From time to time, Sony will email its consumers with surveys in order to gather information on a certain subject. In the past, we've seen questionnaires regarding the DualShock 4, PSN name changes, and PSVR -- it's something every company does to gauge how users are feeling about particular products or services. According to the website Twisted Voxel, Sony's at it again, this time with a focus on the future.
"It is a fairly simple survey that asks for a little more than a dozen questions, all concerning console or handheld gaming and how the user experiences it," claims the site. "The questions revolve around the user experience and how they utilize their console. They ask about streaming, playing games online or offline, and also have a question dedicated to owning consoles, mobile or other gaming devices."
Apparently, the email has only been sent out to European users. Here's what Twisted Voxel reports Sony says in the email itself:
Hi, we’d really like to hear your opinions on console gaming.
This helps us plan for the future of PlayStation® – and improve the experience for you and all of our players.
It won’t take up much of your time and we really do appreciate you taking part.
Many thanks
Your Sony PlayStation Team
None of us at Push Square have received such an email, and we've not seen any other evidence of the survey's existence. Of course, it could be legitimate, and if so, the thought of Sony reaching out to users regarding what will ultimately be the PS5 is quite exciting. However, unless you receive the survey yourself, we'd take this with a pinch of salt for now -- it may just be rumourmongering.
With Sony possibly questioning fans about what they want from their game consoles, what features would you like to see in PS5? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
Update: Some of you are telling us you've received and completed the survey, so this seems to be the real deal.

Since backwards compatability is most likely going to be a thing i wonder if we will still going to be able to party up with people on PS4 i know a few friends that aren't getting it day one
Dunno why they'd ask about handheld gaming. That market is dead aint it?
Id be asking better VR experiences, PC gaming and what they can transfer over, and if they play Candy Crush too.
@Spectra yep that BC compatibility is a must,
reminder to anyone who may receive an email from sony, tell them to include BC on our behalf
All I want for a Ps5 it's an Ape Escape
A new controller with asymmetrical analogue pads
Backwards compatible with improvements as with the PS4 Pro
Cross platform for all games (I don't about online games but many people do, this is my altruist comment of the year)
Obligatory 4K/60fps for every games
Possibility to charge those ****ing controllers without the PS5!
@Rhaoulos You har that on the Xbox and the Switch. Please dont force me too get used too a Xbox controller buy a custom one. Only agree with charging without the PS4 and backwards compatible. 😜
Player stats would be cool. Something along the lines of what PSN Profiles.com does
@Rhaoulos You don't need the ps4 to charge controllers though?
well, a hardware that can do 4k60fps as a standard, (or atleast 1080p60 standard)
BC compatibility (at least from the ps4 catalog) or if they're feeling generous, from ps1 -ps4 ( highly unlikely but one can hope)
I guess a better cooling system? my PS4 Pro sounds like jet engine when it runs GOW
oh yeah, an SSD too if they can fit those within the 500$ (worst case) price
@SKC_Diamond he wants them standard, I doubt Sony would alter the Dualshock layout to resemble the xbox controller as they'd be branded as copycats, if he really wants that asymmetrical layout he can always buy licensed 3rd party controllers
@Rhaoulos Obligatory 4K 60fps won't be a thing. It's too limiting on devs, if they want to push graphics to the full but be 30fps then they should be allowed too.
@Rhaoulos uhhhh do you really need the ps4 to charge your dualshock? I just stick this badboy to any available micro usb in the house and charges no problem
@Amplified I think you replied to the wrong person i was talking about the charging thing lol
ps5 14 teraflops. 6tb hard drive.ps5 launch games. sly Cooper 5.resistance 4.god of war 2.horizon zero dawn 2.bloodborne 2.syphon filter remaster.word up son
@Quintumply I got this email yesterday. Haven't done the survey yet but if I do and find anything contrary to your article, I'll let you know.
@Quintumply I got the email yesterday and did the survey. It was more of a general of what systems do you own, how often you play, what are your fave genres, etc.
@JohnnyShoulder @RogerRoger Interesting, thanks!
Didn't they do this last year as well?
Don't think it'll have any bearing on PS5 really, it's more of a standard marketing survey.
@SKC_Diamond my bad, I was printing documents during typing, wont bother editing it though, I'm too lazy to do that
i got one of these about 3 months ago "help shape the future of playstation" - the questions were fairly vague and generic, and not particularly related to PS5 imo. it was more like "do you enjoy multiplayer gaming?" then asks about the reasons for your choice/rating.. such questions could just as easily be about future games, or future ps+ changes.
PS5 won't include backwards compatibility just because people ask for it, it'll only include it if it's technically possible and financially viable.
@Knuckles-Fajita Handheld definitely isn’t dead, it’s just resulted in Switch. By all intents, it’s a handheld in that the games, the storage, the CPU is all in the handheld console. I don’t think PS5 will go down that route after PS Move on PS3. It’ll probably just be yet another sustaining technology, with nothing much different. I’d like to be surprised though.
I filled this out last night (im in Japan so 24 hrs ago as I write). Mostly asked me about ownership of hardware, how often I play, hours handheld vs traditional console and types of games I like to play.
