Final Fantasy XV has sold 7.7 million copies both physically and digitally since its release in 2016, making it the fastest selling entry in the famous franchise thus far. According to some number crunching online, this also makes it the fourth best-selling game in the series to date, and it’s apparently outpacing Final Fantasy VIII, based on historical data.
The game’s clearly done well for itself, because publisher Square Enix has committed to another round of DLC content, exploring the stories of the title’s wider cast. While it has got issues in terms of structure, story, and pacing, we generally really enjoyed the gameplay loop of the open world outing – and we’re particularly fond of its road trip vibes.

Its also the worst entry in the series
I liked it. I have mega issues with the story, but I enjoyed it overall.
@Radbot42 i take it you never played FFII, or All the Bravest then?
Great game until chapter 12 or 13 where the game turns into something totally different, caused me to quit playing permanently.
@FullbringIchigo Im waiting Royale Superdeluxe now its really Complete Edition. 😜
And im probably the only who loved the times that we got a Complete Edition day one and finished the game straight away from start to the end. Thats why i hate liveserviceeee games so much and thats what i see in FF15. Im scared that FF7R will be the same and thats why Im going for Dragon Quest 11.
What is All the Bravest? Oh a phone game? Yeah that doesn't count. I really enjoyed 2 btw.
@LaNooch1978 I think so.
@Radbot42 it does indeed count, it is a FINAL FANTASY game, that fact it's on mobile doesn't matter
it carries the FINAL FANTASY name so it's part of the series
and FFII is a pretty fun game but it's level up system, and dungeons are the worst in the series
@GraveLordXD unless they fixed it, Adams I thought I read somewhere they did.... but at the time the game played a specific way before chapter 12. And then chapter 12, the game played much differently and for me, it was completely not fun. And then i read that it was one of the longer chapters. The game returns to normal I think after that chapter, but I didn't feel like slogging through to find out.
@LaNooch1978 yeah it adds enough to the game to warrant the cost i think but only if you already have the base game otherwise i would say buy the full Royal Edition as buying the 2 separately cost's more than the all in one edition now a days
@Cutmastavictory The last chapter is really worth slogging through the mess that's chapters 12 onwards tbh. Plus, you then get access to the post-game content which is decent and the game becomes road trip fun again.
Of course it is, because single player games are dead.
@nessisonett I don't doubt that, but I play video games for fun, and when that stops so do I. And especially if I have other games to play. Maybe somebody else can slog through it for me lol
Awful story telling, if you could even call it that, they really ought to hire some decent writers. Here's hoping the next game is considerably better in the plot and character department.
It’s a good game, not a masterpiece though, the story is a mess.
Haven't played it in quite a while but I loved many parts of it. I don't like the fact that it can be very slow but the combat was kick ass.
Thinking about buying the Royal Edition on PC to play it in 4k.
I hated what I played of it. With the exception of FFXII, the series has been going steadily downhill since the lackluster FFX.
@Radbot42 um is it better than FF1? FF1 walk 2 secs... Random encounter... Walk 2 secs... Random encounter. Rinse and repeat..
@Ralizah it’s so crazy (and a good thing!) that people have such different tastes. I personally feel that X is in my top 3. XV is better than some of them but nowhere near the top 3.
I have mixed feelings on XV the story was terrible with no details on back stories of characters unless you watched other things. The game seemed a slog to begin with then it clicked and really enjoyed it, but come the end it was wearing a bit thin and once I finished the story I was done. One of the trophies made the game less enjoyable the one where you had to walk so many steps as decided to walk everywhere instead of using chocobo's which were a lot of fun and would of made it more enjoyable.
I never liked the combat from the demos I played so I never bought it. I thought it was all flash but no substance. The fiddly camera was awful, too. Give me turn based, gambits or the combat from Dragon's Dogma any day.
@ztpayne7 It's definitely an unpopular opinion on my part, as a lot of people really cherish FFX. I have... a lot of issues with it (that I won't get into unless people really want me to, as nobody likes to see one of their cherished games get dunked on, you know?).
I actually have a lot of unpopular opinions regarding PS2 games. I don't like the original Kingdom Hearts. I think MGS2 is a better game than MGS3. I also prefer Silent Hill 3 to Silent Hill 2.
@ApostateMage The biggest thing that killed it for me was the constant enemy ambushes. I soon learned to dread hearing the words "Imperials above us!"
Shame because it's trash.
