FIFA 19 Karius PS4 PlayStation 4 1

FIFA 19 will spice up the ol’ series mainstay Exhibition with a few nifty new options this year. In addition to being able to play FA Cup and Champions League matches, complete with all of the custom presentation and commentary you’d expect of such occasions, you’ll also be able set up mini-series events (‘Best Of’ matches, essentially) and two-legged ties.

But the really neat addition, as reported by Eurogamer.net, is Survival mode. Now, this isn’t Battle Royale specifically, but it will see you lose a player each time you score. As per the real rules of football, matches are abandoned once a team has fewer than seven players on the field, so you need to score five to win. Of course with each goal you score, the harder it becomes to get more.

One neat touch is that EA Sports has added little animations and commentary flourishes to the mode, so you’ll see a bewildered Jordan Henderson strut off the pitch when Mo Salah inevitably nets.

Also of interest is that you’re now going to be able to completely customise Exhibition matches using a bunch of new parameters. While there will be default options available, you’ll be able to turn off referees, for example, or enable an old playground favourite in Headers and Volleys – where only said types of goals will count.

It’s not a game changer by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s nice to see the company invest a little extra effort into arguably one of the most important areas of the franchise. Yes, it may be Ultimate Team that draws the headlines every year, but we daresay the average player gets most mileage out of simple kickabouts with friends. These new options will improve those impromptu sessions.
