Sony has released the latest firmware update for PS4, bringing it up to system software version 6.20. This mandatory update doesn't seem to bring any new features to the console, instead simply keeping everything ship shape, as per usual. "This system software update improves system performance," our PS4 tells us.
Firmware update 6.20 isn't particularly big, weighing in at just 450MB, so it won't take you long to get it downloaded and installed. We did wonder if this update would be introducing PSN name changes to more people, seeing as the firmware version for the name changing beta is 6.10. However, we can't see any options to change our username after installing firmware 6.20. Still, it's a required update, so set it to download, but come back and leave us a comment while you wait.

as it's mandatory my guess is it's putting some important groundwork in place for the next big update
Guess I'll put down the controller for a bit and start working again then
Wouldn't let me DL it at first had to go through safe mode, all good now
Just a heads up the beta has been pulled already. Name change obviously still in place but the beta which brought name changes is already gone as of about 2 weeks ago and I was forced to update to a non beta 6.2 firmware.
So strong, so stable.
All I want for Christmas is system stability
One day Sony will release an update to the PS4 that will include "increasing system performance" AND "stability"... Minds will be blown.
Super stable like Alisson, Gomez and VVV at the back.
It's a strong and stable firmware update!
@NintendoFan4Lyf
Its just a way to say the update is improving things since people were making fun of 'stability' they used to say a few years ago.
Oh cool,I was looking forward to this update!Love a bit of stability.
@NintendoFan4Lyf My guess and a theory I've always had. Sony isn't really improving system performance rather than tackling piracy. I remember the psp and the custom firmware. It seemed Sony would release an update shortly after the current firmware was hacked. This is how I remember it. I used to argue the pointless nature of the firmware that Sony was releasing to stop the hackers when really am sony was doing was preventing them with a challenge to hack. Everytime a new firmware from Sony came out nothing had changed in terms of features or something very basic was added as if to give us a reason to update. But one thing it stopped at that time was pirate games. I bet the hackers wished Sony brought out new updates on a weekly basis as the hackers loved to hack. Piracy was a major problem on psp and it was always easy to copy downloaded games from pc to the psp.
As we clearly never see our PS4 show any improvements after each update and especially the huge but very disappointing 6.0 update. My UI and slow ps store, news feeds, syncing trophies etc are still very slow on an 100Mpbs ethernet connection. So as on psp, most likely, vita and ps3. These updates are sony trying to stop the hackers
Alright it’s time to pony up and get more stable
@RedMan33 I turned on my PS4 yesterday to download the firmware update. It's usually a set-t-and-forget-it affair for me, but this time the download just started and seemed stalled for a while. I had to pause and resume it several times to get it to finish. It wasn't a case of the WiFi dropping out because my PS4 is ethernet connected to the router and all my other wireless devices were accessing the feed just fine. Did the slow/stalled firmware download happen to anyone else on here?
@Turismo4GT nope it was pretty quick and seamless for me, it's possible that a high level of traffic on PSN (where the update would be downloading from) could have caused the issue for you
And one day, Sony, God of Consoles, shouted down from the heavens and said, " Let there be stability". And there was stability , and Sony, God of Consoles, could see the masses rejoicing and was so pleased that he promised to return one day to bring forth even more stability.
Seriously i am glad for all of these updates for stability as i use my PS4 evey day for gaming and the web browser.
@Turismo4GT it just wouldn't install at all for me had to do it in safe mode
@JJ2 --- I installed the update yesterday before leaving for work. When I got home, oh yeah, was my system stable. A nice stable, steady BLACK SCREEN! I have a ps4 Pro that I've been playing on a non-4K Sharp Roku television with no problems whatsoever. I've been looking around the internet since last night trying to find exactly what the update was supposed to 'improve'. In my case, it certainly wasn't performance. It also seems like this black screen issue is a frequent problem after past updates, although I've never had this problem before.
@LWhite54
Ah Im sorry to hear. I think Ive heard this sort of problem before on previous updates with some users. No idea what s causing it.