@LaNooch1978 Royal Edition is worth it if you can buy it on sale.
$30 Royal Edition vs $25 Season Pass + $15 Royal Pack + Base Game Price.
@Ralizah Games are a really personal thing i stopped playing MGS 2 because some 🤬 told me the ending.... 😑
For me its FF7 THEN really close second FF8 after that FF8. But the Legend of Dragoon is my all time favorite and Koudelka is awsome too and Parasite Eve 2 it was fantastic. 😁 😃
Well deserved! I'm playing for a few weeks now and loving it. The gameplay is really addictive. =)
Nice. I hope the next game will build on the strong aspects of XV. It was a great experience overall. Even though the troubled development obviously hurt its potential.
Victims of their own success. I expect the next one will be an equally troublesome hodgepodge when my descendants finally get to play it.
only final fantasy noobs enjoyed xv. pretty well everyone else was either gravely disappointed by it, embarrassed that it exists, or couldn't even bring themselves to complete it. what a mess of a game. i have completed and enjoyed every ff game since vi but will never give xv a second try. it doesn't deserve my time and attention nor could i ever be driven enough to play through the game that broke the camels back (i.e. completely ruined the franchise).
@Porco Ain't this article about how fast FFXV sold? I mean, if you're right, then new players matter more now (i.e. buy and enjoy it more) than old fans.
My perspective is that new players indeed enjoyed it a lot, but it was at least divisive for old fans (not everyone hates it, in fact I mostly read positive opinions). The position of almost ruined the franchise belongs to FFXIII given the divisive overall opinion (from both old and new players).
@RenanKJ hmm i disagree. despite the faults of xiii, it at least had a great battle system — one of my favourites in the series in fact. the game also took the time to develop the story and characters — even it fell flat at times and was not the most popular in the series. the game felt complete, despite its faults, which is not something i can say about xv. also, the main caveat of xiii is how linear and uninspired some of the environments were, but if one can look past that, it is a far superior game to xv in almost every regard. xv is objectively an incomplete game with an identity crisis and lacks even the most decent effort with its storytelling and characters. no matter how you might look at it yourself, it is easily one of the weakest entries in a once highly regarded franchise.
FFVII Remake will blow this out of the water. I’m sure all my great-grandchildren will buy it day 1.
It’s well deserved. FFXV is in my top 10 favorite games of all time and is my favorite FF game so far. But I haven’t played many FF games. I’ve only played XII, XIV, and XV.
Edit:
Forgot to mention how much I enjoy the combat system. It felt new to me and I really enjoyed it. I really like when games experiment with new gameplay styles that work and are fun.
@LaNooch1978 there is another set of DLC planed for next year but the game as it is now has plenty of content so the Royal Edition is well worth it but there is a chance they will release a complete edition next year too
i would say if you are willing to wait then wait but with the price you can get the base edition and Royal DLC now it probably will work out cheaper getting it now and buy the DLC
@LaNooch1978 yeah me too hence the new Avatar
Such a bad game. Zero story! Boring characters! Boring and shallow gameplay! Large empty open world! Unfortunately its been a financial success for SE so imagine this will be the series new direction from now on. Pity
The JRPG I enjoyed the most this generation. They clearly took some risks and had hefty ambitions so I am glad it payed off.
I hope the next game builds on the foundations of everything that is good in XV
Anyway the game is a smash hit so have a nice day, haters
@Ralizah sorry just saw this. I’m with you on MGS, though. MGS 3 is the only main game in the series 😂 lets just say I can see why you’d like XII and also why you wouldn’t like X depending on preferences. I mean, some people think VIII is their favorite and I think they’re crazy! I also recently played IX for the first time last year and while it was so good to play a classic FF title, I had a lot of issues with it.
@ztpayne7 IX is actually the one classic FF game I've still never touched. Really need to get around to that!
I think my top games in the series are fairly uncontroversial: VII, VI, IV, XII, and III, in that order.
@Ralizah I haven’t really played I-III. My list is sort of similar: VI, X, VII, XV, IV. IX would probably be next on the list. I felt there were some weird plot things (even more so than XV), but it was still charming as a ps1 era FF game. The limit break system is absolute garbage though. (Come at me, IX fans 😂)
@ztpayne7 I is dated enough that it takes some effort to enjoy. II is a complete mess. It wasn't until III that they found a winning formula for the gameplay. Although, if I'm being honest, I'd always choose the DS remake or the NES original. It just looks, sounds, and feels better to play.