Future PlayStation will need to include built in adjustable short throw laser projector at 8K resolution or foldable screen at 100+ inch, with virtual 360 audio or surround speakers all at the price of under 500 dollars. All Bravia image processing technology will need to be included. The form factor will also need to be sized similar to modern smart phones so it can be used as one, or as a portable console, along with the ability to transform into a VR or AR headset.
4k HDR as standard (30fps is fine, and I actually prefer it to 60 in some situations, but that's up to the devs anyways), backwards compatibility and a built-in 4k Blu-Ray support are the only things I'm particularly desperate for. The rest can be pretty much whatever they like. As long as the standard of games (particularly single player cinematic adventures) continues then Sony have my money.
I want a future with a Dreams beta!
Backwards compatibility and no stupid censorship policies please.
It should have a silencer, liquid cooling and metallic paint.
I want backwards compatibility with PS4, PS2 and PS1 games.
Personally not sure how helpful i would be. I didn't even know most of the best features on ps4 were things i needed until Sony introduced them. Interesting Sony asked about handhelds
I want a balanced console with good price and good performance, also I want bc for at least ps4 games, it will be great if there's bc for every playstation console and portable with good graphics filter like on pc emulator.
@SKC_Diamond @Amplified the original controllers wouldn't charge off a USB plug. If I use the controllers that came with my Pro no issues. But if I'm using my 1st Gen PS4 & controllers I still have to plug the darned things in to the PS4 to get a charge.
More than xbox does you start filling them out and it's all about gamepass and if you don't want it or dont have it the survey crashes halfway though.
BC is a very important feature, I like to play older titles sitting in my library. Right now I had to dust off the PS3 because I really really wanted to replay Jet Set Radio...
My fantasy PS5 list... Streaming PS5 to my smart TV from anywhere in the room (using WiFi) even though 5-10 metres away without requiring a hdmi lead! VR which acts like a smart TV... and therefore PS5 streaming to VR headset from anywhere in the house. I want to lie down on my back on settee - with the VR able to play movies and games without relying on intrusive camera. A normal PS5 gui, but a layer infront of that which consists of only my favourite 4 shortcuts (it could be games, netflix, bbc, etc) accessed with triangle, x, square and circle. If I press ps home or scroll down in any direction it takes me back to normal gui. PSN shop to include links to games, movies, music and gaming merch, even gaming related events - esport arenas, gaming music concerts, etc! To be able to buy a game on my mobile app (ahem at work, holiday, etc) and when purchased to be able to wake up PS5 to download stuff so it's there when I get home. Send digital games as gifts to my gaming network. To set up weekly live gaming tournaments and broadcasted via PS5 broadcasts in short watchable bursts like sports eg. Max 3 hours... Sort of how LOL does it on twitch. To send mates invites to watch a live gaming esport together. To be able to speak to dualshock and start, games, search for media etc like alexa! Is that enough dreaming?!
They did so well with ps4, they should not go messing with what theyve been doing trying to shake things up and reinvent anything. Dont fix whats not broken.
Only thing i truly want is 60fps minimum. Resolution simply isn't as important and doesnt make as big a difference as fps.
OG DS4 pads charged on any charger above 1.1amps and you had to use a usb cable rated for over 1.2amps if I remember correctly.
So if you was using a samsung phone charger you was golden for that
No need to ask i'll buy one now....
Ps5 to have backwards comparability, options for display setting (e.g. native 4k at 30 fps or checkerboard with 60), exclusives to be 4k at 60 fps, options for gyroscope aiming, open up access to streaming app to all android so if you can't play on the tv, you can stream to another device and play handheld, even if it is only locally (like what you can do with pc just now).
Have not received but if I do:
1. Backwards Compatibility with PS4. I highly doubt my backlog will be cleared by release holiday 2020, and if no BC then I delay getting a 5
2. Continued emphasis on single player non-online exclusives
3. Make it just like the PS4 but with better specs
4. Keep the optical drive, I like physical over digital
5. Add better volume controls to the current duel-shock controller
6. An improved, and faster rest mode
@Feena Dust off? Shocking! Why does it still not have a position of pride? What on earth has it done to deserve being hidden away in the first place? I still have mine connected and use it regularly. I'm adverse to BC for this very reason. There's perfectly adequate, working, machines being tossed aside just for convenience. How environmentally friendly is that.
@Eldritch I don’t like having too many things plugged or on display, I am a minimalistic freak lol ~ but I keep them stored away very tidly, dust off is inappropriate.
To SONY - I want the next PlayStation to just be called PlayStation and play all my PS1 & PS2 & PS3 & PS4(& ALL future PS Discs) Discs Thank you SONY. Ahh...nice Dream anyway
@Feena lol I have to admit to being the same. So I cheat and have all my consoles in a separate room and have run cabling through. Means I get the minimalist look and avoid all the fan noise etc from the consoles.
These are my list of features that a PS5 should/must have:
1. Backward Compatibility with every PS1, PS2, PS3, & PS4 Games; as well as to play PSP & PSVITA Games
2. 4K HDR enhanced
3. Every specs and features that PS4 has but better and more improved.
4.faster upload and downloads.
5. Higher resistance and stronger materials, not able to break easily, and no dust or dirt to get in the way.
6. Unique and stylish design (PS4 was good but it just looked like a piece of box).
I received the email 2 hours ago but the link is invalid... Maybe they stopped it?
