Ah, Final Fantasy IX. Objectively the best Final Fantasy game ever made, it's a PSone classic. At the time of its original release, it went against the trends that Square Soft itself had set. Instead of following in the footsteps of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX ditched the series' most recent sci-fi leanings, opting for a world and adventure that had much more in common with traditional, storybook fantasy. It's a whimsical and charming title, and one that's still well worth playing today.
If you've got that nostalgic itch or you're simply the least bit interested in Final Fantasy IX, we'd recommend watching this new 20 minute documentary that Square Enix has uploaded to YouTube. In it, various members of the company discuss the game, its development, and its inner workings. Interesting stuff.
Are you a big fan of Final Fantasy IX? Just admit that it's the best one in the comments section below.

Good shout Ramsey, whenever I doubt your taste in videogames (daily) I always come back to FF9. I'll be watching this tonight or over the weekend, cheers!
Honestly, I'm still peeved they ruined the feel of the movement for the PS4 port though.
My ideal FFIX documentary is a Behind The Music style one centering on Necron, but I'll definitely watch this too.
I prefer VII, VI and X and still have to beat IX. I should really get back to it so I might Remote Play it on my Vita. Playing these games on a handheld feels so much better.
@kyleforrester87
@ShogunRok Time for another Dragon Age Inquisition play through, no?
I'm only agreeing because it's been so long since I played X, I can't remember it very well.
Seriously though, IX is a top class RPG if I ever played one. It's probably my favorite of the PS1 Final Fantasies, and all those are great.
I'd say FF9 is probably my fave along with FF12 and FF14 Heavensward. Yep.
(▰˘◡˘▰) I totally agree (▰˘◡˘▰)
FF1 will always be the one say is my favorite. Though i dont know if i could actually play through it again. Was the first rpg i ever played, changing my gaming preference forever. Was very hard to come up with 4 cool 4 letter names.
You are all wrong. The best FF game is obviously Chrono Trigger.
FFVI is the best and I will die on that hill!
IX is good too though.
I have an original PS1 copy of IX, but I have yet to play it.
Maybe I'll get it for the PS4 and give it a shot.
@Sakisa I didn't play FF6 on release, but I've played it, I can't really get my head round it being the best. It's pretty cool like, but it really falls apart for me following the "end of the world as we know it" bit.
Re-visited 9 on switch. It’s as good as I remember, my only issue is the story isn’t as strong as I remembered
The best Final Fantasy game is Knack.
@Octane go back to NL.
@ShogunRok thank you!!! At last someone that agrees. For me its not just the best final fantasy, but my favourite game of all time!
ix is great and might make my top 3 list, but viii will forever be my favourite — the atmosphere, music and overall story was on another level. i have played and completed every ff game in the series from vi and onward (except for xv which is wretched on pretty much every level).
IX is without question my favorite FF game. Here I was thinking I was alone.
@kyleforrester87 Reported.
VII and IX are my personal favorites. With IV and VI coming closely in 2nd. VII is easily the one i revisit the most (full playthrough every couple years) and the ONLY one i have a master file for with all Master Materia, Weapons Defeated, Ultimate Weapons and Level 4 Limits for all characters (even Aeris which was a SLOG lol)
9 has that great epic 1 hour long opening cutscene. Yeah, there's a little to play, btu it's mostly an hour long cutscene, and Vivi is for some reason I can't recall one of my all time favorite characters, but besides those 2 things I never really got into the game. I think it was TOO fantasy for me after 7 and 8. I played it to the end, and didn't hate it, but it's probably my 4th best after 7, 8 and 10.
FFIX is basically the BEST GAME ever made.
9 and 11 are the only ones I've never tried. I'll probably never have a go on 11 at this point, (because 14), although I think I fooled around with the character creation at some point....
9 is the big blind spot for me, and I know that it is rated highly. Looks like the switch tax isn't too bad on this one (some of the others coming our recently/soon are frankly shocking), so I'll probably get it there as it will have more chance of getting played while I'm away.
6 (or 7....) FTW
Great interview, i def teared up about that letter they got about the boy struggling with life. I’ve probably played 9 fully about a good dozen times, better every time. Still have my copy from release day!
Mr Ramsay drawing the battle lines in the sand!
Nine is the fifth best one don't @ me
Loved the documentary, wish it was longer.
I love the way when a FF game is apparently the best everyone defends their favourite.
I went off high fantasy in my early teens. So FF 9, Dragon age, Witcher and Lord of the rings can wave their bows and arrows at my FF7/8/10, Mass Effect, Horizon ZD and Aliens nuke attacks. Sci fi ftw.
Ff9 is my favorite. I adore the setting and the characters.
One of the best Final Fantasys. Soundtrack still pops into my head till this day.
