Best PS4 Music of September 2018

August was absolutely packed to the brim with good PlayStation music to treat your ears to, so it’s not terribly surprising that there are fewer highlights for September. Fewer highlights however doesn’t mean there’s nothing to talk about, as the stand-outs from this past month are some pretty special releases.

Destiny 2: Forsaken

While the music in Bungie’s money-printing FPS has never really been able to match the highs it achieved in the first game courtesy of Martin O’Donnell, the music has remained pretty consistently at least decent. The epic sound that the series has been associated with continues with the Forsaken expansion thanks to the composition team of longtime Bungie contributor Michael Salvatori, as well as Skye Lewin, Rotem Moav, and Pieter Schlosser.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Sony’s newest successful exclusive, and one of the fastest sellers of the year also happened to include a marvel-ous soundtrack courtesy of John Paesano. Able to deftly combine the bombast expected of the score for a superhero with more emotionally engaging pieces, Spidey’s score packed one heckuva punch.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

While Lara Croft’s newest adventure didn’t elevate the series quite in the way many people may have been hoping for, it definitely did not disappoint in the soundtrack area. Brian D’Oliveira provides an absolutely phenomenal score, mixing tension, emotion, danger, and intensity amongst many other sounds providing a banquet for the sonic palette.

Life Is Strange 2

Life Is Stange carved out a niche with its original release by offering a smattering of music that hipsters would drool over alongside some marvelous ambient music, whereas the follow up/spinoff Before the Storm married those two ideas by just getting a band that hipsters would drool over to make the ambient music too. And DONTNOD’s sequel continues the trend keeping much the same type of sound around, except this time accompanying a decidedly different tale in its burgeoning world.

We’re getting to the home stretch now, with only a few more months worth of releases to go, but now is the time of year when a lot of the big guns come out, so we can definitely look forward to some big titles in the coming months.
