would have arguably helped it kick-off in style, but they would just be setting themselves up for a fall, so playing it safe, made sense on its debut imo...
Overall I'd say the stream was a letdown, but - I've gone absolutely crazy for that No Man's Sky VR announcement. Might actually convince me to finally buy a headset!
The format and delivery were fine... good, even... but for me personally, as someone not interested in VR, the content was largely irrelevant.
It was good to see a bit more of Concrete Genie and Days Gone, but it felt like they should have started this series when they had some heavy-hitter announcements to make, be that new games or release dates for the likes of TLOU2, Tsushima, etc.
Then again, maybe that was sort of deliberate... do the first one, get some feedback, then improve it for the next one which will - maybe, possibly, hopefully - contain bigger announcements.
It was perfect for me as a VR players. The only mistake they made is not state beforehand that it would mainly focus on PSVR. That's why non-VR players feel disappointed. They should guide expectations better of what to expect in a upcoming State of Play.
The format is superb, speed of game showing also great. For a first showing it was okay, hopefully the internet doesn’t put them off!
Format was fine, as it's just a copy of Nintendo Direct.
Content-wise, it was poor. Almost nothing for anyone without a PSVR, or into MK11 or Days Gone.
