The PlayStation 2, the best selling console of all time, is officially dead. Obviously, Sony stopped producing the system a long time ago (in 2012, to be precise), but only now, in 2018, has it ended customer support for the platform in Japan. The final, final, final nail in the coffin, if you like.
The PS2 originally launched in March 2000, so it's nearing its 19th birthday in Japan at the time of writing. We said our goodbyes to the console years ago, but writing this story has reminded us of how much we loved that sleek piece of hardware and its many, many games.

It will live on in the legacy theme
Rip legend
Great console.
My favourite games on the system were Kingdom Hearts 2, Need For Speed Underground 2 & SmackDown! Vs RAW.
I still have mine I might play a game on it today or watch a DVD on it for old time sake.
Also No DLC,NO manatory internet connection and NO patches that are bigger than the game that take up half of your SD card or Hard Drive.
It was the best console and was part of the best console generation (gen 6. ps2, xbox, gamecube, dreamcast, gba.)
So many great games and memories, thanks for everything.
Maximo 1 and 2. PS2 its the time when everything kicked off. I have two of them well preserved and ready for gaming.
@andrew20 And no fortnite and cross play . No Fps and sizes of puddles.
I still remember the day when my older brother came home with a brand new PS2.
Good times.
To be honest, I was never a huge fan of ps2.
ps1, ps2 and ps4 have had some fantastic exclusives. Can't think of many on ps2. Perhaps just God of War.
Nineteen years... darn, I'm old.
Gone but never forgotten. One heck of a console, nothing but fond memories for all three of mine (including the one that I still use on a regular basis).
Proper memories and it’s exactly why I have such an issue with all these online only games! We’ll end up with no retro gaming and no way to relive past glory’s!
Once again, rest in peace, my favorite console.
Good night sweet prince, I have many many fond memories on this system
Pre-ordered mine and queued outside GAME from 7am to get it. The first and only time I've ever queued for a system.
Never played much, but what I played I loved. I was ins college during this condole generation and other things became priority in those years.
PS2, The G.O.A.T.
Awesome, wonderful amazing console. So many great games!
"This PS2 is no more, it has ceased to be. It has expired and gone to meet it's maker, this is a late console."
@TheIronChimp it was a time were even failed consoles (gamecube and dreamcast) had a lot of exclusive titles from both first and third parties. Every single one of the consoles was worth owning.
One of my favourite consoles ever, possibly my all-time fave.
best console ever.word up son
god of war.manhunt.gta san andreas.gta 3. gta vice city.sly cooper.etc.wow.word up son
ps2 is the king.legendary.the g.o.a.t.thanks for the memories.word up son
Killed my beloved dreamcast 😭
@naruball I can see why you wouldn't have any particular affinity for PS2. However, while the exclusives aren't for everyone, they sure were for me. Jak and Daxter, Sly, God of War, as you said. Not to mention Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 used to be exclusives.
The PS2 is dead.
At least this is not a trolling phrase but a mark of respect for a fantastic machine because it took so long to the ineluctable end.
Who the hell put that disc in upside down?
@playstation1995 @Gremio108 @mookysam @wiiware @DerMeister @RogerRoger @PS_Nation @JoeBlogs @Fight_Teza_Fight RIP my favorite gaming console during my teenage years...I still remember my first PS2 games for it, Ratchet & Clank 1 and Mega Man X7.
My mom also got me a Harry Potter Quidditch game that came with my PS2 but I tossed it out, never cared for sports games.
@KidBoruto The PS2 was the first console I bought with my own cash, after a few weeks in my first proper job. GTA 3 was the first game I got for it. That Christmas my parents got me Silent Hill 2. And that was just the start. Great machine.
@Gremio108 I never played any M rated games on my PS2 to my knowledge sadly.
My first ever console that my parents bought me for christmas. I might dig mine out and play some old classics like scooby doo night of 100 frights or HP chamber of secrets. I may finally finish HP this time around
@Shepherd_Tallon I'm not crying, YOU'RE crying!!
@NintendoFan4Lyf Thanks for reminding me about Katamari Damacy! Although I missed out on that game, but We Love Katamari was the first and, to date, only game I've ever stayed up all night playing. Such happy memories!
@andrew20 ain't that the truth, only problem we had then was waiting for a game the Japanese and American had a while beforehand and also memory card space. Definitely the last generation of consoles without the BS we face today (loot boxes, free to play, microtransactions, DLC, patches)
PS2 is still the console that I had the most fun with and I don't see that changing since the fun I had was partially because of my age and amount of responsibilities...Maybe the PS1 share the first place with it.
I was working in toys R us when it was released. I remember so clearly how 2 grown men got in a punch over their places in the que. 😂
long live tommy vercetti
Goodbye, old friend. You will be missed! Although can we all agree it had a very amazing run? 19 years! That’s awesome, most systems don’t even make it past 8 these days. Hats off to Sony in that regard.
End of an era...
Everquest online adventures, with that network adapter... Did any other games ever use that?
@ellsworth004 - I think SOCOM might have used it?
I'm still waiting for the HD ports/remasters of Baldur's Gate: DA 1 & 2 and Champions of Norrath 1 & 2 from this beloved beastie
I missed out on the PS2 at the time. I was 100% Nintendo and Gamecube, which I loved and still do. At the time the PS2 didn’t hold much appeal to me, I only really saw it as the console that had GTA, Need for speed etc, games that hold zero appeal to me.
How wrong I was.
I now have one and playing massive catch up. ICO, SotC, Silent Hill 2, Odin Sphere, Sly Cooper (awesome franchise), Ratchet/Clank, Jak & Daxter, God of War, all the other ‘horror’ games like the suffering, haunting ground, rule of rose, siren, project Zero, echo night 2. Oh, and something called Metal Gear Solid. The list goes on and on!
I wish they allowed firmware updates via USB.
The PS2 OS was always pretty awful and ugly.
I wish Sony could have evolved it over time and made it better.
I could get back into the PS2 more if the OS wasn't so clunky.
@KidBoruto My first games of PS2 were: Tony Hawk 2 (the PS1 version), Onimusha, Fifa 2001 and Moto GP. Gran Turismo 3 and Metal Gear 2 were next. Time flies.
@PS_Nation I've only played Tony Hawk 2 from those games, but I have alot of great memories.
