It's been a big week for PlayStation 4 in Japan, where the platform's two latest and greatest heavy hitters have immediately topped the software charts. Straight in at number one with a whopping 610,000 copies is Kingdom Hearts III, while the Resident Evil 2 remake claimed second place with a very respectable 253,000 copies. The previous week's top seller, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, dropped down to fifth, but still managed to shift an additional 25,000 copies.
But did the release of these new blockbusters boost PlayStation hardware at all? Well, for the first time in a while, the standard PS4 and PS4 Pro saw a jump in sales, moving a combined 53,000 units. That's enough to just beat out the Nintendo Switch -- something that Sony's console hasn't done a long time.

Big numbers for the new PS4 titles.
KH 3 over 600K?!?! Dafuq!!!! Congrats to SquareEnix.
lets be honest was this really a surprise?
on a side note i know that the XB brand barely sells in Japan but it would be interesting to know what the split was for Kingdom Hearts 3, and what the split was in the UK and U.S too
anybody know?
And RE 2 over 250K. Capcom will now always release a game in January. I love this new trend btw. Congrats Capcom.
Your switch number is wrong, its 52,429. Ps4 (52.644) outsold switch.
Technically PS4 outsold the Switch by a couple hundred units.
Possibly the last time that will happen.
Not surprised by the jump in Pro numbers, even I picked one up...
although I’m still waiting for it & my copy of the game😡!!!
Finished Kingdom Hearts III today (got it early). It is my favourite game on PS4 in general, loved every single second.
@Neolit Been playing them since I was a kid.
Two blockbuster titles release in Japan and the Switch still maintanes momentum. I'm speechless. O_O
To retain-:
Xbox One X – 82 (94)
Xbox One – 11 (24)
Monster sales...
@ShogunRok there is one thing i'm confused about what do the numbers in the brackets mean
i have been meaning to ask for ages
@FullbringIchigo previous week's sales for hardware, total sales for software.
@nhSnork AHH OK that explains it
thanks
@IBeAGamer
It must be really short to finish in this time even if you got early , unless you had a lot of free time.
@suikoden depends on what he or she considers finished for example the original Kingdom Hearts can be finished in less than 14 hours if all you do is the story (it's even one of the trophies on the HD collection) but if you do everything else then it can triple the time needed to play, for example i was fully exploring everywhere i went and and spent 3 hours just in the first world
"53,000 units. Still not enough to dislodge the Nintendo Switch from the summit"
That's funny as about 8 of the first 10 comments on NL were about the combined PS4 sales outselling the Switch this week.
I've noticed neither site thinks it will happen again but I'd guess TLOU2 release week has a shot with some well priced bundles. Then it's on to the PS5.
Holding off on KH3 until after I play all the earlier games. I've played 1 and 2 but that's it. So.... probably on PS5. 😁
@rjejr ya know tho if Capcom made MHW: Iceborne a separate SKU and not DLC (ala previous games) then for about a month or til PokéSwitch unless Pokémon is right next to it or something. The PS4 would stand tall in Japan for a while.
I think only title I can think of to boost PS4 again in Japan is Sekiro: SDT.
Next title to boost PS4 again is prob Sekiro... unless Japan is exhausted with Souls games.
If MHW Iceborne was a separate expansion game I can see that topping PS4 overwhelmingly.
@Lando_ Although now I’m randomly imagining you’ll do to your Switch (if you haven’t sold it yet) what Blackb0nd did to his Wii U (he cooked/burned it there’s a video on YouTube on it).
Looks like the initial numbers were wrong. I've updated the article.
@ShogunRok You can't update the article, it destroys the narrative. 😉
jk I always appreciate corrections. 😊
@Derpie1 I think PS4 could get 1 good weekly boost in for a big price drop or new model PS4. I don't think they'll want to sell 3 models at once, $200 Slim, $300 Pro, $400 PS5, so they'll drop either the Pro or Slim or combine them I to 1 sku - Pro power in a slim body at Slim price.
But at some point they need to announce something, unless they want to try to sell 3 models at once, which I thik is too much shelf space in stores.
Nice to see both the Resident Evil 2 remake and Kingdom Hearts 3 come out of the gate strong (hope we get some official NA numbers as well). The hardware boost is also good, wonder how many more games are left this gen that can move home consoles in Japan.
@suikoden I did like four 8 hour sessions I was able to book a week off work but guess that wasn't needed.
@Derpie1 OH my God. He really grilled his Wii U. What the eff!? People seem to have too much money.
Nah, I won't do that to my Switch. I'm not that much of a Nintendo hater, I guess.
Okay doing the math the PS4 consoles only sold 215 more units than the NSW and that still doesn’t negate the sheer fact that the NSW is already at the PS4’s 5yrs lifetime sales number, in Japan, in just under 2yrs. Both being at 7mil and some change, one since 2013 and the other since 2017, is telling. Especially if you take into consideration all of the third party content, along graphical and resolution capability advantages the PS4 has over the NSW. Just saying this report is rather redundant. How much to you want to bet if Square Enix does get it onto the NSW with exclusive Nintendo content, it’s sales will beat out the PS4’s hands down.
@Lando_ It’s on YT
Some think it’s a little extreme but ey. I’m sure someone on this site (as you said not you) who has pockets filled w 💰 would be ok with burning a Switch to smithereens.
@Saiorus nah it’s been proven with 3rd Party games. The Japanese market don’t like redundant ports only a small niche will buy it. For example Monster Hunter Double Cross (XX). On 3DS it sold 1.8ish Million copies. Switch it sold like 200K why is this? Cus the Japanese consumers already have it on 3DS.
Dragon Quest XI S I can see that ver not selling as well as either the 3DS or PS4 ver because it’s redundant, it already came out on PS4/3DS. Now if DQXII comes out on Switch & PS4 Same day I can see the Switch ver Selling lots of copies or let’s pretend FFXVI came to Switch & PS4 then I think you get my point.
@JAMes-BroWWWn
And Capcom did ONE thing right for the past years and that's to Not put their games on a Nintendo port'n'flop machine. Capcom has earned back my trust, and i am looking forward to games developed by them.
@Neolit Oh Jeez where to begin. I am a fan of the series but have yet to play two games (Dream Drop Distance and Chapter 2.9). I’m holding off KHIII for now until I finish this. But seriously, either prep yourself for some serious play time over multiple games or read / watch an in depth summary as the story only gets more crazy as it goes along.
You can pick up the PS4 HD1.5 & HD2.5 double pack pretty cheaply and the HD2.9 ain’t much more. Its just you’ll need to put in quite a lot of hours first.
