Taiko no Tatsujin is a series you may not have heard about before, but it's a popular series of rhythm action games in Japan where you typically play to the beat of the music with a literal drum controller. A version has been available on PS4 since last year, but it's finally heading West on 2nd November 2018.
Unfortunately, neither the North American or European PlayStation Blogs make mention of the drum controller. In fact, the European blog specifies a digital release, meaning there may not be a physical version of the game at all. Whatever the case, Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session is set to feature songs from Disney movies, Tekken, Ridge Racer, and plenty more.
This is the first time in the history of the series that it's coming to Western shores. We hope that the controller launches alongside it, as it would be a shame to have to play on a standard DualShock 4. Do you like the look of Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session? Given the Switch version was datamined to find english logos etc. This is hardly shocking.
Cool though.
Edit: Curious how this will work using just a DS4. The Switch release at least lets you emulate drumsticks. This seems like it would just be a button masher without the accessory?
@Knuckles-Fajita There's a basic version of this franchise in Yakuza that you play with the DualShock and, yeah, it's just like a Hatsune Miku game or whatever.
@get2sammyb Ahhh. Hm. Wonder if they could do a PSVR version or include move support, as currently without the additional controller, the Switch release looks more fun to play just out of the box. How odd.
"This is the first time in the history of the series that it's coming to Western shores" - this isn't entirely accurate, as there was a PS2 release in the US.
Wish the vita version was coming too, but i will probably get this. My wife loved the mini version in yakuza 5 and we enjoyed it when visiting the arcades in japan so this could be a fun party game for us
I imported this one bundled with the drum. Fun stuff and lots of songs. 100% English interface.
@Knuckles-Fajita
You just use buttons like any other rhythm game. There are three settings that use face buttons or shoulder buttons or a combination but since there are only two inputs it is not confusing yet challenging when patterns mix inputs up.
just a correction to the article: this is not the first time the series has hit western shores. the ps2 iteration titled "taiko drum master" was released back in 2004 and included the drum kit. if there was a way to use an adapter on ps4 with the old drum kit i would be all over this.
The closest thing that I ever been to this franchise was when Capcom release an event quest on MH4U for a Hunting Horn that looks like the Drum of this series.
If they release this game in the west it needs to come bundled with the drum otherwise it's just another rhythm game and will lose its charm
@Wraggadam IKR? Who proofreads this? Sigh...
I was never interested in rhythm games until I tried it in Yakuza. I suppose you have to try it to see if you like it.
@EVIL-C similar to most websites today, it appears the proofreading is left up to the readers. I do enjoy the content the website puts out, but the grammatical errors, lack of fact checking and choices of phrasing are just a few of the things that really bug me, and come across as unprofessional at times.
