Thanks to a range of promotions at various Japanese retailers, the PlayStation 4 had its best week in a long, long time. Sony's console shifted an impressive 75,000 units across the standard model and the PS4 Pro -- that's a rather dramatic increase of roughly 55,000 units week-on-week. It'll be interesting to see whether these numbers can hold any kind of ground as we move deeper into the holiday season.
Even with the PS4's success, though, nothing's knocking Nintendo off the top of this year's Christmas tree. The Switch commands the hardware charts thanks to the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which unsurprisingly dominated the software side of things. The only new PS4 game to enter the top 10 was Just Cause 4, moving a paltry 16,100 copies.

Amazing. In it's first three days or so on the market, Smash managed to outsell Pokemon over there.
Everything got a Christmas bump except for the poor Xbone X.
@Ralizah that’s because the new one isn’t NECESSARILY for everyone...
Finally, since MHW, a good hardware bump for PS4 in Japan, to be fair the offer of 2 free games and roughly £40-50 off retail price is a pretty nice Christmas offer and was clearly very tempting.
@toffeecrit then ofc once KH3 hits PS4s will fly off shelves
As much as I love Nintendo (user name & profile pic is a good giveaway) I've never really got the whole fascination with the Smash Bros franchise
I've played them all from the N64 through to the Wii U version and I don't know what it is. just seems to be very basic bare bones fighter compared to say Mortal Kombat or Street fighter
@Marios-love-child smash bros is appealing because it's a typical "easy to learn, hard to master" game (like for example chess and tetris) whereas most traditional fighters are hard to learn and hard to master.
@Marios-love-child I bought Melee on the Gamecube and returned it the next day. Not sure how I manged that, but I did. I thought it was the most boring thing ever, played for about an hour, maybe less. A couple of years later I picked it up again and realized Nintneod had the default settings as the most boring - 3 minute rounds. There was SO MUCH to do in the settings I played for hours after that, and pretty much everything is more fun than the bog standard 3 minute round. There must have been a billion different option combinations, it was insane. Brawl was all about Subspace Emissary, played that about 100 hours single player and co-op. Wii U version didn't have single player, didn't play it. I'm looking forward to single player World of Light, but again also trying out all of the options. Lots of options.

Should be said I don't play any fighting games, I'll just play this for fun with my family, I could see fans of other fighting games not being impressed. It's not abotu fighting for me but stuff to do. Though we arne't paying for online, have to see how much that limits us, hopefully not too much.
Nice PS4 sales for a 4 1/2 year old system w/ rumours of it's successor everywhere. Sales are good.
@Marios-love-child I don't see the appeal either. Its the same reason people are so obsessed with Call of Duty games. Multiplayer is addicting for these folks. It helps that it's a Nintendo game, and there is a bias in favor of Nintendo within the industry(at least in my opinion), so naturally, years of glorifying it is going to rub off on those who grew up in the N64/NGC era. The media can influence such an appeal, but that doesn't work on every consumer. To be fair, it's not a bad franchise as I've played a few in the past, but it's not something I'd go out and buy day one. Nintendo games just never really aroused my interest.
Smash didn’t just top chart. It’s sold more than every other game put together.
@KingdomHeartsFan It's not so much about Christmas itself but Japan still has holiday sales and promotions.
@Derpie1 not sure the base models will fly of shelves but isn't there a limited KH3 edition coming out, i'm sure that will sell out as soon as it's on sale.
@KingdomHeartsFan Japanese Christmas period is actually a big deal over there, it just isn't exactly the Christmas that we in Europe or America celebrate as there is almost no religious connotations and it isn't a national holiday. It is more festive and fun with illuminations and Christmas markets etc, and about the spirit of giving over that period, specifically for the new year, but there is the Oseibo gift giving, which overlaps Christmas, while Christmas Eve has become a couples day, a bit like Valentines day. Nothing to do with gifting but for some reason KFC has become a traditional Christmas meal!
@munkondi seeing these Xbox sales are always dreadful.
@rjejr "Though we arne't paying for online"
Good thing you aren't paying for online because SSB Ultimate online sucks they remove the for fun and for glory options and it's probably worse than SSB4 online which was free btw, so in other words you are good and not missing much since you like the single player aspect of the games especially the new mode World of light which is a grind mode
Surprised by that PS4 sales I thought Japanese started to hate Sony and not buying anything other than Nintendo even when some of their games are mediocre at best
Let’s be honest: at this stage in the life of the PS4 most people who wanted one have bought one, there is far less new games driving sales, an the PS5 is looming on the horizon.
What I do find interesting is how the list of Switch games are all different genres. Nintendo has worked well to make a diverse selection of games and they all seem to be selling well- at least in Japan.
It wouldn’t hurt for Sony to take note and add some wrinkles into the mass of over the shoulder sandbox/story based adventure games.
@GKO900 My kids dont' like online, too competitive for them, they'd rather mix and match items and options and modes. Apparently this game has a mode that allows for both stock and damage, something like that, my kids always wanted and now they have. I pretty much just play to make my wife play, b/c watching her play is hilarious.
I just ordered Judge Eyes so that's going to help the next sales chart
